Failure Date: 12/03/2016
Vehicle with odometer ~102500 miles lost all power climbing a bridge at highway speed causing following traffic to stop abruptly. Engine re-started but runs rough due to misfire, accelerates poorly. Diagnosed by Mazda dealer as pcm failure. Estimated replacement cost = $2600 usd which makes this failure a total loss of this vehicle. This is a widely known and experienced issue among 2001 - 2006 Mazda Tributes for this Ford manufactured engine. Side note, class action suit filed against Ford motor company for same issues with 5. 1l engines.

Mazda recall # 1904d. Mazda has a recall for units built from April 17, 200 through September 11, 2002. My unit was built in 2004 but has the exact same problems as the vehicles in this recall. No one at Mazda can ( or won't ) tell me the reason that units in later dates such as mine are not in this recall even tho it does what the recall was suppose to fix and will not fix mine with-out a charge. The unit die when coming up to a stop sign or slowing down. This has happened repeatedly to my daughter who drives this car to the point where she is afraid to drive it. She has been almost rear-ended repeated times. Here is what the recall says. Recall summary: on certain sport utility vehicles equipped with 3. 0l v6 duratec engines , during deceleration, the engine can stall. Hazard: should the engine stall, a vehicle crash could occur. Remedy: dealers will reprogram the power control module (pcm) with the appropriate calibration. The recall began on may 3, 2004. Owners should contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500. Additional info: Mazda recall no. 1904d. Also, customers can contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

On June 25, 2013 @ 11:00am I called Mazda corporation (reference call number: 148295420) about recalls associated with my Mazda Tribute 2003 and was told that the recalls were not assigned to the VIN number of my vehicle. The Mazda representative stated that only the seat beat adjustment has been assigned to my vehicle and that I do not qualify for the recall. Mazda will not honor the recall. I bought the Tribute in 2010 from a dealership; thus, was not aware of the recalls. I have been having a lot of problems with the vehicle and have spent a lot of money trying to fix it. I have a 13 and 14 year old girls and am a single parent. According to the recall, the vehicle is not safe. I cannot afford right now to purchase another vehicle. I am only asking Mazda to honor the recalls. Please see the recall notice below from Mazda: 2003 Mazda Tribute recall item affected: power train:automatic transmission:control module (tcm, pcm) date announced: 4/14/2004 description of recall: on certain sport utility vehicles equipped with 3. 0l v6 duratec engines , during deceleration, the engine can stall. Action needed to fix dealers will reprogram the power control module (pcm) with the appropriate calibration. The recall began on may 3, 2004. Owners should contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500.

Failure Date: 03/28/2008
The contact owns a 2003 Mazda Tribute. The contact stated that when driving uphill or approaching a stop sign, the vehicle would stall. The vehicle had been to the dealer several times; however, the failure could not be duplicated. The dealer replaced the battery but to no avail. The contact was able to locate a recall, in which she believed to be directly related to the failure (NHTSA campaign id number 04v175000: power train: automatic transmission: control module tcm, pcm), however her VIN was not included. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage 82,000. Updated 11/03/10
the consumer also stated the vehicle would stall while backing up, and when it stalled, it couldn't be restarted. Updated 11/04/jb.

2 complaints: I took the car to a Mazda dealer 5 times starting back in 2003. 3 times for recalls ,and on each occasion had brought to the attention of the service representative e that the rpms would just all of a sudden go up rapidly, and the only why to stop it was shut it off. Of course this was always while waiting at lights when I would first start the car in the morning but now was at least one week. They put it on the computer back when it first started and said it was the pcm modular. T was also replaced along with the first recall . The car was okay for about 6 months and then started doing it again the same thing, the rpms rapidly came up- this time was already a recall so they fixed it again with another new pcm, but once again it did the same thing after about 8 months. I took it back again with another recall on a different matter, seat belt assembled, and told them the same thing was happening. By this time the warranty was out but because it had been in before for this they were able to get the Mazda to cover the part again, $1200. The problem started again and I could not afford to replace this parts again. I didn't think it was diagnosed correctly from the beginning. Now it stalled without warning while I was driving the steering and everything locked because of loss of power this happened on a regular bases. . I have held off on complaining, but this has gotten out of control. I thought maybe I just got a lemon, then I read the other compalints of the same things. I am a single mom and need this fixed for good. I didn't blame the dealer for the car troubles I blamed Mazda for a poorly made SUV. I have low mileag eon the car, but I hate driving it for fear of what will happen next.

