Driving from wisconsin to chicago illinois the power steering failed. When I stopped at a toll booth and started on the road again, the power steering was ok as soon as the car started to move. Same thing happened again on the same day driving on south on hwy i55 about 30 miles from home. When I stopped at a stop light coming into town and then left the stop light, again the power steering returned to normal. On another day, it happened one time after the car had been parked on an inclined. I backed the car up and could feel the power steering was gone but after the stop and then going forward, the power steering was ok. Again another day, it happened backing out of my garage but after stopping and then going forward, it was ok once again. Stopping the vehicle seems to cause the power steering to fix itself. I took it to the dealership. No codes could be retrieved. I only saw the little steering wheel light on the dash one time during these episodes although the light may have been on and I didn't notice it except for the one time. Not getting any satisfaction from my dealership, I called [xxx] , the car doctor. I was told by him, that this should be reported at this site as he felt it was a safety issue. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

On August 29th while driving with my 2010 Mazda 3, going about 30 miles an hour, the power steering wheel locked up, and all the warning/indicator lights came on. I completely lost control of the car. I tried to re-start the car, but the car would not start and the warning/indicator lights came on steady, with the exception of the “electronic steering lock warning light”, which was flashing red. It was not a battery issue because the radio and lights worked fine. I had the car towed to a Mazda dealer. The Mazda dealership said that they did not know what the issue was because they could not access the pcm to read the error code to understand what happened, and they ended up replacing the pcm. I called Mazda customer assistance and complained and they told me that the pcm failure does not relate to the steering wheel locking up. This is similar to complain #10461029. I do not feel safe driving this car again, and I would like Mazda to take it back. It only has 23000 miles, and I have another 6 month to go on my lease.

While I was driving on 101n, I saw the power steering light illuminating. Steering wheel felt stiff and I have to fight it to keep the car in control while I was making a turn at 45mi/hr. I have experience this issue over 20 time now. On 12/7/12 this issue occurred so many times that I had to park my car at a random shopping center and have a friend pick me up. Unfortunately when I called the dealer, they told me that its not a similar issue as the 07-9 model, so they have to charge me a $150 diagnostics fee. I am currently at 94,385 miles and my extended coverage also expired. Based on my research it will be an expensive repair, somewhere close to 1700-2000. I'm not sure if Mazda going to do anything about this issue, but id like my voice to be heard.

When driving over bumpy roads, my power steering light comes on, sometimes losing power steering making it very difficult to drive the car. It has never happened on the highway, but there's no rhyme or reason for when it will come back on or why the steering goes out or not. Two mechanics I've taken it to can't seem to find anything wrong and one thinks it could be the power steering pump.
The contact owns 2007 Mazda Mazda3. The contact stated that while driving 48 mph, a popping noise emitted from the steering column and the steering wheel seized. A steering assist warning light also began to illuminate on the instrument panel. The vehicle was merged to the shoulder and shut off. The failure continued upon restart. The vehicle was then towed to a local mechanic, who inspected the vehicle and stated that there was a recall addressing the failure. An authorized dealer was notified and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 10v374000 (steering: electric power assist system). The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was unknown.
Backing out of my driveway on 10/5/11, notcied that my steering wheel felt harder to turn intermittenly, at the same time, the radio and dash board lights flickered and all the lights flashed. I stopped and returned into the driveway , where the car repeated to flicker lights and radio everytime I would turn the wheel. It did this until I shut the car off and then turned it back on , with no problems through out the day. On 10/8/11, I was turning into a gas station and the same thing happened , I was in the middle of turning so I finished my turn and attempted to park all while noticing my vehicle turning off and power steering light on. Car was completey off by the time I could get it to a secure location . The car would not turn on at al , the battery seemed comepletey dead , where I needed roadside assistance to turn it back on . No problem through the rest of the day since that happened.
