First owner 2017 kia Sportage sx (note sx specifically) awd 2. 0l turbo gas direct injection (4-cyl engine) (no recalls found) - excessive oil consumption since early/mid 2023 and continues still today, Feb 19, 2014. We lose over 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles, did not discover this until an oil change in early 2023 how low our oil was. No leaks then, no leaks now, oil maintenance performed, we have meticulous records and have been to the #1 cochran robinson township kia dealership where they have perform kias required oil consumption test that we've paid for. 1st set of test failed each time, dealership performed deep clean, and since there was only 3/4 quart loss, kia had no further responsibilities. Too busy with our small business over the holidays, started oil consumption test, again feburary 16 2024. Every single time we hit 1,000 miles (monthly) we are down over 1+ quarts of oil, with no leaks anywhere. Added 40 ounces of oil (I have photos) a few days before we decided to get the oil consumption test again. Pls note: there are quite a few models and engines listed in recalls or perhaps lawsuits for excessive oil consumption, our sx model 2. 0l turbo gas direct injection (4 cyl) specifically is not. Over the past 7 months, we have lost over 8 quarts of oil, and have had 2 maintenance oil changes in between, part of normal maintenance. Looking online there are thousands of posts regarding kia excessive oil consumption, kia states losing 1 quart every 1,000 miles is acceptable? how can this not cause a hazard to us drivers, engine could blow due to oil going somewhere or into the environment, etc? if you require all of the service records for the oil changes, etc. I have them all. Thank you sincerely dave.

The vehicle has always had a bit of a breaking issue especially in cruise control. In may had an incident where it slammed on the brakes so bad that everything in the backseat flew up to the front. Again the driver did not break. I went in for it to be repaired which took several weeks and spent 5 hours at the dealership. Two days later the car completely shut down and I had to have it towed to the dealership and they will not give me any answers. I do not think I will ever feel safe in the car again. Loved the car but if the safety issues do not work and I could possibly be in an accident and other people, that is a major safety issue.

Please answer these questions using my words what component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? I was unable to accelerate the gas pedal after the car started bouncing up and down and smelling mid driving. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I was on a major road at the time this occurred. Thankfully the time of day was in my side. If this was a few hours later there would have been a collision as I was in a main lane and had to veer to a turning lane. I am frightened every time I’m in the car now. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? the dealer ship has confirmed. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? no just the dealership. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no, the warning came on after it happened.
The contact owns a 2014 kia Sportage. The contact stated while having the anti-theft recall performed, the mechanic stated that the software that was being uploaded caused damages to the vehicle computer but was not sure what the failure was. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but did not provide any assistance. The failure mileage was 84,000.

As I was driving my 2023 kia Sportage sx prestige at 70+mph on highwy, suddenly "hybrid system failure" appeared on the dash along with evey other lights you can think of. I lost power and steering and only by the grace of god was able to safely get to the side of the road and stop. Car was at kia dealership for 4 weeks and I was told it only needed a software upgrade and nothing was wrong with the car!! this is very dangerous and could get someone in major car accident.
This is a heads up, not an incident report. On this vehicle there is a push button starter on the center console. Page 6-11 of the owner’s manual has a warning that reads, “never press the engine start/stop button while the vehicle is in motion. This would result in loss of directional control and braking function, which could cause an accident. ” I feel this is a hazard with an easy fix: disable the start button if the vehicle is in motion. A toddler could reach over and press the button for fun. A person could drop an object on it accidentally. I’m sure there are other scenarios where that button gets pushed inadvertently. Thank you.
Was traveling northbound on i5 between lacey and dupont, washington. Vehicle was in cruise at 65, then it suddenly went into limp mode. I was in the furthest right lane possible on the highway, and rpms drastically dropped to below 1,000. I was able to get the vehicle pulled over to the right shoulder safely while the vehicle dropped to approximately 10mph on the freeway. The vehicle died as soon it was placed in park. When attempting to turn the vehicle on, all engine light warnings displayed (this was not present when the vehicle went into limp mode) and would not start. I checked for oil levels, which showed they were only slightly low. No leaks in engine compartment and no leaks underneath the vehicle. Vehicle would attempt to start after the 5th consecutive attempt, and began knocking. Rpms would not exceed 1,500rpms with the gas pedal compressed. Towed to kia, kia rejecting warranty. Vehicle is a 2022 kia Sportage ex, only 60,000 miles on it. Still waiting on official denial letter, but this issue was prevalent in previous models of Sportage vehicles from kia. I'm thankful I was able to maneuver safely to the shoulder of a busy highway during dark hours, I could have been killed if a vehicle hit me from behind with how suddenly the vehicle's speed dropped, almost coming to a complete stop.

