My 2007 Mazda5 power steering stopped worked abruptly while turning on a major highway. The sudden change in steering nearly caused an accident. I checked the odb reader for codes but none were present. Then it happened again the next day in a similar situation, the power steering shut off but this time we were able to see the dash light for the power steering failure come on. It kicked back in a minute later. Again no codes in the scanner. Upon researching how to fix this issue my search revealed that 2007-2009 Mazda 5s have a recall for this exact critical failure. My next step was to call the local dealership to schedule a fix, however they told me that our specific vehicle (according to the VIN) was not under that recall, regardless of the vehicle doing precisely what was recalled. Please review the recall if you can, this is likely affecting more vehicles than Mazda is admitting to and is extremely dangerous.

The car became hard to steer, and I noticed the power steering light was on. It is a safety risk due to increased difficulty steering car and a risk for myself and other drivers on the road. This just occurred today and has not been investigated by an other parties. No warning or incidents prior to steering becoming difficult.
The contact owns a 2007 Mazda Mazda5. The contact stated while driving at approximately 30 mph and approaching a traffic light, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. The contact drove to his residence however, it was difficult to turn the steering wheel. The contact stated that the abs and power steering warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who was not able to determine the cause of the failure. The contact stated that the dealer was contacted and confirmed that the VIN was not included in a recall. The contact researched the failure online and found NHTSA campaign number: 10v374000 (steering). The manufacturer was not notified of the recall. The approximate failure mileage was 138,000.
Mazda 5 power steering system fails intermittently. The power steering light comes on and steering becomes extremely difficult to steer. Occasionally, the check engine comes on as well and the engine stalls making the situation even more dangerous. The Mazda 5 is available for inspection upon request. My daughters life was put at risk when the steering fails intermittently potentially causing damage to the car, other vehicles, and injury or death of pedestrians. The car has not been repaired or inspected at this point. There is no warning before the power steering fails. The power steering indicator light is illuminated and occasionally also the check engine light when the power steering failure causes the engine to stall as well. The first occurrence of the issue was January 17, 2022, while my daughter was driving the vehicle. The vehicle recall history shows the power steering had been repaired previously for the same issue.
This model of Mazda steering wheel stop rotating mostly on highway. At time it become too stiff to ove for 5 to 10 minutes and then it comes back on it is worrying me as it may cause an unvoidable crash.

Loss of power steering at random times. Srs light comes on and power steering locks up while driving. You have to pull over and turn the car off and restart it for it to work again. It's very scary not knowing when this will randomly happen as your driving down the road. It could cause an accident. I see where older models have been recalled for steering but not newer ones.

Sudden power steering loss while driving on an entry ramp of a highway, accompanied by illumination of multiple lights on the dashboard. Steering loss occurred while vehicle steering wheel was turned and vehicle was in motion and preparing to merge onto highway. Steering wheel suddenly and violently jerked from my hands, causing the vehicle to steer in the direction off the road. Dash lights (including power steering) flashed intermittently, however would remain constantly on when steering was pulled from center position. Power steering loss was spontaneous, intermittent, and without warning. Vehicle did not record any diagnostic fault codes while lights were displayed. Symptoms vehicle displayed coincide with "recall summary" found documented on NHTSA recall 10v374000 for the 2007 Mazda5. Incident occurred briefly at low speeds while parking on 08/23/2019 and resolved after vehicle was turned off and restarted. Incident reoccurred while merging onto highway at high rate of speed as described above on 08/25/2019. While incident occurs and lights illuminated on dashboard, the steering wheel motion is very restricted and the wheel automatically forces itself back to the center (neutral) position. The lights on the dashboard will remain constantly illuminated with any movement of the steering wheel away from the center/neutral position. The radio also has hello displayed, as if the vehicle was just started, even though the vehicle is in motion and was never turned off.
While driving my steering wheel got really harden almost impossible to turn. I nearly crash. I was lucky I was going slow. This has happened in more than 1 ocassion. I was driving in city.

