Mazda incomplete recall 28181; NHTSA recall 18v-631; I had my vehicle inspected as required and was told due to rust/corrosion/perforations the front cross member needs to be replaced. Informed no parts available and Mazda has given no info on when parts may be available; dealers have no info at all on timing for repairs; cannot get thru to Mazda for more info and Mazda does not even list this on their site as a recall; this is a dangerous condition and afraid to drive this car.

While driving to work on 290 in the morning traffic doing speeds around (30-50mph) the steering wheel began progressively rotating counter-clockwise with the vehicle pulling drastically to the right. The dynamic stability control turned off as if the vehicle was out of control and the vehicle acted as if it were on icy/slick surfaces no longer providing support to the driver. The steering/braking system began to struggle nearly causing an accident on the expressway causing a fishtail with the abs attempting to engage. At this point the steering wheel was registering straight’ with the steering wheel turned approximately 90 degrees left. thankfully I was able to exit the expressway and pull into a just tires shop, who informed me the front subframe has rusted completely thru and even twisted due to the corrosion. Now my 2011 Mazda6 is not drivable and hopefully NHTSA will force Mazda to do a recall for subframes before someone is killed in an accident.

While applying the brakes at approximately 30mph, there was sharp jolt, and the steering wheel jerked all the way to the right. The low-traction indicator light came on and the car was not able to be safely steered. Upon visual inspection, the front right tire was turned outward, while the front left remained straight. A mechanic confirmed that the issue was caused by a fully corroded sub-frame which had cracked in half.
The passenger side front vehicle frame has rusted completely through where the steering members attach. Found this when checking the brakes. Appears dangerous!.

The car is only 8 years old and the sub frame has completely rusted out, deeming the car unfit to drive. This was only caught as I took the car in for estimate on brakes. I have 2 young children who ride in this car daily, so luckily no accident. I've noticed several complaints regarding this on the 2009 and 2010 models. Although I haven't been in accident (yet), I'm now forced to pay $2000 in repairs, or just replace the vehicle.
Driving to work on highway 44 when I noticed the handling was really bad. Had to come to a quick stop and applied brake pressure when rhw xar suddenly swerves to the right. Upon getting the car under control I had to run thw sterring wheel 3/4 to the left to keep the car going straight. Made it to work by driving slow and conitinuing steering left. Called a tow truck to have it towed to a shop. My mechanic replaced a wheel bearing and took it for a drive. He lost complete control of thw car twice; took it back to the shop and discovered the subframe completely rusted out and was the cause of the problem.

I was driving about 45 mph on rochester rd in traffic when I had to pull to the right and brake for and ambulance heading my way, I heard something break in the front end and upon trying to resume my position in my lane my car would not steer and in order to keep my wheels straight I had to turn my steering wheel to the car left. I thought I had a tire going down so I pulled over to inspect my tires and found nothing so I got back in my car and made a turn back on the road and I knew right away something was terribly wrong as it felt like I was on a sheet of ice. I pulled over and called for a tow truck. Upon inspection at my repair shop they found my subframe was rusted out.
My son was driving the car approximately 40mph on a state route in a rural area and experienced a sudden loss of steering control and sharp pull to the right when he was trying to brake. This nearly caused him to hit a truck. When he regained control he noticed the steering wheel was not aligned while going straight and the car continued to pull to the right. When he managed to make it home we jacked it up and removed the right front tire. I noticed that the cross member on the right side was completely rusted through. This was the only noticibly large area of rust on the car. The car is now undriveable.
While driving car, felt clunk and car kept pulling to right and hard to control steering. When turn wheel, loud clunking felt and hard to control car. Car was on highway just before exiting to city street. Took to independent mechanic who said subframe completely rusted and affected steering and wheels would not let anyone drive car and said car is undriveable. Car towed to Mazda dealer where it sits today. I was driving my 3 brothers in the car when this occurred. Luckily there was no accident.
Driving on highway, I had to brake and realized I had to struggle to steer the vehicle properly. I heard a loud clunk when releasing clutch when I had to use it. My steering wheel was out of alignment. When I brought in for service they said the entire frame and underside of the body had rusted out. I do not have pictures yet.

