The car turns on and runs but loses power randomly. It either sputters dead or stalls and backfires. When I turn it off and turn it back on it repeats the cycle. I have replaced fuel pumps, throttle body and maf sensors. And still no luck I see on the Lincoln forums that this is a problem not yet recognized by the nhsta or Lincoln.

I purchased my 2003 Lincoln Ls June/2015. Excellent condition, 35,000 miles. Interior immaculate condition leather seats and carpet virutally untouched. Underneath hood the same, hadn't look as if been driven. Exterior body and paint again excellent. The car appeared as if it had stood still in time. Upon investigation, only one owner of the vehicle who'd maintained a first class maintenance record. Over the last week the vehicle my wife was driving she said while driving the vechicle began to stall while she was accelerating in traffic. She stated she was able to get it out the street but in doing so the engine revved up and shut off. Over the past few days on several occasions the vehicle replicated the exact same tendency with me. Stalling, hesitating during acceleration to the point of shut down in the middle of traffic. In motion on a very busy city street. Engine light also came on.

Whenever the lights were illuminated, the vehicle would decelerate and then stall for approximately three seconds. The engine would have to be turned off and then restarted in order for the vehicle to reset itself. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that the emission coil needed to be replaced. The emission coil was replaced however three weeks after the repairs, the vehicle begin exhibiting signs of the same failure. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 90,958.
The contact owns a 2004 Lincoln Ls. While driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled on the highway and could not be restarted. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, but they could not produce any failure codes or provide a remedy. The contact believes that the dealer erased the codes so that they would not have to repair the vehicle. He stated that the vehicle is unsafe because a rear-end crash could occur as a result of the stalling. The current and failure mileages were 87,000. Updated 04-28-09
the dealer where the vehicle was purchased refused any further troubleshooting on the vehicle. The vehicle couldn't be operated over 1000-1500 rpms's when the accelerator pedal was applied to the floorboard. Updated 04/30/09.

Stalling, jerking surges. Three times the car just came to an abrupt stop. Had to have it towed. My 77 year old mother was left terrified. Overheated jerks into gear. Ford replaced engine coil, but said they could not replace all at once we would have to continue to break down in order to fix each coil. The car always jerks and surges. The results are that we can not go on the freeway for fear of breaking down. No long trips etc.
I am concerned with the safety of my Lincoln. When the coils go bad the car starts missing. I was stopped being a school bus when my rpm's surged to 6500 and my car jolted forward. After the bus started up, I gave the car little gas to go, and it stalled. It stalled on the interstate the evening before. The mechanic told me that 3 coils were out. I have had the same situation 3 or 4 other times. My 2000 Lincoln Ls has had several coils replaced. Mechanic finally determined that the valve cover gasket was bad. After replacing the gaskets, 3 coils went out within several days. I think that from my research, the valve cover gaskets are defective and should be recalled and coils replaced or reimbursement made for coils already replaced. I feel that this is a safety issue when the car surges and stalls on the highway.
