Body Problems of Mazda CX-5 - part 1

. . . . . On at least 5 seperate occasions our 2021 Mazda cx5 SUV accelerated to a high rate of speed (on it's own). It has done it to my wife and I both. I contacted two different Mazda service centers and was advised they have no knowledge of this and that there are no open recalls or TSB's and as intermittent as it is it would be almost impossible to duplicate. On July 18th the car accelerated (on its own) again but this time it drove my wife into a tree at aprox. 35/40 mph breaking her ribs. The body shop informed me this morning that the car is a total loss. Mazda needs to get to the bottom of this and resolve this issue ASAP. This time it was a tree, the next time it may be at a crosswalk or at an intersection. It's just a mater of time until someone is killed or at the very least badly hurt. I don't know how Mazda can be unaware of this problem, it's all over the internet. Our body shop pulled it up on line and was shocked at the amount of complaints/ concerns that existed related to this problem. Please investigate this because the next person may not be as fortunate. The windshield on the 2024 Mazda cx5 produces a clicking rattling noise when driving at new speed. I have taken it to Mazda for inspection and they say the windshield is fine. I have noticed I can get the noise to stop by apply pressure onto the windshield from inside the car. Other people have noticed this issue too. I had a suspicion the windshield is not installed well on the car the solution was to get a new windshield which is installed well. The windshield is a structural part of the car, and to know it could not be secured well is concerning.

While I was driving I heard an extremely loud noise (like fireworks). I slightly opened the sun roof cover and saw shards of glass. I pulled over to inspect further and realized that my sun roof glass had exploded! I saw no signs of anything (particularly rocks) that may have caused it. I called the dealer, and they had me bring it in. They have ordered a new sunroof, and gave me a loaner car. Luckily I did not have the inside cover open, or the glass would have shattered all over the inside of my car.

The drivers door is slightly harder to close than the other doors. This occurs when all the other doors and windows are fully closed. The rear camera and warning system has failed numerous times. On one occasion I hit a vehicle because of the failure. Also, the windshield has a leak that sometimes is like a waterfall causing serious visibility problems.

When driving in the wind at speeds greater than 50mph , there is an extremely loud high pitched reedy noise. I have many videos of this and Mazda won’t address it/says it’s not an issue. I travel for work in sd, a very windy state, and often listen to this sound 2+ hours straight and can’t hear any music/phone calls/audiobooks over the noise. It is dangerous because I can’t hear anything but this, and it causes a lot of stress/anxiety/overstimulation. I wish I never bought this vehicle.

When driving at highway speeds, when there are strong crosswinds, as there are prone to be in my area, depending on which way the wind is coming from both doors will make a screeching/howling noise. This noise is very loud and extremely distracting. When it first happens it is very jarring, and depending on the wind conditions can go on for miles, making it very hard to hear anything else. I have taken the car to two dealers who refuse to fix it because they state they cannot reproduce it but it is not something that can be reproduced without specific conditions, but they are aware it exists as they have a TSB indicating how to fix it.

The contact called on behalf of his daughter who owns a 2015 Mazda cx5. The contact stated that while his daughter was loading groceries in the trunk, the liftgate dropped unexpectedly and the corner of the lift gate hit her in the head, causing laceration. The contact's daughter was taken to urgent care where she was informed that she had sustained a laceration and three staples were put on the laceration. The dealer was notified of the failure and an appointment was scheduled. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 16v644000 (structure); however, the recall remedy failed to resolve the safety issue. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the recall repair was one time free of charge and they were not obligated to repair additional failures. The failure mileage was approximately 103,000.

I was driving on the freeway, going about 65 mph at 7:30 am. I heard a loud bang sound and my sunroof glass exploded into pieces. I had the inside cover closed so the glass did not get in the car. The sound was frightening, loud and caused me to pull to the side of the highway. The vehicle has been inspected by insurance representatives and I had used the sunroof the day before - it worked fine.

