My infotainment screen goes black 10-12 times a year, and therefore I lose access to my backup cameras. I have to turn the car off, and then back on, in order for the screen to function again. This has been happening for the full 8 years I have owned the car. I also have video of this happening, but the file is too large to attach so including photo only.

The vehicle will hesitate/stall while driving down the road. The vehicle has done this multiple times and has actually shut off on 2 different occasions while at a stop. On 2 occasions now the vehicle has not wanted to start. I have taken vehicle to Mazda dealership and they can never duplicate it. When they check for any codes, the vehicle computer does not give accurate times when happened. This last date I took it to them 6/9/25, the computer said it happened 4000 miles ago. The time before, I took it in the morning it happened, 5 min after it happened and the computer said it happened 10 starts ago. The last time, 6/9/25 they said they suspect fuel pump going bad, but until the vehicle gives a "check engine" light or dies all together they are not 100% sure. The vehicle is unsafe if it dies in the middle of the freeway/road with no warning to myself or the other vehicles around me. This has been going on for at least 1 year now, maybe longer dealership has all records. Seeing how the 2018 & 2019 Mazda cx-9 had fuel pump recalls makes me wonder if the 2020 should have been included in this recall. This has been an on going problem. 6/7/25 was most recent incident.

1. The navigation has a frosted crackle appearance framing the screen. It is difficult to read the navigation when needed. I know this has happened to other models of this vehicle and those were recalled and covered. 2. The brake senor keeps going off stating "Smart brake system malfunction". This goes off repeatedly while driving. 3. Then a second message pops up and reads "front radar sensor system malfuntion".

Starting [xxx], through [xxx], we began receiving multiple "critical vehicle malfunction" alerts (46 alert messages)via the Mazda app, including "parking brake malfunction" and "electric parking brake malfunction. " during this time, the vehicle experienced delayed starts and eventually required a jump-start. We brought it to the dealership multiple times to show the messages, before our 3-year/36,000-mile b2b warranty expired, but the issues were dismissed until the battery was finally replaced. At just over 36,000 miles (currently 39,646), a new issue emerged a “thud” sound from the steering wheel. The dealer diagnosed it as a failed u-joint shaft, which was deemed non-serviceable and not covered under warranty. I inquired about potential causes or prevention—no clear answer was known. I found relevant NHTSA tsbs (06-001/20 & 06-001/24) related to steering issues and escalated to Mazda USA. Mazda agreed to cover 50% as a goodwill gesture, leaving me to pay about $500. Two weeks later, the part arrived and was installed—but it did not fix the issue. The dealership now says it’s a failed bearing within the electric power steering (eps) unit, which requires complete replacement at a cost of over $2,000. Only one part is available in the u. S. , with another two-week wait. The original (misdiagnosed) part was already sent back to Mazda. My out-of-pocket cost is now $1,151 and rising. Given the early warning alerts, misdiagnoses, and the fact that eps controls several safety-critical functions (steering, cruise, lane assist, etc. ), I believe this is a fundamental system failure that should be fully covered under warranty or as a safety-related goodwill repair. I respectfully request that Mazda assume full financial responsibility for the replacement and any related work. Thank you for your consideration. Vehicle experienced coolant leak also oil leak from rear of engine. Broken cylinder head due to turbo too close to head.
I was backing out of a parking spot while watching the backup camera when I felt a bump as if I hit something but the camera was showing I have enough space to the cars behind me. It turns out the backup camera image was frozen on the display and I had hit a car parked behind my car. Please investigate and make the manufacturer solve problems with the hardware or the software. Make sure the display shows a warning when the camera fails and the vehicle drives backwards. There may be children behind the car. Shifting into park and then into reverse again caused the camera to work correctly.

Approximately three weeks ago, a message on my dashboard said to pull over immediately. Your car is overheating. I pulled over to a nearby auto shop, which indicated that I was just low on coolant. They topped off the coolant, and everything appeared fine. Two weeks later, I got the same message on the dashboard, saying my car was overheating to pull over immediately. I pulled into a nearby auto parts store and purchased coolant for the vehicle. When I checked the reservoir, it was bone dry. I added coolant and drove the car home. The following day, I checked the reservoir to see if there was still coolant, but it was all gone. I scheduled an appointment with the Mazda dealer to have the car inspected. I also checked the Mazda forum website to see if other vehicles of my make and model had similar issues since I had never experienced this before. I found that the overheating in vehicles of my make and model was a "known issue" with Mazda. When I took it to the dealer the next day, the service agent informed me that the "known issue" was only with the turbo model. I explained that my vehicle is a turbo model. He said that Mazda did not have to cover any costs because no recall was issued, even though it is a known issue. Mazda is now refusing to cover the repair and has indicated that the repair and replacement of the engine will cost approximately $9800. If I had been alerted earlier, I would have been able to have the car repaired.