I have a 2006 Mazda 3 with approximately 53,000 miles. While I am driving on the road, the radio will suddenly turn off, the power steering light comes up on the dash, and then the power steering completely fails. Sometimes, the power steering light comes on, but then doesn't shut off. It wasn't too frequent at first, but on some days, it will happen everytime I drive somewhere. It usually occurs early in the drive. Once I turn off the engine and restart, it usually resets and my car is fine. I have seen the recalls for the 2007 Mazda 3 models, but I think my car should also belong in this too. Please help. The mechanics have been unable to detect the problem.
On September 3, 2011 I purchased a brand new 2011 Mazda 3 from Mazda of escondido. On Tuesday September 13, 2011 I started my vehicle and turned on the headlights at which point the power steering light and also the traction control warning lights came on. As I was trying to park my vehicle I noticed difficulty with the power steering. Also, the dsc button would not turn on/off while the light was on. On Monday September 19, 2011 the same two lights came on again. I took a picture of the lights and the odometer reading so we could show the dealer. Due to a prior wrist injury power steering is a must for me.
Mazda3 hatchback 2009. The power steering light was on first time around 15000 miles. After that everything was fine and I got mail from Mazda3 said this car need a recall for power steering issue. I returned the car to dealer around 36000 miles and thought everything is good. However, started from this Jun, the car became much worst. It would automatically shut off during driving and the situation happened often. I even video record the incident for the dealer. I returned my car to dealer once every month from Jun, this is the 3rd time. I guess the dealer don't know here is the problem is. It is very dangerous. Happened to my once in the exit of highway, once when I turn right in the middle of intersection. Note: before it shut off, every indicator light will turn on.
The contact owns a 2007 Mazda 3. The contact stated that the upon starting her vehicle the power steering light was illuminated and there were no steering capabilities. The power steering assist would reset itself within minutes and the contact was able to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic who advised her that the power steering pump would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 111,000. The VIN was unavailable.
First incident was about 1 month ago, while turning at a slow rate of speed the radio went out, the power steering went out, and the steering light on the panel lit up. Everything came back within about 5 seconds. This started happening more frequently, and yesterday it happened nine times in the span of a 13 mile drive. Took the vehicle to our regular mechanic and he said that the power steering pump needs to be replaced. I find it strangely coincidental that the 2007-2009 makes of this vehicle were all recalled for this very same reason.
The contact owns a 2005 Mazda 3. While the contact changed lanes at 35 mph the power steering locked twice. She was able to apply pressure to the steering wheel in order to keep the vehicle in the lane. The power steering light illuminated while the failure occurred and within a few minutes, the power steering light indicator shut off and the vehicle began to function normally. The dealer stated that the VIN wasn't included in the power steering recall; therefore, she would be responsible for the repair cost. The manufacturer will be notified of the failure. The failure and current mileages were 53,192.
The contact owns a 2006 Mazda 3. The contact was driving 10 mph when the power steering warning light illuminated followed by a loss of power steering assist. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not under recall. The contact believed that the manufacturer should initiate a recall for the failure. The failure and current mileage was 52,000.
I had just bought my 2008 Mazda 3 and as I was getting ready to leave the dealership with it, when I went to back out of the parking space the car had no power steering when not 1 hour before I took it for a test drive and it was fine. The power steering light was on. When I took it down the road to the service center they stated that this is common for this vehicle when the weather gets hot. It was about 95 degrees that day. The power steering pump was replaced. I told the service manager that I was lucky this didn't happen while I was driving or something serious may have happened. He agreed.
The power steering on my 2008 Mazda 3 suddenly gave out on me while I was stopped in traffic and the power steering fault indicator light came on. Re-started the engine and it was fine after that. This is a huge safety issue while merging through traffic.
I drive a 2008 Mazda 3 hatchback. Recently my wife was driving the car in hot day (about 95 degrees) and the power steering just went out. The car's equipped with a power steering failure indicator light and it did not turn on when this happened. This is the second time this has happened under very similar circumstances. The car worked fine after being parked in a garage for 24hrs or so when the power steering failed last time. Updated 08/19/bf updated ivoq 08/23/jb.
