Mercedes Benz S Class owners have reported 17 problems related to electrical system (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Mercedes bens never informed me that my car an s500 was involved in a recall to change the instrumental pannel lighting, now that it failed the miami mercedes dealership do not want to fix my car alleging that there was not any recall, that it was only a warranty extention beginning in 2001 for 10 years lleaving me out of coverage since my car is 2001. I think this is unfair to the unsuspecting public lack of communication and desire to do litle for the users of their cars my car is within the 10 years and refuse to fix it that is my complaint.

I have a 2001 mercedess430 VIN#wdbng70j81a137460 which has a failed instrument cluster. There appears to have been a recall issued in 2006 but it was limited to a certain number of VIN# and does not cover the widespread issues I have uncovered via my research. This is a serious defect that could cause a major accident as the lights go out, no gauges work, and you have no idea how fast you are going, what gear you are in e. G. You could accidentally reverse, etc. I called Mercedes Benz along with several dealers and they indicate that they will not cover this and the cost is exorbitant. This is a fatal error and can not be corrected to work or function at all without full replacement of the entire instrument cluster.
My 2000 mercedes s500 cluster ,back lighting , speedometer failed (unable to see instrument cluster) on April ,3 2011 mileage at time of defect 24,568 I saw that there is a recall for my car concerning the problem. I contacted the dealer and , I was inform that the extended warranty expired (recall). So I called the mercedes1-800-367-6372 number they informed me the same I was covered but expired. So I called NHTSA 1800 number they informed me that I would still be covered because the recall took place in 2006 and it is 10 years before it expires so until 2016. So I will appreciate some help concerning my problem. V. I,n wdbng75j5ya118075 NHTSA campaign id number 06v028000.

The contact owns a 2004 Mercedes Benz s500. While driving 65 mph he started to smell an electrical fire and continued to drive to his destination. After arriving to his destination he noticed that everything electrical in the rear of the vehicle was no longer working. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer. The dealer advised him that the drain hole for the air conditioner had filled the floor board with water. The dealer replaced the transponder module and the fuse box since the transponder melted during the failure. The failure mileage was 33,243 and the current mileage was 33,300.

Instrument cluster on 2000 my Mercedes Benz s500 illumination failed. Cannot see gauges nor odometer. An obvious safety hazard. Both dealer and m-b USA deny coverage under their 10-year warranty extension for this specific issue. The car was placed in service in 12/99 and waited for 10 years and 6 months before failure. Formerly known for durability and reliability over many years, the company is now unwilling to stand behind their defective product. This is a safety issue. Why would there be any time limit on a known safety failure?.
My car is having electrical malfunctions. The interior lights inside my car are malfunctioning. The lights on my dashboard are malfunctioning. I can't see how fast I'm driving because I can't see the speedometer. This is very unsafe for me. When the electrical malfunctions occur, nothing electrical, lights, seats work in the car.