My Mazda 2017 cx 9 apparently had a coolant leak. When we had our oil changed, we were told it looked like it was leaking from behind the turbo booster. As I was driving it yesterday, the car slowed to an almost complete stop on the interstate and a warning sign on the screen showed that it was overheating to a dangerous level. I immediately pulled over and allowed the car to cool down. I checked the coolant level and it was not very low at all, although I did add some coolant at that time. It continued to overheat and even blew tons of smoke out through the exhaust, so I had aaa tow to my home. After researching this, I have found that there was a bulletin posted in 2021 from Mazda about this very thing happening. My husband thinks that we may have a cracked block or a blown head gasket due to this overheating. This obviously could have caused me to have a wreck on the interstate by my car overheating and shutting down so quickly. We are scheduling to have it towed to our local Mazda dealer to let him do the $99 diagnostic. Based on what he finds, which we think will be confirming what we think it is, we will have to have a new engine put in my car due to a defect in manufacturing from Mazda. Even though my car has 130,000 miles on it and is technically “out of warranty“, we feel this is simply unacceptable and that Mazda should help us with this most definitely. I have so enjoyed my Mazda, and I feel that this is not something of my doing, but rather a defect on Mazda part and it should be addressed.
I have a coolant leak that I have not been able to locate. Despite replacing the radiator, the leak persists. When I contacted the dealer to inquire about estimates for changing the water pump and timing chain, they advised that it would be more cost-effective to replace the entire engine, which would require removing the existing engine at a starting cost of $5,000, with a new engine costing approximately $6,000. They suggested that if I'm already experiencing issues, it might be better to either replace the engine or consider selling the vehicle and purchasing a new one. This response implies that the dealer might be aware of a larger underlying issue and prefers not to address it directly. Experiencing a coolant leak while on the freeway can lead to serious consequences. It can cause the engine to overheat, potentially resulting in significant engine damage and a complete breakdown. This not only poses a safety risk to the driver and passengers but also to other motorists due to the possibility of losing control of the vehicle.

I entered my vehicle one day to find what looked to be cracks in the top left hand corner of my center display infotainment screen. However, they appeared to be internal and could not be felt. After doing some research, I came across service alert sa-008/18 from Mazda which covered this issue on 2016-2018 cx-9s, among other models. I also found a memo dated may 6, 2020, which detailed an extension of warranty service for these internal display cracks. I took my vehicle to my Mazda dealership who inspected the vehicle and told me they would be filing a claim with Mazda for the repair of the screen since there wasn't a current recall for this issue on my vehicle. Mazda agreed to partially cover the replacement with me being responsible for a $543 copay. I have spoken to Mazda corporate about this resolution being unacceptable. This issue is a known manufacturing defect on earlier models of the cx-9, and it is obviously still an issue on the 2019 models. I explained to them that this was in no way a fault of my own and I feel that the screen should be replaced at no charge to me, which was the procedure for those affected by this issue with 2016-2018 models. As of right now, the cracks only affect the top left corner of my screen but I have read of many instances where vehicle owners had the cracks continue to spread, which I feel is very distracting to the driver. I strongly feel that Mazda should be performing a goodwill replacement in full for this issue at no cost to me as the consumer, and I am very disappointed that so far they are unwilling to do so.
Please add the 2021 Cx9 model to the following bulletin. [xxx] this is exactly what is happening with my car and is extremely frustrating that a recall has not been issued to fix the problem. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The infotainment screen has spider like frost inside the screen. I've checked and other models have had this same issue and have been recalled and repaired. My model year 2018 is suffering the same issue and Mazda has lagged on this problem. Please put out a recall on this as it is a hazard when you rely on your navigation system and other components the screen assists with.