Was driving vehicle at 45 mile per hour. Suddenly noticed steering wheel was off center. I did not hit a pothole or any other obstructions on the road. Steering became very loose and vehicle hard to steer. When braking the vehicle started to make squealing sound and pulled to one side. Suspension became very harsh even on good surface road. . This is a catastrophic failure with no warning. Fortunately was able to get vehicle to auto repair center without getting into accident. Auto repair facility examined vehicle and showed me that engine cradle - subframe had rusted thought and broke. This caused the engine to go off center which caused the braking, steering, and suspension issues. Auto repair facility told me the vehicle was not safe to drive and made me sign a waiver to release the vehicle.
On September 12, 2018 I took my 2010 Mazda 6i to a local Mazda dealership to get preventative maintenance done on the vehicle, replacing the drive belt. When the Mazda tech started the job, he discovered that the entire front sub-frame that holds the front end suspension, steering components, motor and transmission was rusted and rotted out with several holes and flaking metal. The tech was unable to perform the job as he stated he could not remove the sub-frame and keep it in tact. The tech reported that this created a hazardous and unsafe condition and that until repaired with a new or other-wise in-tact sub-frame the car would be unsafe to drive. Upon checking on-line I have discovered that this is quickly becoming a common problem with the Mazda 6 of this model year (2009 to 2019). The sub-frame should not be that rotted out in a 2010 vehicle with 101921 miles on it and no rust on the body.
Inspection agency found that the engine cradle was corroded to the point of near failure. Have been told that a replacement using a used chassis will cost over $1500. I have lived in new jersey/pennsylvania for all but 8 months I have owned this car since 2009. From reading about others with the same issue, it seems the engine cradles were not made to handle those winter conditions. Hopefully this will generate a recall since it seems like a common occurrence. I also had to have my front axle replaced about a year ago for a rusting issue that may have been due to the same material corrosion.
Tl the contact owns a 2010 Mazda 6. While driving approximately 30 mph, the steering wheel started to pull to the right. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that the passenger side subframe was severely corroded and flaky. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 200,00. The VIN was unavailable.
Steering became difficult. We thought it needed an alignment nut 2 days later the steering became difficult. This was driving on a residential street at approximately 30 mph. We took the car to a repair shop to discover the sub frame has rusted into two. $1700 minimum to repair with a used part.
As I was driving down the interstate my steering wheel rotated clockwise and was at an angle and my car continued to go straight down the road. It felt as if I were driving on ice and was very hard to control the vehicle. While making a turn my front tires began to squeal. It was very hard to turn. When braking the car shook dramatically. I took it to a local auto mechanic because I thought it was possibly something with the steering. The mechanic called back and was shocked to tell me the sub frame was completely rotten and had broken. It was hard for him to believe that a car that was only 8 years old would have that much corrosion on the frame. I purchased the car brand new and have had the car for the entire 8 years with no accidents at all.
Driving down the road and noticed my steering wheel started to not be aligned. I then noticed the steering response wasn't there like it usually was. I was on a highway and the car started steering as if it were a boat. A delay in the steering response was creating a dangerous driving experience. I brought it in to the dealership and they had told me that the part that holds everything together had completely rusted out. I could not take the car back with me as it was too unsafe to drive on the road. It's been 4 weeks now and still my car sits at the dealership. The car doesn't even have 90k on it and is in great condition other than that. Four weeks of no car and no word on anything about how it's going to get fixed has cost me money in rentals and also kept me from getting to all the jobs I need to get to. After doing some research on my own since I keep calling and they keep telling me they don't know what's going on with it, I'm noticing so many people with the same car having the same exact issue. This isn't a wear and tear issue like brakes or tires. This is a manufacturing and engineering issue that has failed. Any information on this would be great!.
Vehicle randomly shuts off on the highway with no known cause or warning light. Mazda service department could not fix. This has happened 3 times now. Vehicle was driving in summer weather, no rain, no unusual conditions.

