Every time this Mazda Mpv gets a little wet it will not go over 40 mph. I have contacted the dealership with no return phone call or email. The coils allow moisture to get in which will cause the vehicle to think it is overheating and will not go no matter what you do. I was on the highway when this happened in jacksonville during rush hour and being stuck in the middle of no where because of a faulty coil that the dealership does not want to take responsibility for, is beyond frustrating. I have kids that have been in the vehicle other times when this has happened and we had to sit in the van or go to gas stations and wait until it was somewhat derivable again. I have read forum after forum and there seems to be a lot of people having this issue with their Mpv, ranging from 1993-2006 models. Something needs to be done with this before someone gets hurt.

On 2 separate occasions, engine coil on 2004 Mazda Mpv broke while driving in the rain and another occasion on a 2003 Mazda Mpv I also own an engine coil broke while driving in wet weather. Each time it caused the engine to shake violently. The service department at the dealership admitted to problems with the engine coils but reports no recall for them. The is a design flow that prevents the coils from dispersing moisture properly.
2003 Mazda Mpv lx with 35,000 miles ignition coil failure after driving through rainstorm in extremely rural area. I was driving alone and had to limp the vehicle 30 miles back to town at 25 mph. Only one place in town could fix it and it was an expensive repair. I have been told this is a common issue with the Mazda Mpv and if so, there should be a recall for the poorly designed coil.
We own a 2005 Mazda Mpv. Two years after purchasing the vehicle it started to shake and jerk as if it wanted to turn off, after taking it to the dealership it turns out the engine was misfiring due an ignition coil giving out. Nine months later it happens again. This time they replaced all 6 six ignition coils. Two years after replacing all six coils it happens again. This time they replaced the #3 coil. While at the dealership the service lady told us that this is a consistent problem with this vehicle and that we would have this problem with the coils for as long as we own the van. All three times that this has happened the car shakes and acts as if the engine wants to shut off. After vigorous research online we found out that we are not the only ones dealing with this problem. After complaining to Mazda via email all they had to say was since the car was under warranty and all the coils where fix that they would not be able to help us in the future once our extended warranty runs out.
My 2004 Mazda Mpv suffered the same problem as many other consumers. On two different occasions I had to replace all of the coils and plugs on my vehicle. The first instance was just after the warranty expired and involved one of the rear coils but the said I should replace all three rear coils. The second incident occurred two months later to the front coil and I replaced all of those - total cost $900. I complained to Mazda but they wouldn't do anything for me. This should be recalled and owners compensated.

Since new, hesitates between 40-50 mph, causing sudden loss of power, high rpms but no acceleration. Removing foot from gas van sometimes recovers. Has had transmission control module replaced as a result, then ignition coils were blamed and those were replaced one by one, sometimes more than once, then coolant temperature sensor went, now at 85,000 transmission went. Each event stranded my family by the side of the road and car had to be towed.
At 38,000 miles, the van started to have intermittent hesitations that randomly occurred. I needed to replace all ignition coils at a cost in excess of $600.
The engine coils have failed 4 times since we have owned the vehicle. Last night while traveling on the interstate in the rain, key words, in the rain it started again. I am sure at least one if not two coils went this time. Just had a coil and all the boots that are suppose to protect the coils and keep the moisture out replaced in February, 2012. It always happens when it rains. Mazda is well aware of the situation and has done nothing to fix this issue except to stop using this system and start making their cars differently. But what about the people who own the older models? this is a dangerous situation as I was on the highway, at night, and it was pouring down rain and the van starts slowing down and sputtering along, with traffic traveling behind me. This should be a recall issue as it is a known problem and it is because of a manufacturing defect not anything that owners can avoid.
2004 Mazda Mpv engine completely and suddenly dies when driving - usually when pressing the accelerator pedal as the engine is decelerating. Drove car to shoulder, placed in neutral to restart. Appears to be the idle control valve (madza forum sites report numerous similar events).
There is a sulfur smell coming from the engine into the passenger compartment, dealer said its the ethanol gas that is causing the problem and that it is seasonal; dealer said to try other gas; dealer has said they have received other complaints of this same smell and that at least one (pregnant) owner cannot drive her car without becoming sick.
