While driving downhill at about 30 mph, the engine stalled without warning. Power steering froze. I was able to stop and restart the engine. I took it to a dealer, where some kind of computer was reprogrammed, but I was also told that Mazda has no fix for this problem, only a checklist of things that they try. This is an extremely dangerous defect, and I can't believe there is not some kind of immediate recall on this problem. Someone is going to get hurt! short of a fire, major structural failure, or tire blowout, I can't think of anything more dangerous, or I should say equally dangerous, than to be suddenly left without any power or ability to steer. With traffic, highway speeds, or curve roads (which a bound mountains home state), this is a disaster waiting to happen. ***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12-12-02 cut over to artemis***761982.

On March 5 I was driving down a slight hill at approximately 40 mph when the engine stalled with no warning. I lost use of my power steering and had very little time to steer my car onto the shoulder of the road to avoid being rear-ended.

Proceeding on a slight downhill at roughly 40 mph my new vehicle's engine stalled/died. I imediately slipped the transmission into neutral and re-started. This allowed me to continue. Power brakes and steering were non-operable during this time. Had I been proceeding at a faster speed or not reacted quickly this could have been a very dangerous situation. I have heard this has been an issue with these vehicles.

I am reporting what I believe to be a new serious safety concern with 2001 Mazda Tributes. The engine stalled while driving downhill, causing sudden loss of power brakes/steering, and I barely avoided a serious accident as I approached the bottom of the hill. I learned from dealer that I am the 5th customer at their dealership alone to report this problem (downhill stall) and that Mazda has no fix yet because the problem is intermittent and Mazda has been unable to duplicate. I believe the dealership is doing everything within their power. I am requesting that the government get involved and force Mazda headquarters to step up their investigation and issue a warning to consumers before people die.

The engine stalled while the truck was being driven on a flat, dry road at about 40 mph. When that happened, the power steering and the power brakes stopped working, so the truck was very hard to steer and to stop. The driver pulled over and then was able to start the engine again. This has only happened once to us but this is still very serious. We think this should be considered a safety hazard for this truck.

I was driving approximately 40 miles per hour when the engine stalled, losing power steering, brakes, and clutch. Could not restart, so the dealership picked me up. Dealership stated the clip on the clutch had broken. This problem has only happened that one time, however on several other occasions the vehicle's idling has gone crazy and jumped and the vehicle acted as if it were going to cut off. This lasted several minutes and subsided. I was four months pregnant when this occurred and was almost hit by several vehicles because I had not been able to get the vehicle completely off the road. I am now driving around with a six week old child. I bought this vehicle because I thought it would be a "safe" vehicle for my son. I would like to know that it is!.
