My daughter owns a 2002 kia Sportage that recently broke down due to a fuel leak on top of the gastank. Car was towed to the nearest repair facility. Turns out a plastic nozzle had cracked off the high pressure fuel supply line coming out of the gastank itself resulting in pumping fuel everywhere! luckily, vehicle didn't catch on fire! part was finally replaced 4th time back to repair facility, but was replaced with the same plastic nozzle instead of a metal nozzle?this is my safety concern with this vehicle, afraid the samething will eventually happen again. Had the vehicle caught on fire, my 17yr old daughter would probably not had enough time to exit the vehicle, due to the amount of fuel underneath it? not sure if this is a common problem with this vehicle, but I feel this situation should be addressed as a safety concern.

My 2000 kia Sportage has been leaking gas. Repairs, as I can't afford. The repair shop said the gas tank is coming a loose at the seam. Fumes is very strong in the car. I can't fill the tank up with gas because of the problem. I called the dealer and because there is no recall I have to repair it myself. I only have 70,000 miles on the vehicle and this should not be happening. The fumes are so strong I can't ride my grandchildren in the back seat of the vehicle. Fumes from the gas tank is dangerous if you light a match or use a lighter etc. . . Please help do something about this problem before someone is injured. Must there be injuries before something is done. Please help.

Replaced leaking fuel tank, fuel pump and sensor on 2000 kia Sportage with 55,106 miles on the vehicle. We are second owners.
Gas leak from the top of my gas tank where the sending unit is attached. Both the tank and sending unit (with fuel pump) needed replaced. 2000 kia Sportage.
My 2001 kia Sportage had a strong gas odor for a couple of weeks. I was told by the dealer to get a new gas cap. The odor became stronger and I took the car in for repair at an independent service station. I was told I needed a new gas tank. The tank was corroded and leaking. I had the gas tank installed in October, 2007. The car had 61,000 miles.

Vehicle gas tank was leaking fuel, probably for quite some time before it became visually apparent. I could see gasoline dripping on the pavement in my parking spot at work. The kia dealer told me the gas tank had rusted through on the bottom, and would have to be replaced. The bottom of the gas tank holder has holes in it for ventilation. These holes allow road debris to lodge between the holder and the tank, eventually causing the corrosion. Dealer also told me the fuel pump and sensor would have to be replaced, before they even dropped the tank. Dealer told me the although there had been some complaints about this issue, there was no recall and I would be responsible for all charges.
The vehicle only got 80 miles to a half tank of gas, and the brakes collected an excessive amount of brake dust.
- the contact has a 2000 kia Sportage and complaind about tjhe fuel pump and gas tank which were replaced on 1/10/07 because the gas tank was rusted and the fuel pump was leaking gas. The contact purchased the parts from the dealer and they were installed by the contact's husband. The failure milages was143500 and the current mileage is 144000.