I was in a parking lot and came to a stop and placed the car in reverse to back into a parking space. The back-up camera was on and I began to back into the parking space when the car suddenly lurched/jerked forward and accelerated on its own. The car jumped the parking lot median strip and I hit a tree head on. I had my seatbelt on and the airbag deployed. The car then reversed back off the median into the parking lot. I turned off the car. Insurance company will have it inspected. The vehicle is a total loss. I was injured with a large lower abdomen hematoma and airbag burns on arms, wrists, and chest as well as various bruising. I was fortunate to have not hit pedestrians who were walking in the lot or other vehicles that were parked in the lot. There were no warning lights, messages, sounds. The brake assist did not engage. It was frightening.
6/29/2023--vehicle stopped suddenly with I-activesense system malfunction, dynamic stability control malfunction, engine malfunction, engine output reduced, front radar sensor malfunction. Dealer said these faults due to bad battery--replaced battery per service manager ozzie perez at lakeland Mazda. 9/10/2023--incident #2 with same faults as above with vehicle stopping suddenly at risk of creating a rear end collision. Lakeland service manager ozzie perez now said that the faults are due to a faulty erg valve. Lakeland Mazda and ozzie perez are absolutely clueless as to the root cause of this problem and are releasing the vehicle back to the customer with the potential of causing a significant collision that can result in serious injury and/or death.
Cracked cylinder head which lead to coolant leak.
While driving down a 55mph highway with no cars around, our sunroof imploded with a loud crashing sound and spreading glass shards all over our car over all of the occupants including children. It was a cloudy day and the temperatures were in the low 70’s and our sliding fabric cover was open at the time. The dealer has the car as of today but claims that anything glass is not typically covered under warranty.
I was driving on the highway and noticed my car engine temp was way too high. Pulled off to the side and found out it lost all its coolant. Looked under the car and saw the coolant dripping from the engine. If I didnt notice the car was over heating it could of shut down on me causing a safety issue for me or others. I checked online for the issue and found out this has been a problem for years. The Mazda dealership I bought the car from 2 months ago should of known seeing how a TSB was sent out by Mazda. There were no symptoms or warnings prior to this.
Engine cylinder cracked causing overheating and need for a total engine replacement. Service technician said that crack was due to an in factory assembly error - overtightening of components of the exhaust system. This is an issue that has happened in other Mazda cx-9's and Mazda is aware of the problem. Vehicle overheated while on a very busy highway and throttled my speed - I could have easily been hit while trying to get to a safe place to park.
I was driving on interstate and there were not any other vehicles that were all that close to me. All of a sudden there was this huge extremely loud bang and glass shattering sound. Scared me to death. I never saw anything, I pulled over at next exit and saw my sunroof with a huge hole and shattered. I drove back by where I was driving and there was nothing I could see that could have caused that to happen. After doing a little research I'm positive the sunroof exploded. Thankfully my kids were not in there and I was able to remain calm enough to get pulled over safely.

On the last week of may, my car started experiencing sputtering and stalling out problems. I made an appointment at Mazda dealership for June 6th. Meantime my husband checked all fluids and coolant was low so we topped up. Car was being driven very limited due to safety concerns. Then while driving on the freeway my car displayed a “excessive engine temperature, engine output will be limited” immediately my car reduced speed from about 65mph to under 15 mph while having my whole family including myself and 4 children in the car. We almost got hit by several cars while trying to get over to the shoulder. Once pulled over to the shoulder my husband came and followed me home on the back streets. Once again checked fluids and coolant again was back low this time empty. So in a day it completely had no coolant left. When taken into Mazda dealership for the appointment, customer service was so horrible I ended up leaving and taking my car to a 3rd party service center. Was advised to have a hydrocarbon test on cooling system that measured at zero, then advised to take it for a diagnostic due to the sputtering, stalling and coolant leak, where they ultimately determined the coolant was leaking into combustion chamber &/or intake system. Pressure test shows drop in pressure, no visible external leaks present. TSB# 01-002/23 pertaining to cylinder head assembly replacement. Now I’m waiting for my appointment at a different Mazda dealership on June 12th! please help.
Internal cracks in Mazda connect center display. There was a "notification of warranty extension program- special service program (ssp)" dated may 6, 2020.
We were on the freeway and all of a sudden it stopped accelerating and the engine light, sensor light, and sensor warning came on. We could not accelerate, that became disabled and we had to pull over. My husband said our fluid levels were normal and he checked them all in the shoulder of the freeway. We turned the vehicle off then on again and all lights went away and we continued on. This is a safety hazard because the car would not accelerate while we were going 60 mph on the freeway. I quickly took a picture of the dash as this was happening so I can take it to the dealer.
Sorry there was no incident.
