Failure Date: 04/17/2010

My 2003 Mazda Tribute just recently began losing power. Late last week I noticed it wasn't grabbing as it should shifting (automatic) between third and fourth gear. Took it took recommended repair show and they are indicating transmission rebuild is required. I just checked the fluid level last week and about two or three weeks prior and all was well there. Engine blew on same vehicle at 70k miles despite oil changes every 3000 miles. Repair shop estimate: $3500 for the following: filter, overdrive band, bushing kit, bearings, drive chain, torque converter, solenoid block, mlp switch, forward planetary gear, and fluid. I cannot believe a vehicle this age with less than 80,000 miles has lost an engine and transmission under normal wear and tear, when proper maintenance has been performed. Carmax did honor the warranty for the engine failure, but the extended warranty coverage only extends to 75k.

On July 9, 2007, I paid to have my transmission rebuilt after a transmission failure in our 2001 Mazda Tribute, (ES-v6 4wd), resulted in stranding my wife and young daughter on a busy roadside, 45 miles from home, in san leandro. At the time of the transmission failure the car had 93,782 miles on it. I purchased the Mazda new in 2001 from the almaden Mazda dealership in san jose. (now capitol Mazda). The transmission repair involved towing the car to a shop and rebuilding the automatic transmission. The rebuild included replacing the torque converter, solenoids, direct drum, shell, pistons, and a valve body upgrade among other parts. The repair cost was $3085. 00 plus towing charges. The incident also resulted in the loss of use of the car for 1 week. At the time of the failure the car was out of warranty, and I considered myself an unfortunate victim of unusual circumstances. However, since that time I've learned that transmission failures in the 2001 Mazda Tribute and the cd4e automatic transmission are an all too common occurrence and that my experience is not rare at all. In fact, reports on the internet suggest that the occurrence of similar transmission failures at relatively low mileage, between 50,000 and 100,000 miles, is alarmingly common in the Mazda Tribute.

The contact owns a 2003 Mazda Tribute. While driving between 45-65 mph, the vehicle makes a loud vibrating sound as if the transmission was failing. The contact feels that the driveshaft will spit in half. The final assessment was that the torque converter needed to be replaced. The purchase date was unknown. The current mileage was 91,000 and failure mileage was 87,000.

Shutter of the transmission/torque converter when traveling around 45 mph. Problem first reported on the vehicle around 30,000 miles at which time the dealer flushed the transmission fluid per tech assistance ref. 272101. Dealer determined "no problem found" when the shutter was reported again at 48,000 miles. When the problem was reported at 51,000 miles, dealer again flushed the transmission and reflashed the pcm. The problem occurred again at 56,000 miles at which time the dealer determined the transmssion needed to be replaced. Transmission was replaced at 58,500 miles. Problem discovered again around 88,000 miles; again, dealer flushed the transmission. Problem occurred again at 98,500 miles at which time the dealer replaced the torque converter.

After 3 yrs and 30k miles the transmission would vibrate(torque converter) when shifting to overdrive. Dealership : tranny fluid oxidized and should change since 30k though manual stated change every 30k under extreme driving conditions, and 3 yrs 30k doesn't qualify. So far so good at 40k but Mazda forums show many of the same complaints.

I've owned this vehicle for a little over 2 years and it has been to the dealer for repairs 7 times now. No one can seem to find the reason why the check engine light stays on, why the fuel consumption is so poor, why the vehicle shifts constantly and for no reason at all, or why the vehicle "shudders" when the engine is on. The check fuel cap light has come on twice and the same part replaced twice. The canister close valve and idle air control valve have both failed. I have spent money on a fuel induction service because it was recommended by the service dealer. I had the transmission flushed because of a technical service bulletin for the torque converter - a problem that had to be identified by aamco and told to Mazda before they would try to fix the problem. I have called Mazda customer service and got anything but customer service. My problems began long before the warranty had expired; however, Mazda could care less about their lack of ability to fix ongoing problems. This vehicle is a life-safety hazard and needs to be recalled completely, not part by part. I will never buy a Mazda again. This is my third and last. The Tribute is by far the worst thing ever manufactured by Mazda. They should be embarassed to have this model on the road!.

Known problem in transmissions used in Ford escapes and Mazda Tributes. Problem with torque converter lock not operating properly. Ford issued oasis fix and TSB but refuses to acknowledge problem when vehicles off warranty. Has existed and been unofficially acknowledged by Ford since 2001. Has resulted in complete transmission failure of vehicles being operated at highway speeds. Personally, problem has returned for 2nd time in 7,000 miles after factory "fix".

Failure Date: 06/01/2003

At 50,089 miles, my transmission failed; more specifically, the torque converter malfunctioned resulting in total transmission failure. I have had numerous problems with this vehicle -- I had to replace rotors within the first year of ownership, and may have to do so again at 52,000 miles. The vehicle has trouble starting, the brakes aren't very responsive, and I've had to replace the ignition switch with an unattractive and impractical replacement, because the dealership reported that the type that came with my vehicle wasn't available. The rear window has leaked. Needless to say, the warranty expired just before my transmission failed.