Intermittent loss of power while driving. Loss of steering capability as well. The loss is sudden and causes the driver to lose control of the vehicle as steering becomes extremely difficult. This is dangerous. I almost ran off the road once and hit a median on another occasion. Its like a time bomb, you never know when you will lose the ability to steer the car. Dash lights all light up as well and sometimes power is restored but the ability to steer the car is not. Car is outside of the recall yet still has the same problem as the recall issue and Mazda claims no responsibility for the issue. Additional vehicles need to be added to the recall list as there are more vehicles affected outside of the VIN's included in the recall. Since. According to Mazda, they comply with NHTSA when issuing recalls, more vehicles need to be included as there is a multitude of Mazda 5 owners experiencing the exact same issue as the recall vehicles.
Tl the contact owns a 2009 Mazda 5. While driving 55 mph, the power steering malfunctioned and the steering veered to the left. The failure almost caused a crash. In addition, the entire instrument panel illuminated. The contact had to exert excessive force to turn the steering wheel and pull the vehicle off the road. When the vehicle was turned off and restarted, the power steering returned to normal and the contact was able to drive home. The manufacturer and the dealer were not notified. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 86,000.
I bought 4 kumho tires sized 205 50r17 for this car in September of 2015. In August of 2017, at about 25000 miles on the tires, one of them developed what we later learned was a belt separation. The symptoms were a severe vibration, and severe pull. We replaced two of the tires. 10 months later the car developed exactly the same symptoms, and it was discovered that another of the tires had a belt separation. I replaced all 4 tires with another brand. I called kumho to report the issue, as they clearly had a bad run of tires for me to have to out of one set. The person answering the phone (warranty department) insisted that 'belt separations are common', that the recent recall was a "voluntary recall because the engineers just wanted to see the tires'. I asked to speak to someone in their safety or engineering departments. She said "we don't have anyone like that".
Tl the contact owns a 2008 Mazda 5. While driving various speeds, the power steering seized and the power steering assist fault indicator illuminated. The failure occurred without warning. The dealer was not made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was notified. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 141,000.
Front sway bar bushings were replaced no less than 3 times by the dealer under warranty. The symptom is a clunking or thumping noise on rough or washboarded roads. The sway bar is . 908 inches in diameter and the wall thickness of the bushings is approximately . 25 inches. They are rubber from Mazda and apparently, changing them every 20k mi or so are not adequate for the application. Seems that there is a known issue by Mazda for this but one of the busining that was just removed 2/3/18 was torn nearly in half across between the sway bar and the cross member. If these were ignored and the bushings completely fell out of the brackets ther would be enough movement of the sway bar to cause interference in steering the vehicle due to the fully articulated design of the sway bar endlinks. This has the potential to be a deadly issue.

The contact owned a 2012 Mazda 5. While making a turn at approximately 53 mph, the contact lost control of the steering wheel. The vehicle rolled over three times and crashed into a ditch. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. The contact sustained a concussion and minor neck, back, and shoulder injuries that required medical attention. The vehicle was towed and destroyed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 64,666.
I called Mazda's 1 800-222-5500 twice about the power steering issue on my car even after providing the info from the NHTSA site: report receipt date: Aug 12, 2010 NHTSA campaign number: 10v374000 component(s): steering but they insisted that based on the car's VIN, no recall is effective (???) I'm concerned and can't drive my car after an incident when the steering wheel suddenly stiffened. More so since roads are icy this time of year. If the manufacturer is liable, I would rather have them shoulder the expense for the fix. Would appreciate a fast reaction into this issue.
Tl-the contact owns a 2007 Mazda Mazda5. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 5 mph, the steering wheel seized as the power steering warning indicator illuminated for three second. The power steering warning indicator turned off and the steering resumed. The vehicle was not take to a dealer or diagnosed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 10v374000 (steering). The failure mileage was approximately 110,000. Sg.
An issue occurs with the power steering assist, the power steering malfunction warning light will illuminate, and the car will require more physical effort to steer. This happens in very unsafe conditions while driving. I then turn the car off and I am able to steer again for about 2-3 min before this happens again. I called Mazda and they are saying my VIN is not part of the recall #60108 when clearly this is the same problem that the Mazdas were having with 2007/08 models. I've called Mazda and they will not honor this recall.

