1 Brakes Failed problem of the 2016 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 08/02/2020

I parked at the top of my driveway at a slight incline position with the emergency brake engaged and the car was in second gear (manual transmission). It was in a stationary position at that time. My family exited the vehicle and we went inside our home. Approximately a half our later I notice my car rolled down my driveway and crashed in between two trees on my property. Either the emergency brake failed or the car's transmission failed while parked. The car was found at the bottom of my property still in gear and had the emergency brake in the engaged position.

2 Brakes Failed problem of the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 07/08/2018

The engine began revving high as I took my foot off the accelerator and apply the brakes as I approached a traffic red light. I put the car in neutral to see if by tapping the gas pedal it would stop revving. It did not. With my foot on the brake pedal to the floor, I put the car in drive and the car sped forward despite my foot on the brake pedal. I went through a red light trying to make a left turn on to a major highway, crossed a median strip, clipped a vehicle in the rear, turned the car trying to avoid collisions with other cars, went off the road hitting utility pole and transformer box on the opposite side of the highway, finally coming to rest with air bags deployed on the driver side. This happened on July 8, 2018, a Sunday afternoon. No one was hurt, but obviously shaken and confused how my brakes could fail on a car recently in for its 10000 mile scheduled maintenance 9 days prior. Researching this on line found similar incidents of this occurring with Mazda 3 vehicles and other manufacturers (I. E. Toyota). Referred to as sudden unintended acceleration (sua). There are many reported cases of sua, some where drivers are at fault. My case was clearly mechanical defect related.

3 Brakes Failed problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 04/12/2018

Takata inflators. Highway traffic had come to a stop and while trying to come to a stop my brakes completely failed with the pedal pushed all the way down. The car barely slowed down and rear ended the still car in front at approximately 40 mph. Even with such a forceful impact the airbags didn't come out.

4 Brakes Failed problem of the 2006 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 04/01/2017

Approaching a redlight at a highway intersection, my son pressed his foot down on on the brake and the brakes failed. The pedal went all the way to the floor and did not work at all and resulted in an accident that destroyed the car and injured the occupants of the car he struck. The car was purchased used. The previous owner had the brakes completely repaired when the same thing had happened while braking. I was not aware of the specifics of the brake repair until after the accident when I inquired as to why he had replaced the brake booster prior to my purchase. Internet searches after the accident seemed to indicate that this happened with some frequency to others and I wanted to make sure I let someone know.

7 Brakes Failed problem of the 2014 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 12/27/2014

Having spent approximately 10 miles in stop and go traffic, the traffic picked up again, only to come to another stop. I was unable to stop because my brakes had completely failed, my foot went to the floor and I had no braking response at all. I tapped the vehicle in front of me, no damage to his car, so we decided not to call the police. My car sustained cosmetic damage to the front end, pushed the left front fender back so I was unable to open the driver's door. I was approximately 250 miles from my home when this incident happened. The following day I did a test panic stop in a parking lot, and the brakes then responded appropriately.

9 Brakes Failed problem of the 2008 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 05/21/2012

While driving approx 75 mph on a highway, my power steering suddenly failed, and simultaneously my brakes failed (felt like they locked up, as they became extremely difficult to push pedal). I had to shift suddenly in to neutral in order to reduce my speed and pull safely to the shoulder. This same incident also occurred on 8/10/2012.

10 Brakes Failed problem of the 2007 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 02/06/2011

Emergency/parking brake failure I parked my car in the driveway at my mothers house at the top of the driveway, which is relatively flat and only a very slight incline. There is a portion of driveway between the sidewalk and the house level which is steeper; however my car was parked above that area and on the flat portion. The car is a manual transmission and I had set the car to neutral with the emergency parking brake on. About 20 minutes after the car had been parked, it rolled backwards- down the driveway, out into the street and hitting 2-3 trash cans, and ended up jumping the curb on the opposite side of the street. The rear left tire was up on the curb and the Mazda 3 collided with the rear right corner of another parked vehicle. I witnessed the incident from inside the house and there were several other witnesses. When we looked at the Mazda 3 after it had come to a stop on the opposite curb, we saw from the outside that the emergency brake was indeed engaged. Background information on vehicle use: I always fully engage the brakes before parking and setting the emergency brake. When parking on any obviously sloped surface, I always put the car into gear (into 1st when sloped upwards, and into reverse when sloped downwards) and set the emergency brake, as well as turn the wheels toward the curb when parallel-parked. I have kept up with normal scheduled maintenance and have read through the owners manual which does not mention anything about when to inspect the emergency brakes effectiveness. I had the issue inspected by the Mazda dealer 2/7/11 and they said they "could not duplicate my issue", also that everything was in proper working order. All they could do was adjust my parking brake (which does feel tighter now). I asked if there is anything I should do differently when I park. They answered that I have been using the correct parking procedures.
