My sister-in-law has a 2002 kia Sportage that has begun leaking fuel out of a cracked fuel tank. Apparently this is so common that a kia recall (recall sc059) was issued. However, a dealership in scottsdale arizona told us that her VIN was not a part of the recall. Yet, the very reason for bringing it in was for the exact focus of the recall. The recall specifications do not exclude/include specific vins. How can we get kia to honor their recall?.

On December 22, 2008, during vehicle inspection, found gas smell and possible leak in gas tank. Phone kia dealership, and they indicated that there was a service campaign, and to bring the vehicle in for a fuel tank inspection (along with some other recall repairs). On 1/2/2009, the vehicle was inspected by the kia dealership, and they indicated that the fuel tank was leaking from the bottom of the tank, and that this was a known issue and may be covered by a service campaign. However, the mileage on the vehicle was 137,700 miles, and the limit was 130,000 for kia to reimburse. I indicated that I had never received an notice of this problem. Further investigation showed that there were at least two (2) service campaigns (sc059 and rb001) which dated back to may 2006, and January 2008. Had I been notified, the vehicle would have had much less than the limit of 130,000 miles. I phoned and e-mailed customer support (no mailing address listed). During the phone conversation with steve, I was informed "too bad, but it is out of the mileage limit and there is nothing we can do. Not sure why you never got a notice". When I e-mailed, I received a phone reply (after the second e-mail) from steve stating "we already discussed this. Not sure why you e-mailed since this was already addressed". I feel that a problem as important as a leaking fuel tank should not be left to chance, waiting for a regular inspection or an actual leak to detect it. I feel that kia should be responsible for a recall, and should also be responsible for the cost of the repair. Currently I have repaired the tank, while looking for a replacement tank. Thank you for your time.

I purchased my kia used, from a dealer, less than a year ago, and it passed the electronic systems check for vehicle inspection. I immediately had to have dealer replace the gasoline tank after smelling gasoline. This car is used solely for light usage to transport myself and my children to and from dr's and grocery stores. After owning the car for less than two months, check engine light came on, reporting issue with catalyst. Found a recall on this issue and am trying to get original dealer to fix. Now experiencing loss of power to engage inclines or hills, causing a hazard to other drivers. Also back brakes simply "blew"! without any forewarning, with my children in the car, I lost all braking abilities. Thank goodness I was not going fast and have a standard to quickly downshift. My mother was killed due to loss of brakes, and it was an absolute panicking situation for me emotionally. Being a single mother I rely on mechanics to do all my work, and I had just had all my fuel levels topped off and my pads checked, without any issue found. I have also had an intermittent issue with the front seat belts remaining engaged. The dealer warranty expired and I am stuck with recalls nobody seems to want to fix!.
The contact owns a 2001 kia Sportage. The contact smelled gasoline in the vehicle and took it to the mechanic. It was discovered that the tank was leaking due to a loose seam. As a result, the contact cannot fill up the gas tank in the vehicle. She discovered on the internet that there were other complaints for this year, make, and model vehicle. The contact feels that this is unsafe because the vehicle could catch fire. The failure mileage was 70,000. Updated 05/13/lj updated 05/13/09.

Gas tank leaks. Leaks fast when there is 7 to 8 gallons of gas in the tank. Strong odor, always . Never stops leaking. Replace the washer. Did not work. Used epoxy did not work. Welding did not after a few days. Buffed the rust off, but it still leaks. Holes every where.
The contact owns a 2002 kia Sportage. The contact smelled a strong odor of gasoline emanating from her vehicle. She took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that gasoline was leaking from the fuel tank. Secondly, a technician stated that there was no recall available for that component; therefore, the contact would have to assume financial responsibility for the repair. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure mileage was 72,000 updated 03-30-09 updated 03/31/09.
The fuel tank began leaking due to failure of the fuel tank assembly. Kia provides a service campaign (sc059) to inspect 1996-2002 Sportage models to verify this failure is covered by that campaign. However, kia only provides repair bulletin assistance for 1996-2000 models with this problem - so even though they verified it is a safety issue they refuse to repair it under the repair bulletin because it is a 2001 model. Why is the service campaign for inspection encompassing 1996-2002 models if they are only repairing 1996-2000 models without charging?.
