The consumer was driving off an exit ramp between 35-40 mph when the side air bag deployed. The manufacturer refused to replace the air bag.

At approx. 8 pm on sat. Oct. 9 my wife and I were returning home, traveling on rt. 95 northbound in the center lane of 3, going at the speed limit of 70 mph. Without warning the side air bag on the driver's side deployed. Luckily there were no cars on either side of us,and we managed to get the car under control and off the highway. We inspected the car and could not find any damage. Although we were pretty shook up,we were not injured(due to the lack of traffic). After several calming minutes we continued to our home. Our car is a 2002 Lincoln Town Car. We took the car to where we purchased and serviced the car(wallace Lincoln/Mercury/Volvo-3801 se federal highway,stuart FL 34997,772-283-6000)on Monday(we have an original and extended warranty contract). Wallace gave us a rental car and said they would check it out. The next day wallace service mgr. (russ ellis)reported that nothing was wrong with the car except for the unexplained deployment of the airbag. Since the warranty was with Ford,a Ford engineer had to come to inspect the car. Finally on oct. 20 he came and reported a small dent on the car underside was the result of running over something which caused the deployment of the side impact airbag. Wallace therefore stated they would not cover repairs because of Ford report. We visited wallace to inspect "dent",and could not understand how this could result in deployment. Complained to gm and service advisor who expressed sympathy and agreed to contact Ford upper-level. No reply as yet,but we believe it will be negative. This is certainly a safety problem-deployment of side airbags without a side impact is dangerous. Under car impacts could cause accidents-even deaths.

While driving 45 mph the passenger side air bag deployed inadvertently.

While I was driving our 2001 Lincoln Town Car south on i95 north of baltimore, the left front tire passed over a piece of debris which triggered only the driver's side air bag. Fortunately, I didn't loose control. However, I appear to have sustained some "moderate ,permanent" hearing loss in my left ear between 250-1800 hertz. I have been under a doctor's care since the event and have taken 5 hearing tests without any signs of healing of the inner ear. Local Lincoln dealers indicate that they are not authorized to do the repairs under the warrenty guidelines and refused to fix the air bag/seat even though the car is still under factory warrenty. They directed me to my insurance (geico) . I asked them about having them read out the "black box" hidden analog and pre-even data-they responded that they do not have the software to read this data. Independent companies quote $300 to read out the pre-event data in the washington DC area. I have yet to have the repairs done -which are being covered by geico . I am very concerned about a dealer's inability to assure me that the system is not defective after the repair. I am aware of the odi efforts/analysis related to the tendency of this to happen with this model (before Ford modified the sensor location and software in later productions) and I would like to discuss odi's approach in evaluating that this car has no know safety defects in spite of the large number of non-side accidents triggering the side air bag.

While driving 70 mph driver's side air bags deployed unexpectedly. The door panel,where airbag deployed, ripped the seat. Consumer drove vehicle to dealer for analysis, and dealer did not replace the seat.

While traveling 70 mph, the passenger's side air bag deployed without any impact. There was a very loud explosion and the inside of the vehicle filled with smoke. The air bag did not deflate. The consumers wife suffered heavy bruising and discoloration to her arm.

Consumer noticed that the srs light appeared on the dashboard. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, an]d mechanic determined that side air bags needed to be replaced due to faulty air bags.

While driving 15-18 mph the passenger side door air bag deployed without impact or cause. Both the manufacturer and dealer were contacted. Please provide any additional information.

I had a front end collision in my 2003 Lincoln Town Car and neither the drivers side nor passenger side air bags deployed. It was not until the car had stopped and I was getting out of the car that the drivers airbag deployed. The passenger side never inflated. The impact to my vehicle was so severe that the front end is completely gone and the hood was crumpled back to the windshield. The engine was pushed up against the firewall. Why did my airbags not inflate????!!!!!.

Side air bag failed to deploy on drivers side during a side collision. My car is a Lincoln Town Car 2000 model cartier. I was traveling less than 5 miles an hour when I was broadsided by a pickup truck traveling more than 40 miles per hour. Both vehicles were totaled. I sustained injuries that should not have occurred had the side air deployed properly. I was wearing my seat belt.

While driving 20mph passenger side air bag deployed without warning, causing injuries to passenger in seat. Ts. . .

While driving the passenger side, side airbag deployed without vehicle being in an accident. Please provide more details. Ts.

Airbag light was flashing for a few hours, then stopped. Following day while driving passenger's side airbag deployed. Dealer stated computer showed vehicle was in an accident, and warranty would not cover the repairs.

While driving 75mph, vehicle ran over a peice of tire debris in the road. Rubber hit something under vehicle which caused driver's side airbag to deploy and cause damage to panel of vehicle. Manufacturer says it's driver fault.

Consumer stated after turning the ignition on, the vehicles side air bag deployed without warning, releasing powder and chemicals, causing injury to consumer.

Front driver's side airbag suddenly deployed without prior warning while driving down the street. Dealer has been contatced. The side air bag pushed the drivers left upper arm forward causing the car to move to the right and over a curb and onto a sidewalk, the drivers left upper arm was bruised for 10 days.

While driving passenger's side airbag deployed and injured passenger. Consumer stated that if it had been on driver's side, and consumer was on highway, consumer would have been knocked from steering wheel. That may have been a life threatening situation. Consumer took vehicle to dealer, and dealer stated that consumer ran over something on the road that triggered sensors for side airbag. Vehicle hit nothing. This was second Town Car that that consumer has experienced a life threatening situation. Vehicle pulls to the left. Trunk would not close properly due to it being out of adjustment.

While driving at 15 mph passenger side air bag deployed. Dealer claimed that the consumer was at fault, but repaired the problem anyway. Several months later the exact same problem occurred a while driving across a gravel road. Dealer refused to repair the problem.

Passenger side air bag deployed at 70 mph with no impact to vehicle. Lost control of vehicle temporarily and crossed traffic to other side of road. Regained control after crossing back to original lane shoulder and braking hard. Very frightening experience considering the noise, surprise and dust from the air bag deploying. Only good thing was that no traffic was coming in other lane.

While driving 58 mph another vehicle broadside my vehicle on drivers side door. Upon impact side door seat air bag failed to deploy. Frontal air bags deployed. Driver was knocked sideways towards door and window in vehicle and sustained injuries. Vehicle was totalled.

While driving 40-45 mph, passenger's airbag deployed without prior warning.

While driving at 30 mph another vehicle hit consumer's vehicle on driver's side, driver's/passenger's side air bags didn't deploy.

While riding over a dead dog the passenger side air bag exploded. After contacting the dealer they stated that a sensor underneath the car obviously triggered the explosion. The consumer had to pay a $500 deductible for seat repairs caused in the incident, and was requesting to be reimbursed for the deductible paid because of the defective air bag system.

Driver's side air bag inadvertently deployed while driving at 65 mph. Upon deployment, the air bag busted driver's eye glasses. As a result, driver lost control of vehicle, and ended up on the shoulder on the opposite side of the highway. Driver sustained minor cuts.

While driving passenger's side airbag deployed without warning. Vehicle had no crash. Took vehicle to dealer, and had it repaired.

Driver's side airbag inadvertently deployed while driving at an undetermined speed without vehicle being in an accident.