On July 22, my sister and I were traveling on I-95 going south. We stopped at the maryland house near aberdeen, MD. I was looking for a parking place and was driving very slowly. I slowed further to turn into a place on the right, near the south end of the parking lot and was attempting to put the car in park when the car accelerated abruptly, lurched forward, crossed over the concrete curb at the end of the parking space, and was heading right for I-95 which was straight ahead. I had never taken my foot off the brake. I tried to brake harder but that did not stop the car. I therefore turned right onto a service road to avoid crashing onto I-95. I then noticed a car coming toward me and swerved to the right back toward the parking lot, crossing over the curb at that parking spot, and slamming into a parked car and side swiping a truck. I only took my foot off the brake when the car stopped. The airbags did not deploy. After the car stopped, I was unable to turn the engine off. When driving at above 60-70mph in windy conditions, the car makes a squeaking noise that appears to come from the front left side of the car-- near the driver side window/mirror region. That is quite scary as it coincides with the sideward movement caused by the wind and gives a sense of losing control of the car. Mazda europe has reported something similar but Mazda USA has not done anything about it.

High pitch noise coming from upper side of vehicle while driving on a freeway with strong side winds (35-40mph wind gusts).

The sunroof exploded while driving 70mph on a rural highway. There were no other cars nearby that could have kicked up a rock nor anything that could have fallen on the sunroof. The window buckled outward, not inward. The glass shattered and flew everywhere endangering the driver, passengers, and the car behind me when the window exploded. There was no warning, just a loud boom when the window gave way. My best guess is that this resulted from temperature fluctuation. I was at about 10,000 ft altitude. It froze overnight. The temperature when the window exploded was about 40 degrees, but the sun was out and strong. There was only about a 2,000 ft change in altitude while driving. I can’t imagine that the car seals well enough for the pressure change due to altitude to cause the window to burst, but that would be my second best guess, though a couple thousand feet shouldn’t have cause that big of a pressure change.

I heard a very loud bang, sounding like a gunshot that went off, when the sunroof above my head violently shattered while I driving to work. I almost lost control of the car and got covered with pieces of glass. The glass scratched me on the face, close to my eye. I am in shock and I am still finding small pieces of glass all over my body even after taking a shower.

Brought it in Nov 2020 regarding smells and engine issues as well as alignment. Neither were taken care of. Then March 2021,engine was leaking fluid and smoking, and the engine needed to be replaced at 20k. Did not provide a rental until later that week. After a month, I got my car back. After leaving the engine continued to smoke, brought it back. Gave no rental. Dealer said it was left over fluid from when they replaced it. Car is still having issues with the engine and smells. Under shield fell off and needed to be replaced twice. Tire pressure was going off and brought it in twice for them to say they cant find where the slow leak is or why so they wouldn't fix it even though I have the Mazda insurance for tires.

The rear hatch fails to open in cold weather. I had to climb in through the car and open a small hatch to open the lift gate manually. After I opened it manually it worked properly the rest of the day. . Continues to fail intermittently when vehicle is parked over night in cold weather.

The auto lift gate opens on its own. We just bought this in July and have found it opened on at least 4 occasions. Once outside and the other times in the garage. It opened in the garage and did not realize it when I pushed the garage door opener. It was abutted against the door and caused damage to the lift gate. It is not the fob, because we tried it inside with the door shut and the lift gate does not open.

Driving on a highway @ 65 mph (no other vehicles around & not under a bridge) when without warning, the moonroof exploded outward. Some glass pieces fell into the vehicle, but the majority exploded outward.

Was turning right onto side city street to park, was going maybe 2 miles an hour because I was going to park. The car engine self accelerated and I could not control it, hit a chain link fence and sheared off a natural gas meter to a home. The break pedal did not stop the car, I was in drive put into park and shut the engine off.

Mazda's soul crystal red paint on my Cx-5 that has only 12000 miles and is garaged daily has 12 or more chips on the hood and several on the door. This color was a $700 dollar option and the paint is inferior in quality and easily chips. Have read on line of thousands of other Mazda owners complain of a similar problem with their paint. A recall should be instituted.

Tl- the contact owns a 2015 Mazda Cx-5. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph the glass sunroof suddenly exploded. During the failure the sunroof was closed and a loud explosion had occurred. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer eldorado Mazda located at 2150 n. Central express way mckinney TX. But the cause of the failure was not determined. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not yet notified. The failure mileage was 77,000. I am experiencing substantial chipping of the paint on my 2018 Mazda Cx-5. I have only had the car just under 3 months and under 7000 miles driven. It appears as though the paint is not bonded with the metal underneath the paint. Or that the layers of paint are not bonded. I have heard of many others experiencing same or very issues with the soul crystal red paint Mazda is using. It needs to be classified as faulty paint and handled by Mazda accordingly.

The underside frame/carriage of the vehicle developed corrosion in just the first three years. Granted it is surface corrosion, and not a perforation, still it is not something that a customer expects in the first 3-5 years of owning a vehicle. This indicates a low level of anti-corrosion treatment to the metallic parts of the undercarriage.