Driving home the car said 26 miles to e. While in gear going down the road it popped engine system malfunction and the whole car shut off and wouldn't start. Didn't drive the vehicle for 2 days- filled the gas tank and it drove fine for 5 days. Day 6- 4/8/2023, fine driving down the highway 45 minutes. Go down about a mile and it still doesn't seem right, I move lanes and the thermostat light starts flashing at 260, as soon as I make the turn it tells me to pull over and turn the car off-it was at 270. Go to drive across the street to get coolant later- car stalls when I shift into drive. Park it- get coolant takes an entire jug. Idling a little rough, but not bad. Mechanic he can't see any issues, computer is throwing out fuel system codes but no, issues that can be found. Does a tune up on it, pick it up. Smoking when I start the car and something smells burning. Driving home, it stalls again while in gar at a red light. Rpm jumping between 500 and 750 while in gear. Park it for a few hours- everything seems fine. Drive 35 minutes- mostly highway. Rpm isn't moving when in park vs neutral. While at last red light before home- engine system malfunction comes on. Driving a few miles down the road still on, temperature at 200. Drive about half a mile down the road- at 260 as I'm pulling into my driveway. Towed to Mazda the next day. Got diagnosis that the head lifted and coolant mixed into oil, flooding engine. Need a new engine and turbo- $10,000 to fix it. Never had issues prior and no signs of anything going wrong. Oil change done 2 weeks prior to this all starting.
My check engine light came on. Thought it was the oil needing to be changed. Oil was extra dark and muggy. Also notice antifreeze low. Fill up antifreeze and change oil. 2 wks later antifreeze back down low. Check engine still on. Got it diagnosed with auto scanner and says camshaft sensor. Went to autoshop, mechanic says it's not cramshaft sensor but water tank leak in engine which was picked up by camshaft sensor. I have yet to find out what else is wrong or if my engine needs to be replaced. For sure the water tank needs replacement. I read from others of their car over heating or completely stopped working. I fear this because I have 3 kids and on weekends I drive on the highway for about an hour to get to my destination. This is something dangerous because I don't want to get rear ended or hurt if my car suddenly gives out during heavy traffic.
Vehicle infotainment screen is developing a spider crack which its expanding over time; screen won't be usable in the future and/or may crack completely at any moment. Mazda is aware (service alert no. : sa-008/18 and campaign sspb9) and unwilling to replace/repair the faulty display, car is from 2019 with 45k miles and out of basic warranty . I was told that if regular services (oil change etc. ) were done at the local dealer (Mazda of north miami)they would have probably helped me with this issue. ; last service with local dealer was on 06/2022 for another warranty claim. Very disappointed. Mazda report# 00099443.
Internal (growing) spider cracks on center displays. The cracks are internal and cannot be felt by touch. Visibility risk when trying to use the backup camera. This problem is known by Mazda and they've issued a service alert (attached) for models 2016-2018 but for some reason excluded 2019. Currently Mazda seems unwilling to cover the repair.
This vehicle does not have a traction control device switch to manually turn off. In snowing conditions and trying to ascend a grade, the tcd activates and eventually you become disabled in the roadway. I looked into the car manual and it does locate where the switch should be located, however my vehicle switch button is a blank button. I phoned my dealership and reported the problem. They advised other vehicles in their lot did not have the switch as well. No other advice was explained. I reached out to Mazda customer car, and they advised me to contact the dealership. Problem remains un resolved.
Severe spider cracking on infotainment screen - the same as a recall for earlier Mazdas but worse than any of the pictures I've seen online. The entire left edge and both corners on the right side. It started when the weather turned cold in December 2022 and grew throughout the winter. I'm worried it will continue to grow this winter.
I was resting my foot on my brake in the middle of sealed traffic and when I eased up to move forward when traffic my brakes did stop causing me to bump the car ahead of me. After that what came next was that my car then accelerated forward with my foot still on the brake. By then 2 other vehicles were involved in this accident. My car is now totaled from this.
Infotainment screen (lcd) of Mazda cx-9 2018 has developed what looks like discoloration/scratching/frost in corner of screen about 2 years ago and it is continuing to spread over last 6 months. This screen is used for hands-free bluetooth/calling (which is now the law in iowa) and the back-up camera which allows for safe backing. If screen is unreadable, these safety functions cannot be performed properly. I take my car into Mazda dealership for maintenance/oil changes and it has never been addressed as an issue, but I'm concerned.