A complete shutdown of the electrical system occurred after a rain. As a result I am unable to drive the car. Mercedes authorized mechanic cites "air intake at blower intake area was inverted at installation from the factory". The car is in process of being repaired. A complete overhaul of the electrical system will have to be performed. The mercedes dealer calls it "water intrusion".
My instrument cluster is flickering and I was told by mercedes west springfield I needed a new cluster at $1710. I searched online and found a recall for the exact same issue on newer S Class cars like mine, and many complaints of non-action on older (2000-2002) cars on the part of mercedes.
The instrument cluster panel on my s500 2000 Mercedes Benz lost its lighting and then lost all its functions. Mercedes has recalled 36,000 s500 2000 for this problem but my vehicle is not included in the recall. By their own admission, this problem constitutes a safety issue and costs approximately 2000 dollars to correct. I had to pay the money because my vehicle is not covered in the recall. Obviously, it should be. I had the cluster replaced as it was unsafe to drive under the conditions.
Lighting (instrument cluster) on the dashboard of my 2001 Mercedes Benz s500 VIN# wdbng75j31a194593 flickered for a couple of days then went out completely. It affected my automatic door locks and side mirror signal indicators. I cannot view the gauges/speedometer and use the preset buttons on the steering wheel while operating this vehicle.
Defect in Mercedes Benz 2001 s500 with the instrument cluster you loose all your in dash lights, gauges the whole panel goes dead you can't tell how fast your going, how much gas you have ,or if your car is overheated, nothing works, no miles, nothing this is very dangerous and mercedes is doing nothing to correct this problem, there dropping the ball I went in to have it checked and was told it cost 2300. 00 to repair this is not acceptable ,this is a safety hazard a recall is very much needed there are thousands of others out there with this problem. I hope mercedes do the right thing and protect it customer from a dealer malfunction, we spend too much money on mercedes cars to have things like this happen. Please, please do something for it's to late and someone gets hurt.
My 2003 mercedes s500 has twice electronically self-closed it's trunk on two separate users, on two separate occasions. This vehicle has been taken to two separate mercedes dealers for the problem. One of those dealers replaced a number of parts. Despite doing so, the second occurrence (last night), left my other half in tears, pain, with a recess in her head and a headache. The electronic trunk lid has had instances where it does not open all the way, does not close all the way, or a combination of the two. Then there is the more serious and I believe potentially life treating, unprovoked, unexplained and as yet un fixed electronic closing that has twice occurred when putting in or removing goods from the trunk. I would find it hard to believe that I am the only owner who has had such a problem. The metal trunk lid comes down with force striking directly on the top of an adults head. It is unknown what it would do to a non-adult. I have spoken to a representative for mercedes who states to her knowledge there is no problem and that they would be happy to get the car in and attempt to fix it, but can not guarantee they can. The first time it occurred, it hit me and nearly knocked me out. After bringing the car in I assumed it was fixed, however, after last night, it clearly is not. Though I can not make it perform upon command, I have no reason to believe it will not occur again.
2000 mercedes s500v steering wheel was replaced. Upon inspection of vehicle mechanic determined that instrument cluster had been worked on before. The vehicle was purchased with an odometer reading of 69 miles. When the consumer contacted the manufacturer he was told that he was not the original owner of the vehicle. The vehicle had been owned by another person for three months. The consumer was then told that warranty work had been performed on the vehicle and that at that time the mileage was 128 miles. A day later, more warranty work was done and the mileage was 220+ miles. A law suit has been filed. Updated 02/24/06.
I was driving on a highway when car just stopped. I had to get out of the car and push it for it to start again. After 500 it stopped again and had to be towed away.
Vehicle is a 2001 s-500. Almost word for word the same issue(s) as odi id number : 10100807. Same car, same problems, same sentiment. Replacing fuses only results in flickering instrument cluster lighting, and even then the backlight is still non-functional. Gauge needles flicker as well, until they too go out completely. Fuses last only for a couple of days, whereupon the entire instrument cluster remains entirely black. Problem could be remedied simply by replacing faulty transistors, or redesigning an improperly laid-out instrument cluster, ie cooling the transistors much more adequately. This creates a tremendous safety risk by essentially creating an information black hole: the operator does not know his/her own speed, fuel level, if the parking brake is still on, if the directional signals are operational, if the check engine light is on, and other important information that mercedes is so keen on relaying only to the instrument cluster. The faulty instrument cluster has not yet created an accident, but it is only a matter of time until one of the other thousands of s-class owners runs out of gas on the highway, and gets into a collision all because he/she didn't know how much fuel they had.
While driving, I lost all electrical systems in my mercedes. Power steering, power brakes, lights, display, power windows etc.

This auto's command (communications) system (radio/cass/cell phone/navigation system) has failed, intermittantly eleven times over the past 2 years. Since I purchased this auto for monthly trips between maine and georgia, I really need safe and consistent communications and navigation systems to operate properly. I've now lost faith in the safe operation of this vehicle; purchased expressly for safe, long distance, all-weather, & dependable trips of 2,600 miles each month. While the factory has attempted to repair/replace the command system ten times, it has now failed for the eleventh time! this problem has been additionally documented in the past three issues of the star: Mercedes Benz owners club magazine.
