Tank Assembly Problems of Kia Motor Sportage - part 1

The car keeps stalling just quits when I slow down. I had two mechanics check it out. Filled the tank with new gas, and nothing showed up on the electrical check. It is a mystery why this keeps happening. I am worried that this might happen on a major highway. And I don't want to sell the car and give someone else this problem.

The contact owns a 2001 kia Sportage. The contact stated the fuel tank was corroded causing a leak in the fuel tank. The contact found a large puddle of gasoline fuel under the vehicle and the vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that the fuel sending unit would need replacing at the contact's expense. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no other assistance. The failure mileage was 110,000.

The contact owns a 2003 kia sorrento ex (na). While the contact dispensed fuel into the fuel tank, fuel would spray out onto the ground and clothing. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and repair. The failure continued to occur after the repair. The dealer was notified and recommended the vehicle be diagnosed to determine the cause of failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

I purchased a 2011 kia Sportage Mar 2011 w/ 12 miles on it. The mpg range on the window sticker was 22 city/27 highway (18 min/32 max). Shortly after the gas mileage was poor. I drove the vehicle for 500 miles figuring that should break it in and hoped the gas mileage would improve. It didn't, but got worse. I returned to the dealer in may, the vehicle had 504 miles on it and was getting 12 miles per gallon. Dealer ran a fuel consumption test and ecm upgrade stating that should fix the problem. I drove it another 700 miles but the mileage didn't' get better. The service mgr stated that a bcm upgrade was performed and that it was getting 29. 3 mpg on the highway and 24. 5 mpg in the city. I have never mpg in the 20 range. It has been in the teen range on the computer & in actual calculations. The service dept mgr told pay no attention to the computer on the car, yet it has been accurate w/ the actual mileage. We drove the vehicle out of state, the mpg was not consistent. Upon our return from our highway trip the mpg dropped significantly to range from 13. 3 to 15. 70 driving in city. We returned the car a 3rd time in Aug 2011, the dealer did a fuel consumption test again. They had my car for 11 days. The only thing they did was replaced the computer on the 2nd to the last day not knowing what else to do. Continuing to drive the car, the highest mpg I got was 16. 89 mpg. When I fill up the gas tank, the computer on the car shows that I should be getting 308 or 309 miles on the tank of gas, by the end of the tank, I only get ~ 200 mpg. No explanations are given for this. I lose 100 + miles per tank. I filed a lemon law case and lost because this wasn't a safety issue. Kia USA has refused to deal with the issue at hand. Since there are no "codes" being issued by the car, kia says there is nothing they will do. As of today June 2012, the mpg is still 15. 87 mpg.

1995 to 2002 kia Sportages frames are rotting out and gas tanks leaking also. Kia refuses to repair or put out a recall on this issue. Vehicles are a safety issue to the public. Ford windstars had similar problems from 1998 to 2003 back axle rotting out, they are taking action and owning up to the problem. I have been a state inspection mechanic for the state of PA. For 35yrs this defect is going to cause several crashes, maybe deaths. Kia is not concerned about this matter any help would be great. Thanks.

The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who diagnosed that the fuel tank module was corroded and needed to be replaced. Faulty gas tank. The gas tank leaks gas.

Our 2001 kia Sportage had a gas smell. Now we noticed gas leaking out of the tank. It seems to stop at 1/4 full. We bought in brand new in 2002.

I recently filed a complaint on a 2002 kia Sportage, for a fuel leak condition from gastank area,(plastic fitting), my daughter has recently advised me she has been having trouble filling the gastank and smelling an odor of fuel on occasions and bad fuel mileage. Apparently, when pumping fuel, the fuel will blow back out on her, if not pumped slowly! seems to be another issue with this certain vehicle?????? vehicle also has an intermittent chk engine light coming on?? code # po13a?? another safety concern! ????????.

I own a 1999 kia Sportage and recently had it racked to see what the noise was that was coming from underneath my car. The entire undercarriage has rusted out and the fame is separating from each other, leaning on the shock absorbers on both sides, there are large holes in the fame where they have rusted through, the fuel tank and shield is rusted out and this car is a ticking time bomb, ready to fall apart, and or if anything hits the fuel tank it will disintegrate and possibly explode. This car is literally coming apart underneath. Two of the doors panels underneath have rusted away. Everything is rusted and it scares me to death to be driving it now that I have seen the undercarriage. I have many photos to submit for proof of the problem. Apparently this car has been rusting for some time and I have never noticed it. I bought it brand new in September of 1999. It has prematurely rusted out unlike most vehicles which last for many years. I was informed by my brother this past summer and he told me that there was a service campaign on the fuel tank but when I took it to the dealer, they said it was past the 10 year mark by a few months and they wouldn't do anything about it. I have been in contact with kia to gather information about recalls and service campaign notices of which I only was notified about 3 or 4 of them shortly after I purchased it.

Fuel odor ,found gas leaks from corroded gas tank, called kia headquarters,told to take it to a dealer , car was out of warranties but kia paid to replace the gas tank, I was told it was common with this kia Sportage 2001 , the tank shield under the tank collected the salt from the road while driving in the winter and sit there between the shield and the tank causing excessive corrosion,I was pleased with kia action to pay fully for the tank.

2000 kia Sportage. Consumer states several problems with vehicle the consumer stated he had problems with the 4-wheel drive not operating properly. When the 4-wheel drive would engage, it would cause tremendous friction which caused the vehicle to slow down drastically. Also, when it was engaged in a turning mode, the front gear would slip. The gas tank shield was three quarters of the way rotted due to rust and there seemed to be minor gas seepage under what was left of the tank shield. The chassis frame rails, both rear sides were approximately 85% rotted out by rust. The consumer was informed by several repair shops that the rails could not be repaired due to the fact that there was very little good metal to repair and strengthen the vehicle frame.

