I was driving and the vehicle would not brake, and steered right while driving 40-50 mph, hitting the curb and almost collided with another vehicle. Definite defect in the steering/fuel/brakes/electronicstabilitycontrol, and other minor mechanical malfunctions.

My daughter just purchased 2002 kia Sportage with 105164 miles on it. It was purchased during the day and test drove during the day when weather was warmer approx 50 degrees or higher. It has turned cold the day after purchasing and now high temp is 24 degrees. Have noticed a strong gas smell coming from inside of car. She started it to warm it up this morning before leaving and noticed the strong gas smell when she started to leave. Does anyone know what might be causing this. Had mechanic check car before we bought and everything checked out fine. Now she is almost afraid to drive due to gas smell.

Drivine on road approx speed 35 miles per hour and experienced burning smell. The temperature gauge immediately went from the middle of the gauge to hot. I pulled out of the road as soon as this happened and the steering wheel locked up. I exited the vehicle immediately as there were large billows of smoke coming from the engine . There was fire under the right front side of the vehicle. I called 911 who sent the local fire department. The car was completely in flames within 2 minutes and it took the fire department approximately 10 minutes to arrive and put out the flames. The flames were present to the back seat and the only portion of the vehicle intact was the rear of the vehicle.

My 2002 kia Sportage especially in cold weather leaks gas vapors thru the vents, enough to give my wife migraines and nausea, it might even be a hazards if you smoke in the car. They should definitely do a recall to fix this problem before someone shows up with a cancer or a car explodes. We are about to buy another car cause we are concern about our newborn and fuel vapors not a good mix.

Like other complaints that I am seeing, we have a 2002 kia Sportage with 69000 miles and are having severe problems with raw fuel vapors in the passenger compartment upon start up and sitting still. I am a mechanic and have searched for an active fuel leak, but can not find one. . The vapors are extremely strong and I am sure present a fire or explosion hazard (especially if someone is smoking). . Brakes not working properly. ,when you step on brake you can feel the brake or tire spending and your car is still rolling when your are stepping on the brake. Engine, turning the car engine on and off. When you start the engine the engines clicks but does not start. Its not the transmission. I have replaced the battery several times but still the same problem.

I did research an seen a recall sc059 my care is doing the same thing called kia customer service she gave me a case number gave me the phone number to the kia dealer she said couldn't drive car have it towed, have jake sweeny to diagnose if this is doing the same problems the old recall did for them to call her and she would ask her dist mgr to let this car be fix. My brother is handicapped and he called the dealer and he ask for the VIN number and said there was no recall. We know there is not one at this moment but for him to look at this car because of it causing a life threatening problem. I have case number from kia just need to get the dealer to look at the car the fumes are making him sick and now the chance of the care blowing up. Please help ASAP. Like other complaints that I am seeing, I have a 2002 kia Sportage with 68000 miles and it is having severe problems with fuel vapors in the passenger compartment. I have taken the vehicle to the mechanic and they are unable to find a source for the fuel smell. The vapors are extremely strong and I get very nauseous; I have to open a back window so I do not get a migraine headache. I live in wisconsin so it is very cold in the winter time to do this with the open windows but I cannot drive the car any other way. I would appreciate if the NHTSA would look further into investigating this problem and make kia issue a safety recall and repair. . . I am the original owner of the vehicle and besides the 4 wheel drive breaking once, and this horrible gas smell I have not had many problems with this car.

My 2000 kia Sportage has been leaking gas. We haven't had it repaired, as we cant afford it. Someone suggested looking for recalls, that's when I found this site. The "heat shield" (?) has always rattled badly. In addition to the rattling and bad gas leak, the motor blower fan is not working, my 4wheel drive isn't working. Underneath it is a rust bucket! the back doors wont lock/unlock. Something really needs to be done!!! please, someone stand up for the little guy and make kia fix these problems!!!.

I noticed a smell gas near the passenger door at the rear of the car. I look underneath and there was a leak of gas underneath. My mechanic has replaced something under it 2 x and it is leaking again.

This car is absolutely unsafe to drive; at any moment it may stall due to the faulty electrical system. I have had this car in for service numerous times and I have never gotten the problem resolved. I have simply had enough and would like some help.
