1 Tire Valve problem of the 2008 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 07/30/2015

The contact owns a 2008 Mazda 3. While driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle veered out of control and the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. The tire pressure monitor warning light illuminated. The contact discovered that the front passenger side tire valve stem failed and caused the tire to become deflated. The vehicle was not diagnosed, but the tire was replaced. The failure recurred with the front driver side tire, but the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 70,000.

3 Tire Valve problem of the 2009 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 11/25/2013

I constantly have issues with my tire pressure being low. I went to fill my tires up for the 3rd time in 4 months and as I put the compressor to the tire valve, the valve snapped off. All the air poured out of my tire. Luckily I wasn't driving at the time. I changed the tire to my donut and drove immediately to my tire center. They looked at the broken valve and told me it had corroded and that the whole tpm system would have to be replaced. He also went on to tell me that this is common. I asked him "so, should I be worried about this happening again with a different tire?" and he said that he would be lying to me if he told me that I shouldn't be concerned. $150 and 4 hours later, I had a new tpm system in that tire. Keeping my fingers crossed every day that it doesn't happen again.

4 Tire Valve problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 07/18/2013

Within 2 days of driving, my Mazda 3 had two separate incidents, where the valves of the tire pressure monitoring system (tpms) failed, on two separate tires. On Monday, July 18, 2013 while traveling at highway speed on rt. 25 in bourne, MA, the tire pressure warning light came on. I stopped at the nearest gas station. The driver's front tire was very flat. When I attempted to fill it with air, the valve pushed into the tire. Luckily, I was at a gas station and they were able to repair the tire with "standard" (non-tpms) valve and I was on my way. As I was on vacation. I parked the car for a week. When I returned to my car (July 22), I drove the car for about 50 miles. I stopped to have lunch and noticed that the driver's side rear tire was very flat. When I attempted to put air into the valve, it too pushed into the tire. That is two tpms valves that failed in two days of driving. I called Mazda customer service (800-222-5500, ext. 6) explained the situation to jose (ext. 1180). He was sympathetic, but would not commit to Mazda repairing the tpms valve at no cost to me. I am having my mechanic put in non-tpms valves in the remaining two tires on the car, as I feel they are a real safety hazard. I will not drive the car until it is repaired. . Read more...

5 Tire Valve problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 07/13/2013

The documented date above (07/13/13) is my most recent incident with my valve stem/tire pressure monitoring system falling off while driving. In June 2012 with ~34,000 miles, while driving on the highway, my first valve stem/tpms fell out, not being able to drive on that wheel (no air), and the wheel could no longer be used until I had a Mazda dealer replace the part. This was a very dangerous experience for my tire to suddenly deflate while moving at fast speeds. This was fixed under my almost terminated warranty. One month later, the valve stem/tpms on another wheel came off while driving and this had to be replaced like the other one. Most recently, my third wheel tpmsensor went while also driving on the highway, vigilantly maintaining control on my vehicle until I could pull off the highway. This trend shows a huge safety issue/inadequate parts used during construction. There is no prescribed care for these parts in the Mazda owners manual nor is there anyway to know that these would malfunction until they did. 3 out of 4 is unacceptable and unsafe and should show a trend. When I called Mazda, they told me that the cost of this recent repair was mine because the vehicle, now at ~55,000 miles was no longer under warranty. These parts were dysfunctional from the beginning and should have all been replaced at my first incident if this was to happen again, and again. I am nervous that this could happen to my fourth wheel while driving, potentially causing an accident.

6 Tire Valve problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 07/09/2013

Tpms alerted driver to low air pressure in a tire. Checked tire, pressure low (subsequently found screw in tire). Once air nozzle place on valve stem, it snapped in half and all the air immediately went out of the tire. Others checked and are corroded and brittle. Dealer and local auto mechanic both stated likely to happen again without warning. Materials used in the valve stem should be changed to make them flexible, like the older ones without the monitoring system. Replaced valve stem with $5 stem of flexible material to prevent safety issue in the future.