The contact owns a 2002 kia Sportage. Immediately after purchasing the vehicle in March of 2008, the contact noticed a faint smell of gasoline inside the vehicle. He only noticed the smell when the gas tank was full. The failure lasted over the past several months and the smell grew stronger. The dealer has not been notified. The manufacturer stated that there were no recalls relating to his vehicle; therefore, they were not liable for the repairs. The current mileage was 43,000 and failure mileage was 33,000.
The contact owns a 2001 kia Sportage. The contact smelled a strong odor of gasoline and the fuel gauge went from a full tank to half a tank. She found a puddle of gasoline underneath the vehicle. The dealer stated that the fuel tank was corroded. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance because the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The VIN, number of cylinders, engine size, and dealer information were unknown. The current and failure mileages were 68,000.
Purchased this car used in February 2008. When filling with gas, the gas has to be pumped extremely slow or it spurts out. The car has an odor of gas also. This problem is worse in the winter, although it has happened occasionally in warmer weather, but the minute the temperature goes below 40 f, I can count on this happening every time I put gas in the car. I've ruined clothes, shoes, and have ended up with gas all over my hands and legs (and I've come close to getting it in my face!!). The gas pump will shut off as if the tank is full and the gas just spurts right out of the tank. If I pump the gas extremely slow, (tonight it took me almost 10 minutes to pump about 6 gallons of gas), I can usually manage to get most of the gas in the tank, but again, I have to go extremely slow and the pump still keeps shutting off. It would keep stopping as stated above, but only a little gas will spurt out when it stops. If I try to pump at a normal speed, it only takes a few seconds and the gas starts spurting and I end up covered with gas by the time I'm done. I thought this was just a fluke, but one of my fellow employees also had a 2002 kia Sportage and had the same problem. Then just a few minutes ago on this site, I read someone else with the same problem. I think this is dangerous since you end up with gas all over your car, the ground, and yourself!.
Fuel tanks rust out quick. I noticed smell of gas, and replaced tank immediately. No damage was done, just concern for others. Poor design captures moisture between fuel tank and skid plate. This has cost me 250. 00 for the tank, a half day of labor, and I'm concerned with putting skid plate back on. I looked on the internet to see if there were similar problems. There were several exact and others found with the fuel tanks. No cars have caught fire yet.
Gas leak. Needed to replace sending unit, gas tank, etc. Cost over $900. Could have resulted in fire, injury, etc.
On 11/14/07 I checked my Sportage into the dealer to have the tires replaced. I was informed that the car was unsafe to drive, because of a leak in the fuel tank. I had not noticed the leak, but the dealer said there was a very strong probability of a fire because of all the gas. I replaced the gas tank. In January of 2008 I received notice that kia would cover the repairs NHTSA # 10024232. I sent in my receipts in February. On sept 10th kia have 9 months of waiting decided they did not need to cover the cost of the repairs because my paperwork did not note where exactly the tank was leaking from. However, they brought me out to the car before they repaired it and the rear shield of the tank was completely rusted and the tank was leaking in the rear. The tank was not secure on the vehicle. This should certainly be a full scale recall!.
The contact's daughter owns a 2000 kia Sportage. The contact had to replace the entire fuel tank on the vehicle. This also included the fuel tank, fending unit, and fuel pressure sensor. His daughter smelled a leak in the fuel system and was later informed that the entire tank needed to be replaced. The purchase date was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 87,140. Updated 3/4/08.
Gas tank leaks!.
Kia Sportage 2000 fuel tank leakage.
The contact owns a 2001 kia Sportage. While the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed a continuous leak coming from the fuel tank. He also smelled gas while driving at any speed. The dealer had not been notified. The current and failure mileages were 72,104.
The contact owns a 2000 kia Sportage. While driving 25 mph, the contact smelled gas coming from the vehicle; however, the odor intensified when the vehicle was parked. A private mechanic examined the vehicle and found that the fuel tank was corroded, causing gas to leak from two holes. The mechanic stated that the shield was placed on the vehicle before the fuel tank was dried, which caused water to sit on the tank and corrode. The dealer stated that the fuel tank needed to be replaced at the cost of $472. 13. The dealer and manufacturer confirmed that the VIN was not included in recall number sc059 and would not be able to provide assistance. The dealer information was unavailable. The current mileage was 127,000 and failure mileage was 126,000.