The car is currently in the shop at jim shorkey gainesville kia and is available for inspection. They have contacted me to tell me the transmission/engine failed. I was driving on interstate when I suddenly lost the ability to accelerate and was forced to get off of the highway. After coming to a complete stop I pressed on the gas pedal but the car would still not accelerate. I tried putting into park and back into drive and that did not work. I tried putting it into manual mode and it did go forward but every gear change was loud, jerky, and rough. I was able to make to my next complete stop in a left turning lane to cross a two lane busy highway that is coming downhill towards me at an intersection that does not have a traffic signal. However the car was stuck in gear 5. I was the first car in line. At this point I put other cars in danger as they swerved back into the high way to get around me into the intersection to make that left turn across busy highway. I turned the car completely off and after a minute turned it back on. I put in drive, waited until I couldn't see any cars coming down the hill and I pressed the gas pedal to test. It jerked forward and I managed to get across the highway as it shifted into the second gear it jerked violently and made a loud popping noise and there after every single gear change was loud and jerky. Thank god I did not lose the ability to accelerate in that left turn because those cars are coming at 70+ miles per hour down that hill or my family would have been t-boned on their passenger side. I am also lucky that I was able to get off the nearest exit when they problem originally happened as I was going downhill on the interstate and the next exit was very close so my momentum got me there. I lost the ability to control the vehicle as I ordinarily would putting myself, my family, and other motorists in danger had we not been able to get off on the exit or make it through that left turn.
My vehicle keeps stalling and its been having an oil consumption problem for several months. I keep taking it to kia, they keep doing oil consumption tests. I'm afraid to drive my vehicle anymore. I had an oil change done one month 3k miles later she was out of oil.

The contact owns a 2023 kia Sportage. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the automatic emergency brake (aeb) system engaged erroneously with an audible warning chime. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on two separate occasions; however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a review was conducted; however, the manufacturer had not provided any assistance. Recently, the contact stated that vehicle had started to wobble while driving 75 mph, without warning. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 15,500.
The contact owns a 2015 kia Sportage. The contact stated while driving 70 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle would not accelerate as designed. The contact depressed the brake pedal however, the vehicle failed to stop as needed. Additionally, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact continued driving until the vehicle independently slowed down and she was able to shift into park. The vehicle was towed to the dealer but was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was out of warranty. No further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 60,181.

The contact owns a 2018 kia Sportage. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled, was unable to accelerate past 20 mph, and then lost motive power. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed that unknown engine repairs were needed. The repairs were completed; however, the mechanic then diagnosed that the drive shaft needed to be replaced. The contact was informed that the warranty had expired. The vehicle remained at the dealer awaiting repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 46,300. The VIN was not available.
Driving at highway speeds the rpm would suddenly rev up very fast and the car would appear to be in neutral then soon go back to normal. On another occasion, taking a turn at 15 mph the car became as if in neutral, rpm would go very high, then shortly the rpm would drop and the car would be back in drive. The car was taken to the dealership, they checked it, noted that they could not duplicate the problem, and will not take any further action unless it repeats. The danger is if this occurs when driving into traffic, turning into traffic, driving on a freeway and the engine slips into the neutral mode, a collision can occur , risking injury, life and property. The only warning was the rpm going up very fast, and the car not reacting to pushing on the gas pedal. Attached is a pdf file that includes some summaries summaries of issues from web sites relating transmission problems of slipping into neutral.
The contact owns a 2017 kia Sportage. The contact stated while driving 60 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate as needed. The vehicle then went into limp mode with the check engine warning light blinking. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the vehicle could not be diagnosed because the vehicle was under recall. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 64,000.
I got a 2017 kia Sportage may 2022 and in September 2022 I started having problems with it I have taken it to the kia dealership 3-4 times once even by tow. I have been told by the workers at the dealership that the engine needs to be replaced (car has roughly 87,000 miles). I was driving it down the road and it made a noise and lost power I literally had to floor it just to go around 30-40mph. Now it shakes, it's missing, and it has smoke coming from the exhaust on top of the oil consumption problem that I found out about after purchasing ad was told kia knows about the problem. I haven't had it a year and can't drive it on the highway or nowhere else because of the possible engine fire hazard when I have a toddler in a car seat in the back seat that I may not be able to get out if fire was to happen. This is my only means of transportation nobody wants to take it as a trade-in because of the known problems with kia. And my car insurance has since doubled because of the liability of the vehicle and all the problems and safety concerns and I need answers because I wouldn't recommend any one to purchase a kia.
I was traveling at approx. 65 miles an hour in the #3 lane in traffic, when I lost power suddenly as if the engine died. I was able to immediately exit the freeway at the first exit and pulled into a gas station. (approx. 2 blocks from the freeway exit) I noticed a light on the dash was lit in the shape of an engine that wasn't lit before. At this time, I heard an unusual loud knocking noise coming from the engine compartment. I had just come from the store and had frozen food in the car. I didn't know what was causing the noise it didn't sound good and decided to just have aaa tow it to my house. Once the car was at home in my driveway and I had unloaded the frozen food, I plugged in my obdii reader which gave me a p1326 code. I checked to see what it meant and found out my year Sportage was prone to some kind of premature bearing wear. The car has been serviced by the book by kia of alhambra since we have owned it. It was just in for an oil change, transmission flush, and brakes on the 19th of August 2022. We have never received any notice via email, mail, or from the dealership regarding any recall or potential problem at any time. This car is primarily driven by my wife. I'm glad she wasn't driving when this happened. I will be contacting kia of alhambra tomorrow and possibly having the vehicle towed there.