On 8-25-2006 my Tribute was towed to star Mazda of glendale. The pcm was recalled and needed to be repaired, but the battery and alternator where ruined. Roughly two weeks prior to today, these two items had been replaced at a cost of $900. These repairs where made by my mechanic without my authorization, while I was attempting to verify the warranty on the Tribute. Once the vehicle arrived at star Mazda, I was told I needed to authorize an eighty five dollar examination fee because the battery was now dead. An explanation indicated that this fee was applied because the battery was not a Mazda battery and had not been installed by a Mazda mechanic. An employee then proceeded to tell me that although my vehicle was under warranty, I was going to be charged $1,100 to replace both the battery and the alternator. On top of that I was told that the pcm would not be repaired until the non-Mazda products were removed and replaced. Following that last bit of news, I was informed that I was not entitled to a rental. I am outraged over the fact that I was never notified by west covina Mazda of these recalls! they are clearly serious defects and could have resulted in a collision. It is my opinion that the faulty pcm destroyed a brand new alternator and battery in less than two weeks.

The vehicle shut off (engine stopped) when coasting downhill toward construction barrels. Was able to avoid barrels by turning into unoccupied turn lane. Power steering had gone out. Power brakes had gone out. Have owned the car for three weeks. Occurred once. Noticed that a recall (campaign id # 04v175000) that required reprogramming of the pcm module, and the symptoms of which exactly described this problem, existed for this vehicle model year. Made an appointment with dealer to check the car the following day. The dealer told me that there were no open recalls on my vehicle so I decided to pay for a diagnostic test. The test uncovered that the pcm module did need the reprogramming which the dealer did, but they also told me that the car needed additional parts to completely resolve the problem which I had to pay for. From what I can tell the range of my vehicle id does fall within the range of VIN numbers affected by this recall and the assembly date(12/00) also falls within the date range for this recall. I do not understand why the dealer does not see this as a vehicle that should have an 'open recall' and why the entire solution to the problem was not taken care of to remedy this. When the vehicle shuts off the driver has no control and this is an extreme safety issue.

I own a 2001 Mazda Tribute. The vehicle stalls unpredictably. The Mazda dealer and Mazda corporate are suggesting that the two power train control modules (the original) and the replacement modules are causing the vehicle to stall. If this is correct, then there must be some inherent defect with these pcms that must be investigated.

1). Three recalls on my vehicle: 1st - power train control module re-calibration recall 1904d. 2nd - b4000 dpfe sensor warranty extension program special service program (ssp) 59. 3rd - accelerator cable recall 2704l. Completed all recalls; last on 3/2/05. 2). 2/2005 I started experiencing intermittent problems with my vehicle:
- the car stops running usually when slowing down for a stop sign or red light. The car has stopped in the middle of traffic, in the height of rush hour. The car stopped exiting a post office backing up traffic causing motorist to seek another exit. Have had various other stops but have been lucky not to cause any accidents. - the car will not start; usually upon short trips. After waiting 3 - 5 minutes have been able to start the vehicle. Have encountered this numerous times. I limit driving at night due to the unpredictability and lack of confidence in my vehicle. 3) I have had my car service at oakland Mazda (510)893-7282 (3/2/05-recall,
4/9/05, 4/19/05, 5/11/05, & 6/20/05) and have discussed the problem with the serv advisor, ken miller & service manager. The dealership informed me they thoroughly checked-out my car each time they serviced it. They have repeated the recall which mostly describes my symptoms (re-calibration recall 1904d) at least twice. They also contacted the Mazda headquarters service center for documentation on how to check out my vehicle. I also contacted the Mazda customer assistance center at (800)222-5500 in may of 2005, they told me that if necessary they could dispatch a service technician to fly in and repair my vehicle; they also sent a report to the oakland district mgr. I contacted the Mazda cust assist center again on 7/14/05 , they told me that they would not be able to help me further with my car problem. 7/15- I contacted the dealership in fremont (where I bought the car) explained my problems and asked if they would consider taking a look at my car but the serv mgr never called me back.