The driver's side mirror would vibrate excessively at high speed. The car was taken to two different dealership but they couldn't figure out how to fix that. 2019 cx5 exhibits an excessive vibration from the driver-side power door mirror glass when the vehicle is driven at high speeds. This concern may be due to a lack of rigidity of the mirror base so the mirror vibrates when it receives vehicle vibration or wind pressure. With the weather warming up, stuff inside the door panels is expanding which magnifies the vibration issue. Vibration noise is getting worse coming from both door panels when the car hits a crack, bump, pothole, or when the radio is on. Mazda corporation lacks integrity and refuse to admit that they have a serious issue due to their poor quality control. This is isn't a new problem. 2013-2015 Cx-5 had same issue with driver's side mirror vibration but they issued a recall and the problem was from the door panel which lacked support and was poorly made in the 1st place.

The driver's door on my 2016 Mazda Cx-5 has a malfunctioning sensor that sometimes indicates the door is closed even when it is open. Since the door could be unlatched without an audible chime sounding, it's possible that an owner could be unaware they are driving with the door open. Thus, this vehicle fails to conform to federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) no. 114, "theft protection and rollaway prevention. ".

2017 Mazda Cx-5 with soul red metallic paint, only 19000 miles is exhibiting small chips in the paint. We are noticing chips on the hood, roof, front side panels and doors. Normal driving conditions in upstate NY. We had a 2014 Cx-5 with the same color and this did not have the same problem. We even paid an extra $595 for this special �paint� that now looks horrible!.

Oftentimes when driving at speeds of approximately 80mph or more, a loud whining/whistling noise appears. It appears to be coming from the area of driver side front door, passenger side front door, both front doors simultaneously. The issue has an earlier onset in the presence of crosswind, or headwind. The sunroof glass shattered suddenly while I was driving on the highway. I was going 70-75 mph at the time. There were no other cars around and the weather was perfect so I do not think anything hit the sunroof. I had both the sunroof and interior cover closed completely at the time. The sound when it shattered was very loud and thankfully I was not in traffic. Since the cover was closed, it prevented the broken glass from raining down on my children.

Large fish hook shaped crack on windshield of my 2016 Mazda Cx-5 with 23000 mles. The crack appeared on a 55 degree morning after I pulled my vehicle out of the garage and drove half a block to a stop sign and I watched the crack appear. The crack starts at the top center edge of the windshield goes down about 6 inches, then goes into the view of the driver. It was about 18 inches that morning and has grown to about 30 inches and a huge fish hook shape in the view of the driver. I went to the dealer and was told it was caused by a stone impact. It was not an impact, I should know, I was driving. The dealer also told me that it was not covered under warranty, even if it is a defective windshield or installation at the factory. With a little research I am seeing a lot of Cx-5 owners are reporting similar issues with the windshields cracking for no apparent reason. This is a safety concern the NHTSA needs to investigate.

My lift gate failed and slammed shut. Now, the lift gate is nearly impossible for me to open and I have to hold the lift gate open myself. Otherwise it slams shut. Luckily when this happened I was not directly underneath the lift gate, I had free hands and reacted quickly enough to catch it. I did have the lift gate supports replaced already on July 1, 2017 as a result of the recall 16v644000, but it appears the replacement parts also had the issue. This is dangerous, and a little over one year is not an appropriate lifetime for these supports given the potential risk. The vehicle was parked.

Tl- the contact owns a 2017 Mazda Cx-5. The contact stated that 70 mph when the rear passenger over sender detached from the vehicle. The contact took the dealership (fairway Mazda located at 10101 abercorn extention, savannah, GA 31406 phone number 912-927-1000) who did not acknowledge that the issue was a malfunction of the piece, therefore, the vehicle was not repaired for the rear driver side. The failure occurred twice with the front passenger side, as well as the front driver side. The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who was able to mount the passenger and driver side up with temporary wiring till a permanent repair was able to be had. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and stated that they were unable to assist with the repair. The approximate failure mileage was 19,000. Gl.

While driving on highway, my sunroof spontaneously exploded and shattered into multiple pieces. I was not near a bridge, nor driving by a truck. It just shattered spontaneously.

Hatch lift supports were replace under warranty on 6/5/17 and have failed again talked to dealer and Mazda on 11/26/18 they will not replace them.