My 2017 kia Sportage has 74,695 miles. I am the 2nd owner. The engine failed at highway speed, due to so called knock sensor. This the first safety issue, no assisted steering or brakes. I paid to have towed. The kia dealer had no loaner cars. And was told it would take up to ten weeks to get an engine. After the kia dealer replaced the engine. The power steering, alternator, and water pump belt came off. This caused the second safety issue, as there is no powersteering making it very difficult to control as well as third safety issue the computer to stopped the engine. Again I paid to have it towed. The kia dealer found a broken motor mount. Which they did repair and cover. Now the first week out of the kia dealer service department there is a high pitched squeal. The kia dealer just wrote me a quote for $800 plus dollars, stating this vital moving part is not covered.
While the 2018 kia Sportage is in drive proceeding forward I have noticed on numerous occasions the transmission just dies out. When stepping on the gas, you can hear the engine rev but for a few seconds, there is no reaction by the transmission and the vehicle doesn't increase in speed; the vehicle just coasts. This occurs intermittently. While on highway travel this possesses a danger as other vehicles can approach your vehicle quickly and they might not notice you're having a mechanical malfunction. I tried to make appointments with the kia dealership. The vehicle is a 2018 and has 25,000 miles. They threaten me with big bills if the vehicle is not covered under warranty. I finally made the appointment and when I dropped the vehicle off they said it would take more than a week to diagnose the vehicle. There are no warning lamps, bells, buzzers, or any notice being given to the driver that a mechanical malfunction is occurring.
The continued to over heat smoke and has burning smell and seat belt stop tracting and retracting.
Car shakes and putters when started as if the engine is shot, which at this point probably is. I have been adding oil every couple of weeks for over 6 months now with no oil leak detected. I went to the dealer in January to ask about white smoke coming from the tailpipe and dealership tells me I need to blow the engine up before kia will do anything about it. It's now close to blown up with check engine light on having it towed to dealership this week.
I was on the freeway going 55mph when my engine seized (engine light, oil light, and battery light went on) and I was no longer able to accelerate. I had just switched lanes in front of a semi when my acceleration stopped. It was a blessing there was an off ramp by the lane, otherwise the semi would have had to slam on their breaks since my car went from 55mph to nothing in a matter of seconds. No previous warning lights occurred before this incident. Luckily, I was able to coast off the freeway and park. When I restarted my vehicle, the lights went off and I was able to get my car home safely going very slow. The engine know knocks and kia will not give us answers on coverage.
Engine seized twice randomly while driving. Turned car off and back on and it ran without issue. (may 21 2022 and June 30 2022). Had the recall addressed on July 9 and July 12 my check engine light came on. It was towed to kia and they called the following day saying they’re replacing the engine under the extended warranty.
Car shakes and putters when started as if the engine is shot, which at this point probably is. We have been adding oil every two or three for over a year now with no oil leak detected. Dealership tells us we need to blow the engine up before kia will do anything about it. It's not blown up but it is not driveable. Had it towed to the local dealership which diagnosed the problem as being " low compression on cylinder 2 resulting in engine failure. Do not know the exact cause of failure due to no tear down", which cost us $144. 04 on a vehicle that has a lifetime extended warranty on the powertrain. Mind you, they already changed out the transmission June of 2020 and just after that the engine problems started. We paid $502. 85 as our part of the bill. The estimated cost of this engine repair is $3160 dollars plus taxes which still might not fix the problem, and the cost of a new engine is 4 to 5 thousand dollars. My understanding is that we are not the only people having these problems and this is their best response. With all the new vehicles they continue to sell and produce with their good name intact, they should have to recall or replace these vehicles because they were lemons from the start and they suffer no ill affects for it. A list of all the stuff needed to "fix" this problem are as follows: head gasket, head bolt set, intake gasket, t-stat & gasket, water outlet gasket, 4 spark plugs, 6 valve stem seals, lof, 2 gallons of antifreeze 14 assorted head bolts, 4 bushings for bolts, misc and labor. Total for that is $3160 plus tax. *might need head-has no compression-valve burnt/stuck, or seat damage. No cost mentioned for that. Remind you, the engine hasn't been torn down yet. And yes, there is a lifetime powertrain warranty on the vehicle, which isn't worth the paper it is written on.
Over the last year the car has been having the engine light come on. The car idols ruff, loses power and has left me stranded on the side road. I lost power in the fast lane on the freeway and had to maneuver out of the fast lane to side of freeway. Each time it has been taken to shop it has been a mis-fire in the #3 cylinder and the spark plug had to be replaced. Several calls not returned by roseville kia asking for information regarding this problem as well as trying to set up appointment for current recall over the last year. Once again car left me on side of road and was told by mechanic that it needs new engine. Told by folsom kia to have it towed to them since roseville kia would not return calls and that the issue with the engine would be covered by warranty being extended due to past recall. After 4 days at folsom kia I was told that I would need a new engine and starting price to tear it down is $5000, and it would most likely be more, approx$8000. Also told that the warranty does not apply now.
The contact owns a 2018 kia Sportage. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the engine revved loudly, and the rpm was fluctuating. The contact also stated that after shifting into reverse(r), the vehicle was losing motive power. The contact shifted back into park(p) to restart the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic however, the failure could not be duplicated. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a local dealer for an unknown recall repair and the mechanic was made aware of the failure; however, the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 37,000.
Was driving SUV when sudden loss of power to engine, pulled off of highway and loss all power to electrical and to engine, I could smell something burning, upon further inspection after having SUV towed to repair shop, I was informed that starter had melted and engine had seized up, I have contacted kia dealership 3 times with no response from them, I also contacted kia corp and no response, I also notified the bbb, I know there was a lifetime engine repair of this vehicle and some recall on bearings, I did have knock sensor done as required, I am looking for help in filing a complaint and copies of any recalls that were ever issued to this vehicle, I do not get recall notices sent to me, I own 4 cars, all kia, other 3 not having issues yet, any help would be appreciated.