Vehicle has stalled in major intersections on at least 10 occasions when removing foot from gas. Vehicle has been repaired by dealer on 4 occasions, replacing the iac valve with updated models on at least two separate occasions. Nhtsa campaign id numbers: 04v583000 and/or 04v175000 have dealt with similar complaints. Mazda north America is now requiring me to do an "extensive test drive on public roads in vero beach, florida with their representative in order to duplicate my concern". I have informed Mazda north America by mail on two occasions and by telephone on four occasions that this vehicle is inherently dangerous and will cause injury to someone. I hold Mazda north America responsible for any such injuries. Rush d. Lawson. I ask the NHTSA to investigate this complaint and to inquire as to why Mazda north America is knowingly placing consumers and innocent individuals on the streets at risk in a vehicle which is known to be inherently dangerous.

I've owned this vehicle for a little over 2 years and it has been to the dealer for repairs 7 times now. No one can seem to find the reason why the check engine light stays on, why the fuel consumption is so poor, why the vehicle shifts constantly and for no reason at all, or why the vehicle "shudders" when the engine is on. The check fuel cap light has come on twice and the same part replaced twice. The canister close valve and idle air control valve have both failed. I have spent money on a fuel induction service because it was recommended by the service dealer. I had the transmission flushed because of a technical service bulletin for the torque converter - a problem that had to be identified by aamco and told to Mazda before they would try to fix the problem. I have called Mazda customer service and got anything but customer service. My problems began long before the warranty had expired; however, Mazda could care less about their lack of ability to fix ongoing problems. This vehicle is a life-safety hazard and needs to be recalled completely, not part by part. I will never buy a Mazda again. This is my third and last. The Tribute is by far the worst thing ever manufactured by Mazda. They should be embarassed to have this model on the road!.

The contact owns a 2001 Mazda Tribute. In 2004, the vehicle unexpectedly stalled while driving under 50 mph. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they adjusted the pcm module, which was under a recall. The repair seemed to have corrected the failure; however, four years later, the vehicle is experiencing the same failure. She took the vehicle back to the dealer, but they could not find any failures. The failure could not be diagnosed because it is intermittent. The vehicle is currently at the dealer. The failure mileage was 40,000 and current mileage was 78,000. Updated 09/10/08. Updated 09/11/08.

I had the 1904-d recall (recalibration of pcm) done on my Mazda Tribute about 1 week ago. Shortly thereafter, my car stalled on the interstate at 75 mph. We did not have an accident but it could have been pretty severe. After bringing the Tribute back to the Mazda dealer, the pcm had failed. So the recall didn't work on my vehicle. It is currently in the shop to be fixed.

The contact owns a 2002 Mazda Tribute. While the contact was driving approximately 35 mph, the engine completely stalled without warning. The vehicle restarted and continued traveling. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the technician informed the contact that the failure was related to the power control module. The vehicle was repaired under the service warranty. The same failure reoccurred four to five years after the replacement of the power control module. There was a recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 04v175000 (power train:automatic transmission:control module tcm, pcm). The contact was in the process of notifying the manufacturer to determine whether the VIN was included in the recall defect. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 10,000.

