Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2002 Mazda Tribute

Failure Date: 12/13/2010
I have a 2002 Mazda Tribute with a flashing air bag light. It has been diagnosed as a defective seat belt pretensioner. I called the local dealer and they will charge me for the repair. I called Mazda USA ( case # [xxx])and they will not help. This seems as though it is a common problem with these vehicles. There are 2 safety issues 1) the seatbelt is defective and 2)the air bag may not deploy in the event of a collision. Is NHTSA going to address this safety issue and can you help me get this resolved. Thank you

Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2003 Mazda Tribute

Failure Date: 07/15/2009
Starting in 7/2009 my 2003 Mazda Tribute's air bag light came on. Repairs included replacing the connector under the pass seat. Since then the light has come on 5 times and each time a connector kit was needed for repairs. Eventually the light burned out and cost over $200. 00 for repairs. I called Mazda and complained. I also found numerous other owners complaining of the same problem on the internet. While the light is on or burned out according to mechanics I have talked to the air bag will not deploy in the event of a accident.
Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2003 Mazda Tribute

Failure Date: 03/03/2009
Mazda Tribute, 2003. Airbag light stay illuminated. Mazda repaired it 5 times and still it is lit. Have been told by the dealer that the airbag will not deploy should I be in an accident. I bought the car new, it has not been in an accident and up to now it was covered by warranty. Now they want me to pay $400 to fix something they can't fix anyway. I feel a defect trend exists with their airbags from all that I've read. If cars are mandated by the government to have functioning airbags then why is Mazda not being held accountable for the serious safety defects in their airbag system?.

The contact owns a 2003 Mazda Tribute. The contact received recall notice # 07v157000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock:control unit/module). He took the vehicle to the dealer to inspect the air bags because the indicator light continued to illuminate on the instrument panel. He believes this failure is similar to the failure stated in the recall. The Mazda dealer will not do anything because the manufacturer must issue the recall. Mazda will not issue a recall unless they are pressured to do so by NHTSA. The contact has to pay $375 for the air bag indicator light. The mechanic replaced the wiring harness. When the light was illuminated, the air bags would not deploy due to the failed connection. The engine size was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 50,000.

Further, the car radio came loose from its mountings, and whipped around on its antenna cable. Failure Date: 05/09/2005
May 9,2006 involved in front end collision when a vehicle pulled out in front of me with approx. 3 feet notice, hit vehicle in drivers side door with the complete front end of my vehicle at 35 mph. Vehicle damaged to the point of breaking air conditioning compressor. I was wearing my seat belt and jerked forward on impact and air bag states that it deployed but it never deployed. I am now currently seeing physicians and specialist for neurosurgery. My vehicle is still in the repair shop at this time, then it will have to be sent back to the Mazda dealer to find out why the airbag did not deploy and be fixed. At this time it has not been fixed or even determined why it did not deploy. If it did not deploy at 35 mph crash I am concerned to even drive it again. This was my first ever accident in 25 years of driving and I do not want another, but I am very concerned about a defect since I am being told by all the experts that it should have.

There is a well documented and common problem on 2002 Mazda Tributes where the air bag failure light comes on. Several people have documented this problem and also indicated that their air bags failed to deploy in serious accidents. My air bag failure light comes on intermittently. The Mazda dealership indicated that they are aware of the problem. Amazingly, no safety recall notification has been issued for this problem, although I thought it would surely be issued after all these years and reported problems. Here is just one url with some of the documented problems. . Read more...

Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2001 Mazda Tribute
27
Failure Date: 01/04/2002
On the above mentioned date, this vehicle was involved in a frontal collision. No serious injuries resulted although the driver of this vehicle was treated and released for bruising in the chest area. Both driver and passenger were wearing seat belts. Even though the damage was $12,800, entirely to the front end of the vehicle, neither air bag deployed. I can supply photos and damage estimate report if needed. I am very happy that no serious injuries resulted, but I am not comfortable that vthis system is safe or operable. If the damage almost resulted in a total loss, all in the front end, and the airbags did not deploy, I am not sure that they are on the vehicle, or are operable.