I have taken my 2017 kia Sportage in the dealer several times due to loss of power and hesitation when trying to accelerate. They always say they cant find any issue. Also, my kia is using or losing oil. I get oil changed every 5000 miles and the last two changes I had less then the low mark, barely showing on dip stick. I have had to add quarts of oil after only 2000 miles since oil change. Oil light does not come on, even when showing no oil on dip stick. It is very scary when I go to accelerate and nothing happens when trying to get on on rap for highway.
The contact owns a 2017 kia Sportage. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle the contact would experience illness and dizziness which required medical attention. No additional information was available. Also while operating the vehicle the engine oil light would continue to illuminate although oil was being added to the engine and the vehicle would experience jerking and hesitation while driving. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who performed an oil consumption test but no problem was found. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000.
The contact owns a 2021 kia Sportage. The contact stated while exiting a parking lot, the vehicle lost motive power motive and stalled with an unknown warning light illuminated. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer stated that no failure was found. The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA hotline to file a complaint. The failure mileage was 10,000.

Smoke was pouring out from the passenger front side of the motor compartment. The fuses for the abs (I think) were taken out so it would stop. I was a told a control module could have something to do with it.

Intermittently, the car’s transmission slips out of gear completely, around 30-40 mph. It gets back into gear after a few seconds. At times, it has presented a safety risk especially when attempting to merge on a highway in a short merge lane. When the slipping occurs in this situation, the car no longer accelerates and merging into traffic becomes very problematic and increases the risk of a rear end collision, putting me and my passengers at risk as well as a risk to others the problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by the dealer. It started occurring immediately after I purchased the car used while still under the manufacturers warranty. Because the dealer service department could not replicate the issue, no further attempt to diagnose the issue has been conducted, such as a transmission tear down. I’ve taken it to the dealer at least 3 times for this issue and have documentation. I elevated the issue to the manufacturer but they have offered no solution to the issue because it cannot be replicated by the dealer and there is no recall or other service issue with the model. Melissa from the kia escalation department contacted me today offered no resolution to the matter. There were no warning lamps or other messages which indicated a problem. The kia forum website reveals that I am not the only one with this issue. . Read more...
Transmission intermittently goes into neutral while driving causing engine rev, loss of ability to continue to drive/maintain speed. Very dangerous as you have to drift to the side of the road and put the transmission into park and back to drive to get it to engage again. Meanwhile you could easily be struck by another car trying due to sudden loss of momentum with no brake light warning or trying to maneuver to the side of the road with no engine power. Occurs every month or two. Dealer unable to duplicate multiple times. No warnings before it happens. There are at least 20 other reports of this on the NHTSA site. When will an investigation be opened? this has the potential to cause a serious crash.