When slowing down or proceeding to a stop, the car completely shut down in middle of the road while the engine is still running. The brakes will freeze up and the only way to stop the car is to pull up on the hand brake. The car will restart. This has always happened in traffic and is a very dangerous situation. Brought the car into the dealership the first time on may 3, 2003. Dealer said that they replaced the idle control valve. Two weeks later, the same problem arised where the car completely died in traffic. Brought it back to the dealer on June 3, 2003, they said there was improper operation and reprogrammed the pcm. The car died down again a week later while driving slowing down in traffic on the freeway. Again brought it back to the dealer for the third time June 19, 2003. Left the car overnight and had the technician drive the car 100+ miles home, but they could not duplicate the problem and sent the car home. Car died again in traffic. Brought the car back to the dealership the fourth time on July 1, 2003, and once again dealer was unable to duplicate the car. Advised me to keep driving the car until they problem worsened. This is a very dangerous situation as the car is in motion at all times when it has died and in traffic. A potentional dangerous and fatal situation that needs to be addressed immediately! the car was purchased in June 2002, and since then it has had a master cylinder leak, air bag circuit failure, as well as fuel system electrical wiring problems. Mazda needs to be aware of the potential risk factors involved in its Tribute models and recall the cars.

Owned my Tribute for a year before the problems began. On 3/15/02 I took it in because the low coolant light kept coming on. The dealership couldn't find a problem, but I had them do a 30k mile service and check everything from front to back. Had a rental for two days. On 6/10/02 I took it in because it suddenly started stalling dead at stops and yields. I almost wrecked due to this. Cause: internal failure. The dealership replaced the control unit, idle air valve, coolant fan relay. I had a rental for three days. On 8/5/02 it had to be towed because the ignition switch completely locked up and wouldn't turn. Dealership put in a new ignition switch and cylinder. My keys had to be reprogrammed. I had a rental for two days. On 11/13/02 I took it in because the check engine light kept coming on and the engine did not idle smoothly. The dealership could not duplicate the problem and I used their rental for three days. On 12/24/02 the engine light came back, the engine idled rough and the entire vehicle was visibly shaking. The dealership told me that one of the six coils was bad and needs to be replaced or one wrong spark could ruin the whole engine. Looks like I have the rental for at least a week. It just went over 50k miles, so my basic warranty is up, however the emisions conrol system (engine) is warranted until 80k miles. It seems a shame that Mazda would put out such poor quality and problematic vehicles to their loyal customers. Maybe they should add that to their "zoom, zoom" commercials.

I have just found this website and realized that an existing problem that I had been complaining about in my car. The dealer claimed the problem didn't exist ,even after the first recall. I brought in to fix. I had no knowledge of the power train recall the manufacturer never informed me of this problem at all nor the dealer. I've been an owner for 6 years. An extended warranty, I am apauled at the way Mazda Ford dealers handle there customers after repeatedly telling them of this problem. I'd like to know what I'm going to do at this point but to engage a petiton to my friends and family not to buy this product Ford Mazda. I think this is wrong on your part what can I do about this problem now that it's getting worst . You've put my life and my families life at risk knowing that if my car stalls out while driving which it has already happened on a few occasions. The last incident was coming home from peekskill NY and the car staled on me 6times. Please let the dealer know this is a real problem.

My 2001 Tribute had a problem shifting in/out of overdrive - a shuddering as if it couldn't make up it's mind. 2 calls to Mazda and 2 calls to dealer gave same results - "what problem" but web sites say it is common. Dealer claims failure to change xmsn fluid at 22500 may have caused it; problem happened way before that (summer 2002) and now (Feb 04) conditions worse - won't shift. Won't accelerate. Dealer changed fluid, reprogrammed pcm; said it was fixed, but it is still the same. I think they are waiting for warranty to expire. Car is unsafe to drive, but I have to take it back. This trend seems like a "lemon-law" case and a lot of us need help, like a Mazda recall.
