Mercedes Benz S Class owners have reported 7 problems related to wiring (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The fuel injection wiring harness has insulation that is badly cracked and flaking off causing fault codes and poor running. The body harness has cracked insulation as well. While this is an older car it is low miles and has spent its life stored indoors. I have a 1968 model amc car. The wiring is fine still. This was a serious design flaw from day one. It wouldn't be so bad if the replacement part was not so expensive - 750 dollars.
The engine wiring harness for the engine of a 1997 mercedes-benz s500 has disintegrated due to a manufacturing defect. The mercedes manufacturer seemed to have used an inferior an unsuitable insulation for the wires, which, for no reason other than time, deteriorate allowing the wires to short and prevent the vehicle from functioning as well as creating a hazardous situation such as fire in engine and etc. The mercedes manufacturer is aware of the defect but refuses to provide a solution or to assist in any way.

Mercedes s-class w220 (2000 and up)instrument cluster failed including spedometer, flashers, signal control, engine temperature, and other information critical to safe vehicle operation. Upon investigating it was determined that this is an extremely common problem caused by a series of defective transistors which the manuafacturer has since discontinued and replaced with a similar model. Inadequate heatseaking for the transistors coudl also explain the problem. This is particularly odd because the car has only been in production since 2000 and production is continuing strong. The cluster has 5 of these transistors, 3 of which are in series and go bad causing the described failure. The transistors cost about 50 cents each when purchased in bulk. . . Hardly justifying a $1600 repair. The siemens model: buz102s sipmos power transistor was replaced by the spd50n06s2-14 power transistor. This problem also causes the cars diagnostic computer and dash board controls to stop functioning. This could be dangerous. Not knowing car speed couldl also be very dangerous. Visitation (September 23, 05) update: the consumer indicated that there were no warnings prior to instrument cluster failure and that he couldn't see the gauges. The dealer indicated that the cluster has been superseded numerous times.

I am happy to be alive today. My 2000 model s-430 mercedes suddenly stopped in the middle of an 8 lane expressway. The first car behind, and all others in same lane managed to stop after burning some rubber . The other seven lanes on my right and left continued regular speed in excess of 80 miles an hour. A considerable time later, someone managed to stop the right lane traffic , and with the help of few sarmaritans, they pushed my car to right side of the road. After the shock of the possibilty of getting hit, and waiting over 2 hours for a wrecker service to take me to rbm of atlanta, I felt I was most lucky to be alive today. By the way, you may want to know, this brand new, $ 80. 000. 00 car in first year spent over 2 months in the shop for electronic defects of all sorts. To date , there have been at least 20 trips for the same electronic defect. If this is not a lemon , I want someone to tell me what lemon looks like.
