I was about to parallel park in reverse and the power steering died. A light showed up on the dashboard indicating the same. We were driving from reagan airport to kensington, maryland. While changing lanes on I-495, the power steering gave out on our Mazda5 with 39k miles on it. We were able to drive home with great effort. We took the car to the Mazda dealership and they know about this problem, that it is typical for Mazda5s.

39 Steering problem of the 2008 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 03/25/2010

I was sitting in very slow moving traffic on a surface street, traveled 1/4 mile in approximately a 45 minute time span. As I turned right on to a new street I noticed the steering became very difficult. I immediately took the vehicle to the parking lot to my left. It took great strength to turn the wheel to make the left hand turn. I stopped the car, checked the power steering fluid. It was at proper level. I restarted the vehicle and still no power steering. After sitting for approcimately 15 minutes. I restarted the vehicle again and the power steering had returned. I had the car towed to the dealership. I am reading several reports of similar instances of this occurring in the same make and model of vehicle under similar cirumstances.

Parked into parking space, when I put it in reverse to back up and drive away the power steering suddenly turned off and an orange caution light turned on my dash board, the power steering did not work during the drive home. After some research it seems that this a recurring problem with the Mazda 5.

41 Steering problem of the 2008 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 05/15/2009

Power steering goes out sporadically. There have been three occasions so far in the past year that the power steering has went out on my Mazda 5. Twice I was able to stop the car wait ten seconds and restart the car and it reset. Once it took two hours of sitting off before it reset itself.

42 Steering problem of the 2009 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 05/05/2009

Driving 20-309 mph on the 495 beltway during rush hour on Wednesday, may 5th around 4 pm when the steering wheel of my new 2009 Mazda 5 begins to lock. The power-steering wheel lock signal turns on and had to slowly get off the beltway. We had to turn off the car and turn it back on. Thankfully we were not injured. We do not understand why the steering wheel locked and wondering if there were other complaints out there.

43 Steering problem of the 2007 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 05/01/2009

Stopped in traffic at traffic signal. Attempted to change lanes and make turn when the power steering stopped working while wheels were turned in the direction of the turn. I was able to manually turn the steering wheel and make the turn. Dashboard indicator light was on indicating a problem with power steering. Drove to safe area and checked under hood. Fluid level was ok. Belt was turning. Power steering still not working. Turned vehicle off and restarted. Power steering was operational and dash light was off. Went to dealer who queried the system but did not find and 'codes' for the problem. This could have been a problem if my wife or children were driving and did not have the strength to correct the problem and straighten out the wheels at very low speed.

45 Steering problem of the 2006 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 03/30/2009

I have a 2006 Mazda 5 that has an engineering fault in the suspension/steering system. This defect leads to intense uneven wear in tires, which leads to a hazardous situation on the road. The dealers mask the problems by overinflating the tires (even more dangerous) and Mazda north America refuses to acknowledge the problem. There are hundreds of people from uk canada and USA that I've communicated with and they have the same experiences with their Mazda 5. The original toyo tires failed in the first year, a second set of tires provided by Mazda failed after the first 20000 miles and even the most expensive high performance tires from goodyear can not provide more than 2 years or 20000 miles of usage. I have gone to multiple dealers and shops, they all say the alignment and balance are ok but no one can improve the tire safety situation. I use this car to drive to work and back every day and to transport my children to school and their activities, about 12000 miles / year and I am afraid that something bad might happen. I do not use the car for commercial activities and I am not an aggressive driver. The constant replacement of tires and the expense incurred did not put me in a safer position. Only addressing the source of the problems can make this vehicle safer for me, my kids and everyone else on the road. I appreciate your time and diligence in solving this problem!.

46 Steering problem of the 2007 Mazda MAZDA5

Failure Date: 09/01/2007

The contact owns a 2007 Mazda 5. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the vehicle began to pull to the right and was difficult to control. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the wheel was aligned; the failure continued. The vehicle had been aligned ten time and the subframe was also aligned; the failure continued. The problem was causing wear on the tires every 12,000 miles. The contact called the manufacturer who advised him to take the vehicle to the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 100. Updated 02/10/11 the dealer informed the consumer that the tire wear was causing the vehicle to drift. The tires were replaced, but the vehcile continued to pull hard to the right. Updated 02/22/11.