7 Tire Valve problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 06/09/2013

June 9th 2013, vehicle experienced loss of inflation pressure in passenger front tire while driving. Dealership confirmed tpms valve seal failure was root cause of air loss. Check of other tpm sensors confirmed driver side front seal was also defective and leaking small amounts of air. Both replaced under warranty with dealer indicating this as a known issue. September 16th 2013 passenger rear tire experienced airloss while driving vehicle. Dealer investigation confirmed tpm valve failure. Part not covered under warranty or dealer goodwill. Failure of safety-critical part after ~3 years of field exposure is not acceptable.

8 Tire Valve problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 05/06/2013

On or about 4/24/2012, I had to purchase a new set of four tires at the firestone dealership on route 36, west long branch, NJ 732-542-0995. Please also note I had my Mazda 3i for only a little over 2 years at that time. Within the last year, I have already had to replace two of those tires due to leaks/blowouts. Upon taking my car back to the self-same firestone dealership in west long branch, NJ for closer inspection, ed gonzalez, the manager, indicated to me that the tire valve stem on the tire most recently "deceased" (left rear) had actually fallen out of the tire and into the wheel well without ever being touched by anyone previously (I have photos of defective stems. Upon closer inspection, the tire valve stem in the right rear tire is also defective to the eye. I have both defective stems and [xxx] will attest-in writing-to the fact that they are both defective-and the original, factory-installed tire valve stems that I received on my Mazda 3i in February, 2010. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

9 Tire Valve problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

Tire pressure warning light came on, so I checked the pressure of each tire. One was low, so I asked my mechanic to fix it. He found the leak was a cracked valve stem assembly, allowing air to escape along the valve stem. Fortunately it didn't damage the new tire, but still cost $150 to fix and I found this to be a common complaint for the Mazda3. For me, the safety issue is having this problem happen when my wife is driving this car on a trip, sees the warning light come on, and has to find help to fix it or to change the tire for the spare, or the leak becomes fast enough to give her a flat tire.

10 Tire Valve problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 12/23/2012

Spontaneous failure of tire valve stem resulting in the near instantaneous decompression of the rear driver's side tire. At the time I was attempting to check the tire pressure of that wheel. The stem separated into two pieces without any prior indication of wear.

11 Tire Valve problem of the 2009 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 10/07/2012

Tire pressure light came on I pulled over and valve stem blew a pin out. Road side assistance called to help me and verified it was a pressure valve stem fault. Seems to be a long reported issue with this make and year. Was informed to check all other tire stems for defects.

12 Tire Valve problem of the 2008 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 10/01/2012

The tire pressure monitoring system is unreliable. Specific incidents: 1. Warning light flashes or lights when the tire pressure is within the specification limits. This has been an intermittent problem for at least a year. 2. One tire pressure sensor fell apart on inspection, after warning of a leak. Dealer replaced it at no charge. 3. One of the tire valves (and hence pressure sensor) was leaking air when the valve cap was removed, replacing the valve cap held the air in the tire. Dealer adjusted the tire pressure sensor at no charge. 4. One of the tire pressure sensors failed. Dealer stated it was no longer under warranty and charged me for replacement. Car is not driven off road. Sensors seemed to be more irregular after driving on rough highway roads, where a layer of asphalt had been removed.

13 Tire Valve problem of the 2008 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 09/29/2012

The first time this happened, I was driving on the highway at approximately 75 mph in the center lane of an express road. While driving, the tpms sensor warning light/sound came on and the tire went immediately flate - total catastrophic failure. I was able to pull off to the side of the road without further incident and when we looked at the tire, the tpms sensor had fallen out causing the tire to go flat (it is attached to the valve stem) the treads were corroded and the nut cracked causing the sensor fall out and the tire to go flat. This one was replaced. 8 months later, the same thing happened but this time on the driver's side front tire. The nut cracked and the sensor fell out causing the tire to go flat. Thankfully this time it happened just after I had pulled off the highway for a bathroom break and was not driving at speed when the second incident occurred - although if it had happened a few minutes prior, I would have been driving at approximately 75 mph in wet road conditions. Upon examination we found that the thread were again corroded, causing the nut to crack and the sensor to fall out. This is a very dangerous situation - catastrophic failure of a tire at highway speeds is a recipe for disaster. This situation should be taken very seriously by Mazda.

