From a stop switching to gas pedal or accelerator the pedal sticks and hard to press and does it back to back for a few minutes. Also it can do it at random after driving for awhile and stop at a light it will stick when trying to go. Once it stops sticking I have to quickly hit the brakes to not cause over acceleration.

Keys come out of the ignition when my Mazda Tribute is not in park. I forgot today that the front rotors are real bad and need replaced and I only have 41140 miles on my 2001 Tribute which I bought brand new from the Mazda dealer in town. I have to replace the front door handle twice now since it would not open from the inside.

While braking for a stop light, the engine suddenly revved up and the vehicle began to accelerate, even though I was applying maximum force to the brake. I quickly shifted into neutral and brought the vehicle to a stop, fortunately without crashing into stopped vehicle ahead of me. My right foot was being used for braking and was no where near the accelerator pedal. I turned off the ignition, restarted the car, and drove slowly home without further incident. I have not driven since, and had made arrangements to bring the vehicle into a garage for service Monday morning (tomorrow. ).

As the weather gets cold, the gas pedal becomes harder to depress, and at times will not depress at all. This has caused numerous near misses when attempting to accelerate around a turn as the pedal will lock in place and the vehicle will not accelerate at all. It takes significant force to depress the pedal, to the point of stomping on it, and even then it does not always work. This is a very serious safety issue, one that will at some point result in a very severe if not deadly crash, and no one seems the slightest bt interested in fixing the problem.

I started my car and the 'check engine' light flashed on-and-off. Thinking it would go away, I drove to route 3 in south shore, MA. Once on the highway, the light did not stop flashing, so I pulled over. Thirty seconds after pulling over in a rest area, white smoke appeared from under the hood. 10 seconds later, black smoke came from the hood which was accompanied with a burning smell. Luckily, someone from massdot was in the rest area and we determined that it was a car fire. We proceeded to step back and call 911 from a safe distance. The engine area of the car was on fire until the fire department was able to put it out.

The first 2 to 4 times the accelerator is used (not pushed hard), the cable sticks. We have to push harder on the pedal, then it suddenly releases. This causes the vehicle to jump in the direction chosen. It is very difficult to smoothly back our of the garage or parking space. Then the accelerator is slow to return to idle. It appears to be the same issue as recall NHTSA campaign #04v583000 for 2004 Tributes, but our vehicle was built at the end of 2003.

Failure Date: 11/18/2010

The contact owns a 2003 Mazda Tribute lx(na). The contact stated that when trying to start his vehicle, the engine suddenly exploded but did not ignite; parts flew and penetrated the hood. The vehicle was towed to a independent mechanic who informed the contact that the failure was due to the type of engine, which was called an "interference engine" and the design of it. The mechanic recommended that he replace the engine. The failure mileage was approximately 74,000.

Upon starting, a severe explosion occurred, denting the hood from parts of engine. Smoke poured out from hood, but ignited gasoline did not leave engine. Engine is an interference Ford product and SUV has always been well maintained and serviced. The severity of the danger of this explosion cannot nor should be overlooked or dismissed. Had the hood been open, someone could have resulted in severe injury or possibly death. I have tried to work with Mazda for a resolution in this matter and all attempts have failed. As a previously satisfied customer for almost 30 years, I am frustrated and infuriated by their denials to work out a resolution, in either a new engine or substantial trade on a new vehicle. An engine with this low mileage exploding is unheard of and, certainly, not expected. My letter to Mazda ceo and president james o'sullivan and my mechanic's assessment is available.

When cold, gas pedal will not depress. Becomes firm and resistant to pressure. Have to slam on pedal, but receive no power from engine---happens alot when trying to turn corners, will not accelerate- can cause severe if not fatal accident if this occurs at the wrong time. Please force Mazda to issue recall for this part, could be related to throttle body as well.

When the weather gets cool (sub 50f) the gas pedal will stick. When the gas pedal is fully depressed and you go to push it down it sticks. When this sticking finally lets go the vehicle jumps forward. The v6 version of this SUV has a recall on the pedal but I own the v4.

Failure Date: 11/20/2009

We took to the Mazda dealer (5900 north oak trafficway, kansas city, mo 64118) in 2009 because the car did not start. They changed the starter motor and still it did not work then they replaced the battery and it did not work again them they said it is the alternator this all happened just within a week or two and had to spend lot of money. Then again we had to replace the battery four times with in 2009 to 2014. Right now we have the same problem and an auto dealer is saying it is the alternator. I strongly think there should be some kind of recall to this as I have not seen a car like this that has so many electrical problem and this is not safe. Thank you for checking on this and hope this problem will be solved and people will not have any problems in the future.

My Tribute is a v-6 3. 0l and the vehicle was manufactured 11-04 per driver's door sticker. Problem-- after leaving my house and driving down my rural road, I had noticed the vehicle speed stayed the same (approx 40 mph) even after letting up on the gas pedal. The cruise control was off. So I had did a quick tap on the gas pedal to see if the constant speed would stop and allow the vehicle to slow down. The vehicle did respond and slowed down. This happened to me on three different occasions and all on the same road and in the same area.

Failure Date: 01/22/2009

The spark plug in my Mazda Tribute 2002 blew out of the socket causing me to hunt down a valve cover. The mechanic said I didn't tighten it enough which is false I believe there is a equipment defect with the compressing somehow. I purposefully retightinened the remaining two that I could get at and the mechanic said the very next day that they where loose. I used a torque specified wrench to the manuals description is there a problem with that years Ford made Mazdas. A fire could break out or an explosion.

2006 Mazda Tribute. Runs fine durring warm weather. At the slightest outbreak of cold weather, accelerator does not depress, unable to get any power from the engine. Will freeze up at times while driving or not work at all. Has been doing this for years, Mazda refuses to acknowledge problem. Has almost caused numerous accidents when accelrating around a turn due to loss of power. Mazda has recalled previous model years for this problem but will not recall this model. Please change that.

Failure Date: 10/27/2008

The contact owns a 2004 Mazda Tribute. While turning at 15 mph, the vehicle's computer can rev the engine to keep it running. However, the engine is revving up to 3,000 rpms. The failure occurs while the vehicle is in drive or reverse. A crash could occur if the contact's foot is not depressing the brake pedal at the time. The failure is intermittent and sometimes the vehicle revs up to 1,000 rpms and other times up to 3,000 rpms. The dealer from where the vehicle was purchased stated that the vehicle was fine and designed to perform in that manner. The failure has since recurred and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it is currently located. The contact is attempting to trade in the vehicle. The VIN was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 66,000.
