Mazda Tribute owners have reported 17 problems related to transmission failure (under the power train category).
This complain concerns the powertrain - automatic transmission. The car, was parked during the day in a standard parking spot. When I later tried to back up, it would not go into reverse. It had worked perfectly that morning! the car was brought to a local mechanic. They stated that reverse, drive and second did not function. This is the second transmission which had been installed by this mechanic in this Tribute! it had only 39,000 miles. It was installed in 2007. The first transmission failed at 110,000 miles. The Mazda corporation would not admit to a problem with their transmissions at the time the second one (a Mazda transmission bought directly from a Mazda dealer)was installed). The mechanic, in good consciousness, will not replace this a third time. So we are left with a perfectly good body, new tires, and a car that is junk. The mechanic said this transmission is poorly designed. All we can do not is donate it or part it out. We bought the car, used, from carmax in roseville, CA, in 2006.

Mazda Tribute 2005 transmission failed at 29,380 miles . Replaced with remanufactured transmission and was not give a warranty on the (they said new) transmission--was told the remaining warranty on my car was all I got. Other transmission shops nearby said they gave 12 to 24 month warranty and offered extended warranties on their remanufactured transmissions. I was informed by the transmission shops that Mazda and Ford escape were known for their unreliability and frequency of failure of their transmissions. The "other " shops got these cars at 80,000 miles usually, which means to me that Mazda dealers are more than likely getting a substantial number of transmission failures that are under warranty and then making the customer liable for the next transmission failure at a substantial cost between 2200 to 2800 dollars.

Transmission failure at 55,000 miles.
My 2001 Mazda Tribute's transmission has failed. Unfortunately I'm having to have it rebuilt. Per Mazda consumer message boards this is not an unusual situation. The manual transmission fails with little to no notice. 2nd gear disappears at certain temperatures, and there is no gear grinding which is common with a stripped gear. There is also an issue with transmissions getting stuck in reverse and not coming out. There is obviously a manufacturing issue as the remaining gears disappear altogether. Everything I've read on the message boards I have personally experienced in the past week with my vehicle and as this is not an isolated issue I'd like to know why no recall was issued?.
Complete transmission failure on my 2004 Mazda Tribute with under 52,000 miles.
Automatic transmission failure on 2003 Mazda Tribute ES (awd & 4wd) with 100,000 miles. Transmission cut out while driving and would not shift into any forward gear. Only reverse was functional and apparently not affected by failure. Had SUV hauled on flat-bed to dealer who initially indicated that it was probably the linkage, but they could not get it to shift into any forward gear either (only reverse). Upon further inspection dealer indicated transmission was blown, requiring a complete replacement, costing almost $4k.

Automatic transmission failure.
Purchased new in 2002-with 85000 highway miles-transmission failed- while driving on I-84 in connecticut-vehichle went into the passing gear on its own then stopped -my husband was able to coast off to the shoulder of the road. It was our luck he was past the construction zone and he was going down hill. There was no prior notice that the transmission would fail.