The chassis of my 1999 kia Sportage is rotting out. I have had to have the railings welded together, one railing has a hole about 6 in long on the side of the railing and the gas tank has to be replace. But if the tank is removed the part of the chassis it is attached to will come off and there will be no way to attach a new one.

The contact owns a 2001 kia Sportage. The contact smelled a strong odor of fuel coming from the air vents and circulating throughout the inside of the vehicle. Also, an excessive amount of fuel was leaking coming from the fuel tank. The vehicle has not been repaired for the malfunction at this time. The failure mileage was 120,000. The current mileage was 155,000.

I purchased my 2002 kia Sportage in 2003 & it was almost 2 years before I started having a problem putting gas in my gas tank, I have to pump the gas very slow & even then the gas spurts back out & gets on my car, cloths, etc. , it takes a very long time to fill my gas tank, it seems that this problem occurs more often in the winter, but it has happened in the summer as well, I have just now in the last week been having a problem with smelling a strong gas smell in my kia just after I start going, I am going to go to the kia dealership to see if they have any intentions of fixing this problem since it appears there are alot of 2002 kia owners with the same problem, it doesn't take much to figure out that this is a manufacturer's defect.

2000 kia Sportage 4 wheel drive- bought car, contacted kia regarding recalls told there was one on fuel tank. Took car to kia, was told too many miles on car- but leaky fuel tank still exists. Today went to get fill up car, first time, the fire department had to come to service station because car was pouring out fuel from tank. Fireman told me to contact kia, told him already did but kia refused to do anything about this. Car needed towed, shut down service station for about an hour or more until fuel could be cleaned up. This is kia's fault, knew of defect, refused to do anything about it, look at internet how many complaints there are for these cars. Tank made from poor material with kia's knowledge so they should have a recall which there is one, but they don't want to honor it.

After filling gas tank 1 week before, started noticing strong odor of gasoline inside the vehicle as well as outside of it. Had friend look at it, there was no discernible leaks, just extremely strong gas smell. Smell is so strong it makes people nauseous, light headed, has given me migraine headache. Cannot ride in car without windows down. This is predominately noticed with the cold weather sets in, below 40 degrees. This is definitely a safety/health hazard. Found many complaints online of same problem. This needs to be recalled and fixed by kia as it is most definitely a manufacturing problem. Cannot seem to find what is causing this, it is probably the same problem that the 2005 Sportage recall states. I am terrified that it is going to cause a fire and I am going to get seriously hurt. Please do something. I am disabled on a fixed income and cannot afford to keep just changing thing until we finally, if ever, locate the problem. This is a extremely serious and potentially dangerous problem. It must be addressed before someone is injured or killed. I did notice that it appeared to have been half-heartedly looked into previously, please take this seriously. There are many of these on the road and it needs to be recalled.

About the beginning of November I begin smelling a slight gas odor when I get out the car. About the 9th of November the smell was extremely loud, I transport my grandchild and I'm afraid -- I had the car checked out and was told that the tank was rusted out and the gas was leaking out. The mechanic informed me that I need to replace the tank and the assembly - and this is not an inexpensive job. Where is the recall - I see this is a real problem with kia Sportages.

We also experienced the gas problem. First we had a problem with the tank leaking (was told by kia that 2002 Sportage model was not part of the recall/check, which it was and they should have paid for the $500 problem). Second, the gas shoots out when you try to fill, and check engine light comes on, this (we were told) is a bad oxygen sensor, another $350 and still not covered.

I have been having a problem with the fuel marker. When I pump gas it will gush out even with just $2. 00 in the tank I would have to pump it very slow in order to fill my tank up. I have a 2002 kia Sportage and from what I hear this is going on with other kia's. I would like to know if this is a manufacture error or is it time. It is very scary when the gas comes out and gets all over my clothes I think it's hazardous.

On two occasions, my 2001 kia Sportage has suffered a ruptured gasoline tank from rocks being trap between the gasoline tank and the gasoline tank guard plate, making my vehicle a rolling bomb until I discovered the gasoline leak. The gasoline guard plate was designed with 8, circular holes in the guard approximately 1 inch in diameter which allows smalls rocks from the road to enter the space between the guard plate and the gasoline tank and grinding a hole in the gasoline tank, allowing the fuel to leak which creates an almost certain recipe for a disaster if the gasoline was to contact a hot tailpipe, or if the vehicle was in a accident. In both cases I had to replace a very expensive gasoline tank. I will be injecting foam into the space between gasoline tank and the guard plate later this week to hopefully, keep this explosive problem from occurring again. This a dangerous design flaw in my opinion and needs to be addressed. When I contacted kia of America yesterday and explained this situation, the customer service representative was in my opinion, less than receptive about kia looking into this situation. When someone gets cremated because of this design flaw, it will be too late. Please look into this situation. Thank you.

1999 kia Sportage, had a gas leak got it repaired with a new tank last year, still have a gas smell. I have taken it back several times for the smell they cannot find the problem, of course this is my regular mechanic not a kia dealer. Now the frame is busted from premature rusting and disintegration which is holding up the gas tank. Check engine light is constantly on for "evap leak" . No power when a/c is running. A/c now has leak. Constantly smell a burning smell just before the check engine light comes on. Also constantly blows fuses for power windows etc. This is a death trap for sure, you can imagine my surprise when I was advised not to drive my grandbabies in this car it is unsafe. . . And when they refused to fix it as they couldn't take responsibility for the safety of the vehicle when trying to fix a framing problem. This car has had very good maintenance, oil changes, tires etc. And only has 114,000 miles , I never dreamed I would have to find another car so soon. I really thought I should have at least another 100,000 to go!.
