Complaint: fire erupting from 2005 Range Rover hse 2005 Range Rover hse, purchased in 2004-5 from scottsdale, az Land Rover. On June 1, 2010, while vehicle occupant driving to work in phoenix, az, following dashboard message appeared with the abbreviation, "trans failsafe prog. " the Range Rover owners handbook, pg. 79, states that the above message means, "a malfunction has occurred in the transmission. " as to "what to do," the handbook explains, "drive carefully avoiding excessive revs and consult your retailer at the earliest opportunity. " nothing in the message or the handbook indicated that this situation posed a fire hazard and a grave and immediate danger to the car or its occupants. Occupant promptly called Land Rover service representative located at the Land Rover dealership at scottsdale and 101 in scottsdale, az to report the message and to say that he immediately was bringing the car in for service. Occupant drove about 1-2 miles then pulled car over after car would not proceed further. Smoke arose from underneath the front hood. Occupant called triple a, then saw sparks falling below the hood to the ground. 911 was immediately called. Then flames emerged from underneath the front hood, and spread to consume some 90% of the car before the fire dept. Arrived to put out fire. The car is totaled, with insurance offering to pay what it deems is its present value, roughly $30,000.

2 Engine problem of the 1997 Land Rover Range Rover

Failure Date: 04/07/2009

The contact owns a 1997 Land Rover Range Rover. While driving 55 mph, the contact was informed by another motorist that his vehicle was on fire. The contact pulled over, opened the door, and noticed flames underneath the vehicle. The fire department extinguished the fire and a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to his residence. The dealer stated that they needed to inspect the vehicle to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was destroyed and has not yet been taken to the dealer. The VIN was unknown. The failure and current mileages were 100,000.

Failure Date: 02/09/2009

The contact owns a 2000 Land Rover Range Rover. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact smelled smoke and pulled the vehicle off the road. He noticed flames under the hood of his vehicle. Within minutes, the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames. The fire department extinguished the fire and a report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to a junk yard. The contact owns a 2006 Land Rover Range Rover. While driving 30 mph, the contact noticed smoke rising from the vehicle. He was unable to determine where the smoke originated, however, he noticed flames underneath the hood. The fire extinguished after ten minutes. The vehicle was towed. The dealer stated that the fire was caused by a chipmunk living in the engine compartment. The VIN and engine size were unknown. The current and failure mileages were 28,000.
