2005 kia Spectra has automatic transmission problem. Several kia mechanics at various kia dealerships (banner, pat peck, and kia of slidell) say performance is normal, but it slips out of gear on the highway, almost putting our family in several accidents, because it scares us so much. Our family loves the Spectra, and takes very good care of it, but this unsafe condition has made anyone we know fearful to ride in it, when they feel it bucking in and out of gear, on the highway. Please convince kia to stand behind this car, and repair it to the condition we were promised - thank you. The car has always done this, from what we remember, and various times kia service people have said that this is just the way the Spectra is - the last visit, they convinced us to flush all of the fluids, to take care of any issues, once and for all, and now it is worse than ever. We are complaining to you now because it has become almost unusable for other than going around the subdivision. Some chat boards say the 2005 has a faulty tcm (control module), but kia has not acknowledged that to us, and said the reprogramming took care of it (this did not).

Consumer has filed a safety complaint #6259431 with federal trade commission. Concerning automatic transmission failure on same issue as stated in odi #10125427. Also, consumer spoke with the manufacturer Kia Motors. Manufacturer said someone would be in contact with consumer within 3 days. It has been 2 weeks and consumer has not heard anything. Consumer said that transmission shifted into a lower gear for no reason. Last time vehicle was at dealer it would not go very fast, and the engine was very sluggish. Consumer said that it was like trying to pull out in a higher gear than 1st or 2nd. Gear. When driving on the highway at 70 mph the car would down shift to a low gear and it would drop to 35 mph. Dealer indicated that something was making the vehicle drop into safe mode, which caused vehicle to stay in second gear. Dealer replaced transmission control module (tcm), replaced the throttle body, and has done something to the grounds. In February the dealer replaced the transmission . Currently they replaced the tcm, added a new computer , and adjusted linkage cables for transmission. However, consumer maintained that problem became worse.

Transmission module on original transmission failed causing transmission damage, local dealership replaced. Second transmission blew a front pump seal within approximately 1000 miles while on our vacation/honeymoon. Third transmission replaced while on vacation out of state. Current (third) transmission is still slipping. Have not sought out service for this failure yet as we do not trust the dealerships in our area. We have written kia certified mail over a month ago to be reimbursed for excess expenses incurred due to these mechanical failures and travel interuption monies under their warranty, but to date have not received a response.
Car was 4 weeks old when engine light came on for the first time - called dealer said it was due to gas tank cap. Made appt w/dealer - next day engine light off - following week 6/18/02 engine light came on again it went off before dealer appt. Engine light goes off and on randomly. Finally engine light remains on at all times. On July 10 take to dealer keep car over night replaced transmission control module. Next day July 11 having traveled 125 miles engine light comes on - at highway speeds gears did not shift properly at times unable to acclerate past 50 mph - engine revved locked in wrong gears for speed traveled - had to pull over to shoulder several times to try and get gears working right. With exception of a few hours engine light remained on . So far dealer finds nothing wrong as engine light want off mere minutes before my scheduled appointment. Also trunk release on hatchback only works 1/3 of the time the rest of the time it opens half way and you must use key.
