2007 Mercedes Benz E350. Owner/ occupants smell gas in the cabin, after fill up, until about 3/4- 1/2 tank. Smell seems to be originating from mid-rear drivers side. Odor is present from 0 to approx 45mph (at times) with windows up and down. Reference NHTSA action number: pe12001.
Just bought our 07 E350 on 4//7/15 and it had a full tank of gas. Got it home and when we got out we could smell gas really bad! we couldn't see it leaking anywhere so pulled it in the garage and it stunk up our whole garage like gas. We thought maybe the dealer over filled it so maybe it was just venting fumes. It eventually went away. Then on 4/12/15 I filled the tank up and the gas smell came back. So it only happens when it's a full tank. This is a problem for alot of e-class w211 cars. Mercedes-benz has recently made an extended warranty to have it fixed for non-pzev vehicles but I have a pzev vehicle and they won't warranty it for me! my little girls ride in the back seat that is right over the gas tank! this should be fixed pzev vehicle or not!.

There is a strong smell of gasoline when vehicle is parked. Took it to the dealer and they indicated there is not a recall for this issue and the tank should be replaced. Researched this and found there are several complaints for this issue that have been lodged. The average benz owner parks their car in the garage. The average homeowner has a gas water heater located in the garage. This is an open flame and gasoline connection which can result in an explosion.
Noticed that whenever I filled up my tank I smell gasoline inside the vehicle. This always happened anytime I fill my tank.
Fuel tank leaking gas under rear seat.
Filled gas in car up to full and have had a strong smell of gas inside and outside of my car. I always fill the car only up to a half of a tank but with the holiday weekend coming I filled all the way up since gas was cheaper. Never had this problem until I filled it all the way up. After looking this up on the internet I found this site and wanted to give my experience so hopefully this problem will be resolved by Mercedes Benz. Its sad that it will take someone dying or a major fire to have mercedes actually look into this situation.
Fuel is leaking from top of fuel tank when tank is full, causing odor inside of cabin, and fuel to drip onto ground.
Gas gauge once gets to 1/2 tank no longer shows how much gas is in the tank smell gas fumes after refueling.
Every time the gas tank is filled 100% full (only until gas pump nozzle first click) and the car is being driven for less than 20 miles and parked, I can smell very strong gasoline odor from outside the car. I have tried to find the issue and lifted it up. What can be seen is about 1oz of gasoline puddle on rear undercover (underneath gas tank). Other than that, I can see leaked dried gasoline path on the side of the tank, which points to the location of the puddle. This string gasoline odor issue cannot be seen or smelled if the tank is filled only 3/4 of tank volume. This is issue has been reported to Mercedes Benz service at columbia, mo. However, they quoted $600 just to find the issue, even though this is clearly manufacturing defect, since hundreds of similar cases can be found at several forums and so many has been reported here.
Have been smelling gas when tank is filled; goes off after driving for a while. Came to dealer for another problem and was told about tank leak. This has been the problem for a while, but did not realize it is a tank leak.
The contact owns a 2007 mercedes-benz E350. The contact stated that fuel was leaking from the vehicle and onto the rear seat. The contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic for diagnostic testing. The mechanic stated that the entire fuel tank needed to be replaced. The contact did not call the manufacturer nor have the vehicle repaired. The failure mileage was 80,000.
Strong gasoline smell after I fill the tank up. I never top it off, normal fill up until the gas nozzle clicks. The smell comes from left rear side. I am concerned that it will catch on fire one day.
Strong gasoline odors inside and outside of the vehicle upon refueling the tank to full. The garage fumes with gas odors and the vapors can even be seen in the air. We are afraid to fill the tank and also very afraid if someone is nearby with a cigarette or fire. .
I filled the fuel tank and smelled fumes as I drove away. I then parked the car in my driveway and fuel was leaking from under the back seat under the car, very dangerous!!!.
Parked in garage. Every morning I would smell strong gas odor. Told by jackson automotive the gas tank was leaking. Asked them if gas tanks should go bad and they said no. They should last a lifetime. They charged me $1922. 31 to replace and $41. 08 for gas they put in new tank.
The contact owns a 2007 mercedes E350. The contact stated that after entering the vehicle, the contact smelled fuel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where it was stated the fuel unit and fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000.
Had fuel tank sender units repaired to stop fuel leak , less than 2 years the tank is leaking again from the sender units , dealer would not repair it .
The fuel tank located under the back seat is leaking fuel into the passenger compartment it is the sending unit that is bad like 250,000 other mercedes mercedes claims our VIN number is not covered and will not honor the recall.
Engine light came on, taken to dealership four times. Dealer stated that there may be a leak on top of gas tank or tank may have to be replaced. Previous owner stated that there was a strong smell of gas in vehicle when tank is full. Previous owner had same issue after car was only four years of age.
I found leaking liquid close to the rear left wheel and when lifting the rear wheel I found leaking liquid from the tank. After smelling and touching I realize is gasoline . I check in the internet for similar problems and I found a lot of same complaints.
Tank leaks gas when filled . Fuel link has not been repaired at this time. Mercedes will not warranty.
Fuel smell inside and outside the car when the tank was full. Fuel smell gradually lessened when the tank was about 3/4 to 1/2 empty. Took the car to mb dealer and they changed the fuel sending unit under the rear seat behind the driver. It cost about $700. I kept the fuel sending unit and looking at it under magnification, I can see bad workmanship around the sending unit not being sealed properly, it was bad from the moment it was placed in the car. This item should not go bad on a car less than 6 years old that has only about 20,000 miles and always garaged. Shame on Mercedes Benz that did not recall this item.
