The ignition coils on my 2003 Mazda Mpv fails while I was driving. My van only has 27,000 miles on it. When I did more research, I found this is a very common problem for Mpv. This needs to be a recall!.
The contact owns a 2004 Mazda Mpv. While driving 65 mph on the interstate the vehicle automatically shut off on four occasions. The contact restarted the vehicle after each failure and brought the vehicle to two different Mazda dealers. Neither dealer could diagnose the cause of the failure. The contact stated that the failure was random and occurred every 1,000 miles. The current mileage is 60,700 and failure mileage was 57,500.

2004 Mazda Mpv - transmission issues and engine coil failures. Transmission has shift shock, where the vehicle slams into the next gear at 20 mph. The shock sends the vehicle dangerously forward. Mazda had two service bulletins for this defect which included replacing sensors and switches. Mazda also supplied a diagram to instruct drivers to "wiggle" the gear selector between gears. None of this solved the problems. Engine coils were replaced three times at 24,000 miles, 32,000 miles, and 35,000 miles. This caused the vehicle to stop running correctly while driving.
Driving uphill on I-70 at the speed limit (55) the car lost all power, the driver steered to the shoulder. The engine compartment began smoking. By the time the fire department arrived the Mazda Mpv ('97) was consumed in fire.

While driving on the freeway the van suddenly lost power to the wheels, even though the engine was still running. Had it towed to a Mazda dealer who reported that the thrust bearing in the crankshaft had broken. The entire engine had to be replaced.