14 Tire Valve problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 08/21/2012

The contact owns a 2010 Mazda Mazda3. The contact stated that the front passenger side tire valve stem failed. The contact mentioned that the valve stem cracked in half. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The failure and current mileage was 24,750.

15 Tire Valve problem of the 2009 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 08/18/2012

Mazda has a major problem with the valve stems breaking even with the oem caps but they still insist operator error and or there where aftermarket ones on at the time of the breakage.

16 Tire Valve problem of the 2008 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 08/10/2012

At approximately 55 miles an hour the in-tire pressure monitoring system's rim attaching nut corroded off of the valve stem on the tire. Tire pressure dropped immediately and had to stop and pull off the road. The valve stem fell into the tire once pulled over and inspected. All 4 tires all corroded evenly and need to have the stems and nuts replaced. I've opted for a rubber valve stem whilst submitting complaints. I still have not had the 3 other tires fixed. Replacement non-aluminum tpms are 35-50 a piece + installation. 1. Cheap nuts that crack and fall off tire stems. 2. Aluminum stems that corrode completely removing the threads. 3. High speed crash hazard.

17 Tire Valve problem of the 2008 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 05/11/2012

Approximately three years after purchase, I got a flat tire driving on 1-290 in central massachusetts. When I looked at the issue, it was clear that the tire sensor valve had gone into the tire. I replaced said tire, and since then I have the issue three more times on all four tires total. The second and third time were two consecutive days April 2013 and the fourth one today 12/17/13. The sensors seemed to be rotting out and the stem ends up corroding. I have spent at least 1,000 in the last year and a half fixing this issue and it is very infuriating to say the least. It seems that looking online this is an issue which many have had, yet there has been no recall.

18 Tire Valve problem of the 2008 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 03/21/2012

I was driving down the interstate when all the sudden the pressure sensor light went off for no apparent reason at all. I had assumed that is was just some kind of electronic malfunction and continued to drive for a bit until I noticed the tell-tale signs of a flat tire. The was odd since I had recently purchased new tires with less than 1000 miles on then and the was no debris in the roadway that would account for the rapid deflation. When I pulled over the tire valve and was gone and there was a hole in the interior sidewall. When I brought the car into the tire place he pulled the tire off to try to find the sensor to no avail. He said in his 35 years of experience he had never seen anything like this. On closer inspection we noticed a crack in another one of the valve stems. The dealer claims this is due to environmental conditions and not due to component manufacturing, but it seems odd that it would happen to multiple valves likes that. As an addendum, the only other time I have to call road side assistance was when I random got a flat tire and when I tried to refill the tire the valve pushed in. I took it too the dealership where they promptly replaced the valve and sensor without charge. I am glad I had new tires with run flat technology. It this had happened with the old tires I can only imagine how much worse the situation could have been.

19 Tire Valve problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 03/16/2012

While checking and inflating a customer's tires the valve stem broke causing the tire to completely deflate.

20 Tire Valve problem of the 2009 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 06/19/2011

The contact owns a 2009 Mazda Mazda 3. While the vehicle was parked the contact noticed the pressure sensor light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technicians stated the valve stems on all four wheels had corroded and the front and rear driver and passenger side valve stems needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and stated because the corrosion was due to salt on the road the contact would be responsible for repairs. The approximate failure mileage was 36,110.

21 Tire Valve problem of the 2007 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

Low tire pressure light came on. Found valve stem cracked and leaking air from its side. Has happened to two different valve stems. Southern car never exposed to salt. Valve stems look new. Tire store charges over $200 to replace each one.