Purchased certified pre-owned car in June 2012. On or about Feb 2013, car started having illuminating odor in the cabin that resembled fuel or anti-freeze. Garage and car ordor was so bad it actually entered my home and I had to leave the garage door open to ventilate. Went on line and found other owners exhibiting exact defect. Took vehicle to mercedes dealer and was informed that a leak from the fuel tank was the cause and it was not from damage but from the sending unit and lines. The dealer informs me that the repair is not covered under the warranty and that it will cost $2100. 00 to fix. After reading the warranty and contacting mercedes directly, I contacted the dealer and informed them that it is a covered item and they should make the repair as a warrantied item. They re-checked with mercedes and called me back and stated that they had “did something in the system to make it reject” and it is a covered repair and will be fixed under the warranty. I am making this complaint because I believe that the replacement unit will be the same oem part that has not been modified to solve this failure from duplicating later.
Fuel is leaking from tank after fillup on left side near left rear tire. First noticed fuel gauge not working when I ran out of gas at 51,000 miles in 2011. Dealer told me gauge was located inside tank and it would be necessary to replace tank at cost of $2,000 w/o warranty,so I did not fix it; just used odometer. We have noticed gas fumes in garage for a long time, but thought it was from the gas engines of yard tools. After a fill up 2 days ago, we noticed a very strong odor next to car and investigated and noticed signs of liquids on parts of undercarriage of vehicle. Did an internet search and found this is a known problem with this vehicle. Present mileage is 87,000.
We have smelled a gasoline smell in our garage for a couple of years and never considered it was the mercedes. We also keep small gasoline tools in the garage and a harley davidson motorcycle. We filled the tank on January 21, 2013 and the next morning the smell was so bad we need to air out the garage. Research on the internet revealed it was the mercedes. We took it to the dealer and the leak was from the fuel sending unit in the gasoline tank. We had it repaired at a cost of $739. 09. Mercedes has not offered any relief for the cost of the repair.
Beginning at approximately 60,500 miles my 2007 Mercedes Benz E350 4matic sedan developed a strong gasoline odor inside the vehicle. This smell progressively got stronger and upon inspection at the dealership it was found that the sending units attached to the fuel tanks below the rear driver's side and passenger side seats were leaking fuel through a faulty seal causing the fuel to absorb into the seat cushion. This likely created a potential fire hazard inside the cabin of the vehicle, particularly in the rear seat.
Nhtsa action# pe12001 strong fuel/gasoline odor smell coming from the drivers side rear wheel area. Fuel tank is filled to full (after it "clicks" off) and this is when the odor is most prevalent. The E350 is parked in a single, detached house's 2-car garage. Fuel/gasoline smell is particularly strong in the enclosed 2-car garage. I am afraid the these vapors will ignite when in an enclosed space with the furnace in the sharing the same space (being that it is winter time now and the furnace is now kicking on to heat my house).
When gas tank is filled, inside cabin smells gas which is not tolerable and need to be addressed.
The vehicle's check engine light illuminated after commute from work. The vehicle was taken to mercedes-benz of el paso for diagnostic testing which revealed a crack in the fuel tank allowing fumes to escape from the vehicle. When tank is filled, gas fumes could be smelled throughout the house if the car is parked in the garage. Fuel tank was replaced at a cost of $2400 with repairs completed by Mercedes Benz of el paso in February 2013.
In January, 2009, I purchased a certified used merceds benz E350 from a mercedes dealer in tuscaloosa, alabama. At the time I purchased my vehicle it had approximately 40,000 miles on the odometer. In December, 2012, I began to notice the smell of fuel in the cabin of my car. The smell was overwhelming and increased over time. At the time I first noticed the fuel smell, my vehicle had approximately 90,000 miles on the odometer and the vehicle was no longer under warranty. I took the vehicle to my mercedes dealer in georgetown, texas, and was informed of the faulty gas seal and was very surprised when they informed me that I had to replace the seal, entire gas tank, and gas lines. To fix the problem, which was now a safety hazard as well as an environmental hazard to the occupants of my vehicle, I had to pay over $3,600 out of pocket to have the repair completed. The repair was completed in an afternoon and I have had no further issues. My complaint is that this is a known safety hazard with the make/model of this car and mercedes refused to fix this known safety issue. Without fixing this problem, the car became unusable.
I purchased this vehicle new in oct. 2006. On Nov. 7, 2012 with 19600 miles I filled the gas tank full of fuel and noticed immediately inside cabin, trunk, and outside of the vehicle was a strong fuel smell beyond belief! after several days of this issue I researched to find out there are many problems from other owners with this exact same problem. After reviewing there issues I started my own investigation and after removing my back seat; I found that fuel is leaking from the fuel system inside the cabin of vehicle. I am so disappointed and highly concerned for my safety as well as other innocent driver's around me that a sudden spark may ignite my vehicle on fire and cause a mass explosion while driving. Please with all these current issues find mbusa responsible. I have given mbusa years of loyalty in owning three of there vehicles. We as consumers deserve better from a company with their values and history.
The contact owns a 2007 mercedes E350. The contact stated that a fuel smell emitted into the cab of the vehicle and fuel was leaking from the top of the fuel tank. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing and the entire fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 87,000.
Strong odor of gasoline inside the cabin of the vehicle. Odor so strong that passengers can not be inside the vehicle for more then several minutes at a time without feeling nausea or dizziness. Hundreds of complaints have been filed for this exact occurrence and mercedes still refuses to acknowledge the defect in the fuel tank. The smell is irreplaceable once the pooling of the fuel absorbs into the back seats . The gasoline vapors inside the cabin are not only unacceptable but an extreme health and safety hazard to occupants of the vehicle. Mileage at the time of initial incident was 63,000.