While driving straight wheel is at 12:00 and 6:00 and car is going straight . . Found at dealership that rt. Front sub-frame rusted thru . . Car is no longer safe to drive and new frames are backordered even junkyards are out . . Had to rent and buy a new car.
Was driving on interstate at 70mph and applied breaks, heard a bang from area of passenger front side and lost control of the steering of the vehicle causing it swerve into the adjacent lane on my right. I narrowly avoided being hitting and being hit by other vehicles and was able get the car to the shoulder event without having proper control steering as the car would only steer to the right. Upon inspecting the vehicle it was discovered that the bang was the passenger side subframe cracking due to heavy deterioration from rust. The car is underivable. I contacted Mazda and discovered that the previous years of this model have a recall for this subframe deterioration issue for the same exact part #. I was also informed that the car cannot be fixed as because of the part # is not available and has/is on backorder for many months. This defect is a huge safety risk, in my case I am very lucky this did not result in fatal accident traveling at 70mph on interstate 80. I fear other might not be so lucky. The subframe recall most certainly needs to be expanded to at least 2011 and subsequent years that use this same subframe. Additionally, at minimum courtesy to it customers Mazda should be altering its customers to have their subframes inspected as this is a very dangerous situation with many vehicle owners un aware they are driving ticking time bombs with subframes that are deteriorating prematurely and can lose control of steering at any moment.
Corrosion related steering issues. The frame of the car has rusted out where the lower control arm on the front passenger side connects to the frame. While coming to a quick stop the abs kicked in and the car pulled to the right with a popping sound. The car would randomly pull to one side when driving resumed. Took the car in for new brakes and was informed that the frame has rusted out. Finding other like concerns I took the car to Mazda with no communication regarding the status of my vehicle. The car is 8 years old and should not have frame rust to the point of failure.
The contact owns a 2009 Mazda 6. While driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle started pulling to the right. In addition, the traction control and dynamic stability control off warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 148,500.
In August 6th, 2018, I was driving back from work with my 4y old son in quebec city at 50 km/h. When I want to stop at the red-light I sensed a significant loss of steering control to the right and I was completely shocked because I was just about to hit a cyclist. And my son was frustrated too. Luckily nothing bad happened. But from there I wasn't able to drive correctly, I held the steering wheel to 60 degrees to the left while going at 25 km/h to be able to drive straight and get back to my home. The following day I drove my car to the nearest garage, and to my surprise, the guy told me that the subframe at the right near to the wheel is completely corroded and the steering rack was separated from its mounts causing the steering loss. The garage owner told that he called Mazda to ask for a new subframe for me, but they told him that they don't have it in stock and they have already 5 more people with the same problem waiting for that. Knowing that I do rust check and treatment before every winter. I am very thankful to god that nothing bad happened while I was traveling with my family during our holidays. Mazda should recognize this as a serious and very dangerous defect since it is happening for a lot of people.
This car was bought used. After suspension inspection I found out that the front subframe is extremely rusty and immediate replacement is necessary. According to the body condition there were no any incidents which may affected the subframe condition. Further driving with this is dangerous.
While driving on the highway at about 55 mph I heard a loud noice and the car suddenly started to swerve, the steering became difficult. I was able to slow down and pull off the highway and to a parking lot. During the ride at a much slower speed around 20-25 very loud noises came from the right front of the car especially, when the the wheel was turned. The vehicle is not drivable and had to be towed. The sub frame rusted out and the lower control arm pushed the right front tire into the back of the wheel well.
When driving home from the gym, the vehicle suddenly became difficult to control and there was an excessive amount of play in the steering wheel. After inspecting, my husband believes the cause is due to frame corrosion at the steering rack mount which appears to have been reported by other 2009 2010 Mazda 6 owners. .
I was driving home from work, when I noticed that my steering was not working right. Every time I hit a bump in the road it became hard to control. To stay straight, my steering wheel had to be turn almost completely left. I figured I was just badly out of alignment. I took it to the shop to get my alignment done, and they told me the sub frame was rotted out. The car is only 8 years old and well maintained. He was not able to explain why it was rotted out, but the rest of the underneath looked good.
While driving on town roads and around a traffic circle a loud noise was heard from the right hand side of the vehicle. I attempted to pull into a nearby gas station but the vehicle would not steer to the left enough to enter the parking lot. I managed to pull into another lot a short distance down the street on the right hand side. I inspected the under side of the vehicle and discovered the front sub-frame had rusted through to the point of failure. This failure allowed the complete front left wheel/suspension assembly to move about freely under the car.
Subframe rust the front passenger subframe is severely rusted to the point that tmy local Mazda dealer (alden Mazda in fairhaven, MA) didnt want to perform routine maintenance due to their concerns over this very serious safety issue. They told me that the car is unsafe to drive at this point. I drive approximately 150 to 200 miles on most days and I'm very concerned for my safety. I purchased the car on February of 2018 with only 68,000 miles on it. As of July 30th 2018 it's at approximately 79,000 miles.
Bought 2009 Mazda 6 brand new. Car has 140,000 miles well maintained. I had to slam on my brakes to avoid a collision with a truck pulling a trailer. The truck was at a stop sign facing west, I had right of way driving north, truck driver pulled out in front of me turning left to go south. My speed aprox. 40mph to dead stop. . My vehicle never left the road or no impact with other vehicle. As I started to drive straight, I had to keep my steering 20-30 degrees to left because my car pulled hard to the right. I pulled over to check for flat tire. That was not the issue. I was able to turn around and proceed to a Mazda dealer aprox 2 miles south . I left the car there for Mazda to inspect. The service advisor called me and told me the front sub frame had split/cracked due to rust corrosion--"thats northeast ohio for you". Repair estimate $2000-$2500. Repairs are not done. Dealership has allowed to leave the vehicle in the parking lot for a short time. My car can not be driven. The dealership offered to work with me to "purchase another vehicle " .
Engine cradle/crossmember is severely deteriorated on the passenger side. Excessive rust and holes in the structure. My concern is a safety issue in driving the car and having it stay together.
Update to NHTSA id number: 11074904 on 7/8/18, the front crossmember engine cradle failed, which has resulted in the catastrophic failure of being able to steer the car. The car is now unsafe to operate and drive whatsoever. I have been waiting 4. 5 months for the manufacturer to provide the replacement oem part which I had scheduled the repair in the beginning of March 2018. The manufacturer has refused to sell the part to the mechanic, and the dealer said the price of the oem part has now doubled. This price gouging and inability to allow me to freely choose who to perform maintenance on my car is unacceptable and may result in the pursuit of legal action.
