Purchased a 2007 Mkz in 2009 w/24k miles. Since purchase date, the vehicle has had an electronic issue with the braking system, which is triggered anytime the anti-lock braking system is activated while the vehicle is in motion or attempting to stop suddenly. The cpu responds with multiple signals across the dash, sometimes shutting off the vehicle. The braking system and the cpu are usually reset when the vehicle is restarted. Vehicle has been returned to Lincoln dealer for service. Traction control was turned off and returned to owner. To manage this issue over the years, Lincoln dealership has charged owner over $1000 to change brakes and rotors with pads at 40% and rotors have no damage. Apparently restoring the pads and rotors to new restores hydraulic pressure to braking system. After abs system fails, brakes have lost acceptable hydraulic pressure causing vehicle to travel when stopping and grip suddenly. Vehicle can no longer perform sudden stops in emergency. Vehicle is unsafe to drive.

2007 Mkz purchased in January 2009 with 25,000miles has always had issue with abs and cpu failure when activated in motion or emergency braking. Vehicle now has 96,000 mi in March 2021. Lincoln motor CO. Has issued a recall notice#: 19v-904, thirteen years later/oct 2020. The recall is still not available which has allowed the vehicle to suffer long-term damage to the braking system. Lincoln dealership has attempted to manage the problem at owner's expense over the years by replacing brake pads, still at 40% and rotors which have no grooving or warping. Apparently, replacing the pads and rotors are restoring the caliper settings and hydraulic pressure to the braking system. This was performed numerous times over the 13 yr. Period, approx. Every 4000miles, at +1000$ per service. Again, the vehicle travels when braking and cannot perform emergency stops. The solution offered again, to conceal the manufacturer's defect is to replace the brake pads and rotors. 13 years is a disgraceful amount of time to allow an auto manufacturer to deny a defect and avoid any accountability.
The abs module in my car failed on 11/20/19. The car had approximately 53,500 miles at the time of failure. The car had been serviced at the dealer five days prior on 11/15/19 including a multi point system inspection and replacement of the recalled air bags . No "warning" or indicator of a problem with the abs system was identified. When the abs malfunction indicator lights came on I had just turned the vehicle on and was pulling out of my driveway and so proceeded very slowly down my street (which has a downgrade) only to realize I had lost braking power and had to use my emergency brake to firmly / completely stop. I was towed to the dealer who indicated that there would be no warning in an abs module failure and so could not have been identified five days prior. The dealer service advisor indicated he was able to stop the car in the service bay when pulling it forward at a low speed on a flat service. Had I been traveling at high speed or in traffic I am concerned this could have resulted in an accident with potential for serious injury or fatality.

After my wife driving approximately 1/2 mile out of the driveway she lost all of her brakes. The brake pedal went to the floor with no resistance,she shut off the ignition and the car coasted to a stop. She managed to get it back home by turning the ignition on and off. She called autonation Ford and had them toe it in. Autonation Ford confirmed that all braking was lost and they said there was a short in the abs control module. My service advisor stated that he had never seen an entire brake system failure like this. I asked them why an abs control module failure would result in loss of hydraulic braking. They had no answer and were quite indifferent to the loss in braking since they stated that the car is equipped with an emergency brake. Can you believe it???? since the car was 4 months out of warranty they wanted to charge me $2,000. 00 for the repair. I negotiated with a Ford warranty associate and she agreed to pay half of the repair costs. Any vehicle that can lose all braking without a redundant backup is unacceptable. After getting the car fixed I traded it in. The total cost to me was about $20,000. 00. I am particularly concerned for all of the unsuspecting families driving the Mkz. Just imagine! no brakes at 50 mph coming to a stop light, hitting the car stopped in front of you, and having your family and the other vehicles' family carted off to the morgue. I tried to explain the potentially serious outcome of a total brake failure to both the autonation Ford service advisor and to the Ford warranty associate. They were more interested in not covering the car under the warranty than the seriousness of the failure. In conclusion, I sincerely hope that the NHTSA investigate this failure mode and have Ford make the necessary design changes and recall the vehicles with an appropriate fix.