This is what is going on with my car. I almost had an accident because of the power steering assist is suddenly lost by reducing my ability to steer the vehicle. Mazda said there was no recall on my car so they cant help me. Mazda is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 Mazda3 and Mazda5 vehicles manufactured from April 2, 2007 through November 30, 2008. These vehicles may have a condition in which a sudden loss of power steering assist could occur at any time while driving the vehicle. Consequence: power steering assist is suddenly lost reducing the driver's ability to steer the vehicle as typically expected, and increasing the risk of a crash.
2006 Mazda 5 steering wheel got struck 4 times in last 2 months for fraction of seconds while making either left or right turn driving at 10-15 mph (one time at after I stopped at stop sign). The steering wheel got so hard I could not turn it and then all of sudden I was able to turn. Took it to dealer but they said their diagnostic results did not find any issues and they were not able to reproduce the problem.
Power steering leak.
Power steering went out driving about 25 mph downhill. Mechanic could not find fault. Driving up a winding cayon road, power steering went out, causing one to use force to turn vehicle. No recalls on the 2006 Mazda5, however recalls on the 2007. This is a known problem by Mazda yet they did not issue a recall. No warranty due to being over 50k miles.
The contact owns a 2008 Mazda Mazda5. The contact stated that all four tires were wearing excessively due to the factory specifications of the alignment. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and could not provide any assistance to the contact. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
I had 3,000 miles on my 2012 Mazda 5 when I first complained to a Mazda dealer that my car would wobble when going forward into a right turn and in reverse when making a left turn. 'something' would always correct the problem for a while when I complained during multiple oil changes. Recently at 25,000 miles a dealer finally told me my rotors were out of round so they were going to ground them down to make them straight. I requested a replacement but they said no. I would not expect nor have I ever seen rotors wear down before years of service. There is now a perception of skidding for a second when I go around a corner that I have felt twice since the rotors were supposedly made even. The car is under warranty. Has anyone else had this problem? is this a safety issue? I feel unsafe as the car has always had a balance problem. The dealer I bought the car from said he doesn't feel or see a problem and refuses to replace the rotors even though the problem has been there since I bought the car. Is there anything I need to worry about or do?.
While driving my Mazda 5, while at a stop the car idles regular for about a min then it begins to loose power and boggle down until the engine shuts down completely. The power steering indicator comes on. Fo this not to happen I need to keep my foot on the gas peddle. According to the dealer my VIN number does not qualify for the recall that was issued on the power steering issue. I believe that my 2007 Mazda 5 also has the same problem, stated on the recall for the power steering issue. The dealer refuses to consider my case under the recal.

At about 0630hrs, 02-03-11, while operating a 2009 Mazda, Mazda5 touring. The weather was clear and the roadway, okeechobee blvd. , royal palm beach, palm beach county, florida, was dry, straight and level and of macadam construction. Traffic conditions were light to moderate. The portion of the roadway being driven upon was of four (4) lanes with a center median of concrete curbing and soil/landscaping with grass and shrubs and trees and there are left/right turn lanes in addition to the through roadway. Okeechobee blvd. Runs east and west and the area in which the incident occurred is a residential area. While driving eastbound on okeechobee blvd. In the inside lane of traffic at a speed of about 35 (thirtyfive) mph and approaching the intersection of crestwood blvd. , the car suddenly began to drift to the left, without any input from the driver, and began entering into the left turn lane of okeechobee blvd, and all attempts to regain directional control of the car were thwarted by the sudden and apparent total loss of steering control, as the effort to turn or even move the steering wheel caused no change in direction and was beyond the physical strength of the driver, a 54 yoa, white female in good health and strength. As the car continued travelling further left into the intersection and with the application of braking, the right front wheel and right front lower bumper and chassis struck the curbing, travelling about 5 (five) feet before the car came to a halt in the westbound inside left turn lane of okeechobee blvd. At the crestwood blvd. Intersection. The vehicle suffered a shattered oilpan/lower crankcase and other major engine damage as well as damage to the right front suspension components, swingarm and wheel/tire along with the destruction of the front plastic bumper cover and lower plastic pans. The driver suffered minor bumps/bruising and musculo/skeletal pain to the arms, shoulders and neck.
2007 Mazda5 excessive tire wear and alignment/steering issues @ 27k miles. Have had approx. 10 alignments including a subframe alignment with no success. Have been forced to replace all tires twice due to tire wire on inner edges. Car steers to the right requiring steering wheel to held 2 degrees to the left while operating at all speeds. If steering wheel is released car will drift and then steer itself to the right. The tire wear results in cords showing on inner edge of tires before outer edge have any noticeable wear. Extremely unsafe vehicle due to possible tire failure 48,000 mile earlier than normal repair time.