Random power steering failure. When driving on highway approx 65mph, the yellow dash indicator warning light for the power steering system illuminated and power steering stopped working. I exited the highway after a few minutes and pulled into a side road (with no power steering), and then all of the sudden the power steering light extinguished and it worked fine again. This was a very dangerous situation, especially for those who do not have more than average strength to turn the steering wheel without power steering!!.
The contact owns a 2008 Mazda 3. The contact was stopped with the brakes depressed when the power steering warning light illuminated. As the contact attempted to accelerate from the stop, the steering wheel became extremely stiff. The contact moved the vehicle off the roadway and shut the engine off. When restarting, the vehicle operated as normal. The vehicle was neither diagnosed for the cause of failure nor repaired. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 16,000 and the current mileage was 17,500.
I was driving my 2008 Mazda 3 "s" and when I heard a loud pop and the power steering light came on and a growling sound coming from the car. Trying to pull over was difficult as there was no power steering. Mileage on the car is 38500. Just 2000 miles over the factory warranty. Upon researching this online I have found that there are numerous complaints for failing electric power steering pumps in the 07-10 Mazda 3's. This seriously needs to be looked at as this could lead to an accident.
My 2008 Mazda 3 was idling in the parking lot on two separate occasions and when I went to back out my power steering light comes on and I'm unable to steer my car. I am afraid this is going to happen while I'm driving, and cause someone to get killed. My power steering fluid is above the max line and everything seems to be alright. After turning my car on and off several times it eventually starts working correctly.
While turning into a parking lot, loss of steering power occurred when turning quickly in the each/opposite direction. Loss of power indicator light was on. Car was restarted and resumed normalcy. Mazda dealership (dennis dillon, boise, id) was called the next day, and they wanted to immediately look at the car. The technician acknowledged that this may be an ongoing problem, and was familiar with similar issues with this model. Parts were ordered (steering hoses, assembly, etc. ), and service completed within 3 days.
Power steering has failed on my 2009 Mazda 3 gt sport in 2 incidents - July 14, 2010 and August 11, 2010. In both cases, the power steering light came on and it was difficult to maneuver the car. Once I shut off the vehicle and restarted, the power steering light was no longer lit and the power steering was operational again.
The contact owns a 2010 Mazda3. While driving 65 mph the vehicle lost power within a few seconds and the power steering light illuminated. The steering failed and the contact experienced electrical failure with the passenger door that could not be unlocked from the inside. The sunroof button also would not shut the sunroof. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing who was unable to locate a failure code; therefore, they stated that nothing was wrong with the vehicle. The manufacturer took report number 132669400. The failure mileage was 13,800. The current mileage was 13,900.
I was driving my 2008 Mazda3 in heavy traffic on a 90 degree day and the power steering failed. We heard a thump, like running over a pavement reflector, then 20 seconds later the power steering light came on. I had to use two hands to pull it off the highway. After a restart, the light went off and the power steering came back.
The contact owns a 2009 Mazda3. While driving 5 mph the contact noticed that the power steering had suddenly stop functioning causing the contact to crash into a nearby pole, seconds later, the contact noticed that the power steering warning light had appeared on the dashboard. No one was injured and a police report was not filed for the incident. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where the contact was informed that the vehicle was performing normally. There were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages was 22500.
While driving vehicle navigating a slight right turn at approximately 10 to 15 mph power steering failed and dash light came on. Was unable to turn vehicle in time and hit a curb, causing damage to vehicle rim and tire.

The vehicle was shut off for approximately 30 minutes and after she turned it back on, it began to function normally. The failure has since recurred intermittently. While sitting in traffic on a hot summer day I went to change lanes to grab a coming exit, in the middle of my lane change the car became extremely hard to turn, to the point that I almost hit the center median. Once I was going straight I looked at my dash and the power steering light was on. I pulled over I turned the car off an on and my power steering came on. The next day I went to the Mazda dealer and they quickly recognized the problem and put in a new power steering pump. The fact that the Mazda dealer was aware that this type of problem was possible on my car but did not tell me led to me almost being in an accident.
