Mazda MPV owners have reported 21 problems related to engine exhaust system (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mazda MPV based on all problems reported for the MPV.
Vehicle has about 112, 500 miles when it had a catalytic converter failure. Cost to repair $1800. Service manager said this repair is tied to driving with the check engine light on due to engine coil failures. All engine coils had been replaced before 89000 miles. Since the coils were replaced earlier, no way to identify the nexus to the catalytic converter. There have been numerous "check engine" warnings and related repairs: O2 sensor, pcv hose, and O2 cannister have been replaced in addition to all 6 engine coils. There was no recall notice on any of these failures and there were other "check engine" warnings where no problem was found. I have driven several cars over 112000 miles and I have never had to replace a catalytic converter. Based on this experience, and the treatment at the Mazda dealer, I would not buy another Mazda product.

I purchesed an Mazda Mpv in 2007 from a chev delership who said it was in good working condition. It was a 2000 model. As soon as winter came the O2 sensor on the rear bank went out. Paid $400. 00 to the dealership to replace. It lasted only a short time. The dealsrship told me it should last 100. 000 miles, so they replaced it and only charged me another $400. 00. To date I have had the O2 sensor replaced a total of four times. The last two times it was at a Mazda dealership. They also told me it should last 100. 000 miles. But every time it get's below 40 deg f, it fails, or at least the warning light comes on. I have spent a total of $1,200. 00 in replaceing the sensor. I keep doing it because my wife uses it to drive our granddaughter to dance class and I don't want them to get stranded on the road way. I have allready lost my aunt's daughter to a road side killer and don't want it to happen once more.

Good morning . My muffler system sounds like an airplane. Please assist me with this problem as I might have recalls for this vehicle.
Loud tapping noise existed for several months, sounded like a valve tapping. Problem was a cracked exhaust manifold. Dealer found cracked manifold and a stripped attaching bolt. Both were replaced. Manufacturer subsequently repaid me for cost of parts. I paid labor.

- the contact owns a 2002 Mazda Mpv. The contact stated that the elbow fitting connected to the intake manifold developed a tear which caused a vacuum leak in the engine and made the brakes lose vacuum assist. The contact had the vehicle taken to the dealer where he found that there was a recall for this part that was good up to 70000 miles. The contact stated he was not notified of the recall.
An open seam in the consumer's 2000 Mazda Mpv's front exhaust manifold allowed exhaust fumes to enter the vehicle. The consumer's child had a severe asthma attack as a result of this failure.
Exhaust manifold started leaking causing the check engine light to turn on and a "ticking" sound after startup for the first few minutes. This occurred with 58k on the vehicle.

At any speed or driving conditions vehicle emits sulfur odor, ie rotten egg smell, into cabin. Smells like somebody farted.
My daughter, danielle grande, was burned on the leg by the tailpipe of my Mazda Mpv minivan. Her leg touched the tailpipe because it sticks out past the bottom edge of the back bumper. I called Mazda and reported the problem but they refused to fix it or take any action.
A strong chemical fume entered inside the vehicle. The dealer was unable to duplicate the problem.
There is a sulfur smell coming from the engine exhaust, dealer said to try different gas, and it should go away, I have tried several brands of gas and the smell is still there.
Rotten egg smell coming from exhaust system. Vehicle has 13,000 miles on and odor seems to be getting worse.
Oil burning smell was filling the cabin of the van whenever it was running. Brought the van in to have them find out what was happening, they put dye in the oil to track an oil leak which was leaking on the exhaust directly behind the engine. Returned a week later to find out they believed it was the timing cover and ordered parts to replace the gasket. Returned a week later and left van to be repaired. Two days later we picked the van up and drove home. The next day the smell was back. Called the dealership back and had to schedule another apointment (a week later) which they said they could not find any leak. There is fluid (possibly transmission fluid ) leaking on the other side of the engine. I have another apointment scheduled to return for other issues such as the dash lights flickering on and off when vehicle is cold, and a thumping noise in the front of vehicle. This van only has 14000 miles on it and I do not need it to catch on fire. . .
I bought this car for 6 months, the engine light on twice, didn't fix it first time, the advisor said the gas tank cap is not close tight enought. Couple of days later, the engine light is one again, this time they found control system incorrect flow, small leak, hose off of purge valve at air cleaner housing. Car pulls to left on highway and right on local street. Brought in 4 time, admit alignment on the 3rd time and fix it, but still pull. Brought in again the fourth time, said found no pulling problem. We complaint that the car occasionally jerk when press gas paddle, the jerk feeling simliar to the way the car got hit in behind. They found no code for it. The car beep, they can't find any code for it. There are many problem we found in the car, but they said they can't find the code. One advisor think that the car's pulling because the car is too high. Also, it happen 3 times since I bought the car that after I placed the gear to reverse, then place it back to drive, the car won't go but the engine run. To fix it, then I place the gear back to park and to drive, then the car back to normal run. I'm very regretful to have bought this car. It has so many problem and the dealear doesn't seem to want to fix the problem either. I'm, the consumer have to paid financially, and mentally for this car. It is a disaster.
The exhaust system released a bad odor. The dealer and manufacturer recommended the consumer change the type of gas which was being used, however the odor still existed.
Consumer noticed a "rotten egg" odor in cabin. Dealer has not been able to determine cause. The manufacturer sent consumer a letter stating that several models exhibit the odor. Consumer believes vehicle has an exhaust leak into cabin which includes carbon monoxide. Consumer has exhibited symptoms of breathing those particular fumes. Ph.
The transmission "bucks" when shifting out of first gear. This happens mainly after accelerating, letting your foot off the gas, and then re-accelerating. The car has been in several times for the same issue, and it continures to occur. The dealership does not consider this a warranty issue, though we have had the same problem with the car since we the 2nd week we owned the vehicle. It should be noted that there have been a number of transmission "updates" that the vehicle has gone through as part of service. In addition there is a sulfur smell emitted by the exhaust system. We were told to change to "good gas" which we did and we continue to have the smell. We were then told that Mazda would not look at this problem again until the vehicle had 10k miles on.
Rust caused complete replacement of exhaust sytem after 22,400 miles (3 years). Both dealership where purchased and cole muffler (specialist) state that muffler and exhaust pipes should not rust or deteriorate in this time frame. After muffler separated from exhaust pipe, it remained attached to undercarriage of Mpv minivan, and created a hazard by contacting the tire and brakle cables while the car was being operated.