Action # ea06-007-fuel tank leakage in 2002 kia Sportage. I took the car to the dealership for service on 7/03/07 complaining of gas odor. I was charged to fix the roll over valve because it was said to be leaking externally. I took the car back to the dealership with the same odor complaint on 8/8/07. They claimed gas was found on the seam of the tank. They cleaned the tank seam where fuel was gathered and shampooed my carpet to remove any other odor free of charge. My car still had the gas odor. I witnessed gas leaking from my car on 9/10/07 and took it to another dealership. They found that the fuel tank was leaking and I was charged to have the fuel tank replaced.
I own a 1999 kia Sportage. It has developed a leak in the gas tank. It has corroded prematurely.
I own a 2000 kia Sportage, the gas tank was leaking from the bottom of the tank. I took it to the dealer, and they told me that the tank rusted out on the bottom, needed to be replaced, and the fuel pump and fuel sensor unit also need replacement. Dealer was aware of this problem, but said there was no recall so I was responsible for the cost of repairs.
Vehicle was towed to shop / no start fuel pump inoperative, rust found in fuel filter, fuel tank leaking externally ( rusted through ).
While driving my 2000 kia Sportage I started smelling gas I pulled over and looked under the vehicle and found gas leaking I had a mechanic look at it and he informed me gas was coming out of the top of my gas tank by where the fuel pump and gas gauge wiring goes in. I then went on the internet to see if there was any reported problems with this and found there was a recall from kia for the same reason. I the contacted a kia dealer in my area to get it fixed and he told me that the recall doesn't pertain to my vehicle and he but me in touch with kia consumer affairs and the next day (today) they told me that my Sportage is not covered by the recall and I'm going to have to pay out of pocket for the repair. Is there anything you people can do or I'm I or someone else going to have to die in this vehicle to make them honor their screw up. Thank you in advance for your help. If need be I'll go to the press with this problem.
The contact owns a 2000 kia Sportage. The contact noticed a huge puddle underneath the vehicle. He looked underneath the vehicle and saw the bottom of the fuel tank was wet with fuel and was dripping. There is a fuel leakage which he suspect is spilling a gallon of fuel per day. The protective coating on the bottom of the gas tank was compromised resulting in corrosion. The owner replaced the fuel tank himself. The current and failure mileages were 75,000.
I own a 2002 kia Sportage that has a strong odor of gasoline. I see that 2005 kia's had a recall on fuel leaks from the o-ring into the internal vapor chamber in the fuel tank, I believe the 2002 kia's also have this problem.
- the contact stated that there was gasoline leaking from the gas tank of the 2000 kia Sportage. The contact stated that the leaking happened whether she was driving or the vehicle was parked. The contact took vehicle into the dealership, and stated that they were repairing vehicles free of charge for the same failure, but this vehicle did not fall under the recall due to the VIN.
Fuel tank leaks gas.
The contact owns a 2000 kia Sportage. The contact claimed to smell and witness gas leaking from underneath the vehicle. The vehicle has not been taken to a mechanic for diagnosis. The current and failure mileage were 76,000. The consumer has taken the vehicle to the dealer and confirmed the problem listed above. The consumer has provided the invoice of repair. Update 04/30/tr.
Filling the kia with gas takes forever. It is like the venting system won't let the gas in, in a matter of seconds the gas spews out of tank. We have to keep clicking the handle off and on to fill the tank. This first started out just in the winter months, now it is all the time. We tried to see if something was blocking it, but couldn't get into it. With the things going on in our life right now, we haven't taken the time to have it checked out. Plus we don't have the extra money to spend on it. We just know that when we go to fill the kia it will take a long time. Was just wondering if this is happening to others?.
The gas tank on my 1998 kia Sportage is seriously corroding. My local garage mechanic stated that this is a serious condition as it could start leaking or break loose from the car. As I understand there is a NHTSA investigation (ea06007) currently being conducted. Please include me into the investigation so that this problem can be remedied.
