3 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 01/09/2014

I bought my car used a couple of months ago. The last two times I filled my fuel tank I smell gas in my garage. When I only fill to 3/4 or less there's no gas smell. The smell will subside once my gas drops to 3/4 full. This was repeatable both times I filled my fuel tank. Please reference NHTSA action# pe12001.

4 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 12/23/2013

My check engine light went on and I immediately took the car to my mercedes dealer who, after investigating, said that I had a leak in the seam of my fuel tank. The leak was in the passenger compartment but I couldn't sense any gasoline odor. The dealer said that the tank had to be replaced and the charge would be $2200. I left the car for repair and when I picked it up the dealer said they would pay half the cost. After checking reports of the same problem on the web, I have been wondering if mercedes is covering up a potentially lethal defect in that model.

5 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 11/27/2013

My 2007 mercedes E350 has a fuel tank leak as determined by the mercedes dealership services dept. 6 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 10/01/2013

There was a very strong fuel smell that began 8 months ago every time I parked the car in the garage. It was almost like someone spilled some gasoline on the floor. A month ago the check engine light came on and indicated a p0456 error code on the obdii reader. I brought it in for a smoke test to find the leak and the driver's side fuel sending unit was leaking. After it was replaced, the check engine light still came on. The mercedes dealership said the fuel tank itself was cracked on the top part of the fuel tank where the 'nipples' are that connect the hoses to the carbon canister. I noticed online on mercedes forums that this is a very common complaint and that there is a lawsuit against mercedes for such a common defect.

7 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 09/02/2013

When the car's gas tank was filled, there was a distinct odor of gasoline when the car was parked in the garage. With a bedroom close by and an hvac system above, we thought this was unsafe and needed to be fixed. We were told that the gas tank needed to be replaced and this was a common problem, but there had been no recall. Mercedes ended up charging us a discounted price of $1476 for the repair, but I think there should be a recall and mercedes should have paid the full cost of repair.

8 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 08/30/2013

This is the second incident in 3 years involving my fuel tank! there is definitely a defect here!! the first time, I had my fuel tank replaced in 2010 (at 37,473 miles) because of a very strong odor of gasoline from inside the cabin of the vehicle after I would fill-up. This time I began to notice a very strong odor of gasoline from outside of the car, at the rear, left side of my vehicle, when it was parked in my garage. I took my car in for a regular service, and I was told that the mechanic also noticed a strong odor of gasoline from the rear left side of the vehicle. I have to take it back for further inspection. There is no fuel leaking onto the ground beneath the car, but there is clearly a leak somewhere. I searched online for recalls and came across this complaint.

My 2006 mercedes E350 smells of strong gas fumes every time I fill the tank. I never top off the tank and nothing ever spills out but the smell is very strong. 23 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 11/28/2011

When I fill up my gas tank, there is a strong fuel odor. After driving about 30 miles the odor goes away. Took it to the dealer and it was a crack in the upper portion of the fuel tank. This looks to be the exact same issue as many other E350 owners. Total cost for the repair was $2,100. Additionally my check engine light comes on and off randomly. Dealership said it was the camshaft adjusters that need to be replaced. Again, seems to be issues with numerous other owners. My Jeep which was half the price has had less problems than my 2007 E350.

24 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 11/23/2011

2007 vehicle with less than 30,000 miles. Upon filling fuel tank, vehicle emits gas odor near tank location (rear passenger side wheel). This continues until level in fuel tank is below approx. 3/4 full. Dealer initially replaced seals on fuel tank. Problem continued and they are now replacing the fuel sending units. Based on what I have seen on various discussions and forums, this seems to be a consistent, recurring issue and one that should be addressed by the manufacturer. Gas pooling on top of the tank behind the rear seat and the related emission of fumes is not acceptable nor safe.

30 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 04/01/2011

I have a 2007 E350 that had 2 cups of fuel sitting right above my left fuel sending unit and fuel tank. My garage smells of fuel every time when I fill up the tank. After further investigation and research, we found out that there is enough leaking fuel to cause a major fire in my car underneath the right back seat. Called the dealer and they would handle the issue, but they would still charge for parts and labor since the car does not have manufactured warranty anymore. There are thousands of complains out there but mercedes will not make a recall and handle the repairs. These cars can catch on fire since the fuel is leaking. I scheduled an appointment for the car to be fixed but since this is known problem and not the first person complaining about this, mbusa should be paying for these failures.

31 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 01/03/2011

I have a 2007 E350. My garage smells of fuel every time when I fill up the tank. The dealer mentioned that there is issue with fuel tank. Since this is known problem and not the first person complaining about this, mbusa should be paying for these failures.

32 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

A strong gas odor appeared outside the left rear wheel. This only happens when the gas tank is full or near full. It was so strong that I had to remove it from my garage due to the pilot light warnings on my house heating unit and hot water heating unit. Dealer replaced left fuel sending unit and it made the odor even stronger; it did not fix the problem. This is reported on the internet by many owners repeatedly trying to fix this unit to no avail. Experts I've talked to say it is a manufacturing defect in the tank and its various components that mb has know about for years originally appearing in the e55 amg's. Of course, since the fuel system is not completely closed, it is constantly releasing gas fumes into the atmosphere.

33 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 11/11/2010

In reference to pe12-001 ongoing investigation fuel leaks. When gas is put in car, strong gasoline smell inside cabin. Brought to attention to dealers several times & was assured there was nothing wrong. In March 2011, they replaced the fuel pump as goodwill gesture since complaints were received prior to warranty expiring. In April 2012 advised mercedes of fuel smell remained, at this time I was informed of a crack in gas tank under backseat. Fuel tank was replaced, brought car home, after filling with gas, once again strong fuel odor but accompanied by visual of fuel under auto. Mercedes now stated it was due to installation error & now was corrected. I have not picked up vehicle, do not have faith another potential life threatening "error" will not occur. How do we know if the replacement tank/pump doesn't have same design flaw, not worth my children's or my life to find out.

34 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 10/11/2010

Check engine light came on. Smelled gas in and around car. Dealer found minor purge leak. Vehicle failed fuel tank leak test. Gas is pooling in the area under the back seat behind the driver. Small nipple cannot be replaced without damage. Recommended new fuel tank. Fuel sending unit is a disaster. Same type of system that was in the e55 amg which was recalled. Please investigate. Updated 01/28/11 according to the invoice, the fuel tank was leaking at the top of the tank around the expansion plug. Updated 02/03/11.

35 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

After gas tank is filled fuel is forced from the top of what appears to be the fuel sending unit below the rear seat. The fuel pools and stains the insulation and bottom of the seat. It causes gas vapors in the car for weeks. Seat and padding have to be pulled and allowed to dry. Excess fuel has to be toweled from the area around the sending unit. Until the tank empties several gallons of gas this procedure has to be repeated. The smell of gasoline in the auto is unforgiveable. I read where this is a problem with many mb's of this type.
