4 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Mercury Cougar

Failure Date: 07/30/2011

My 2000 Mercury Cougar suddenly started sputtering, bucking, and in less than two minutes stopped in traffic. It would crank but not start. I had to have it pushed off the road out of traffic. It was taken to a repair shop where the mechanic told me it was a faulty fuel pump system. When looking online for recalls or safety improvement campaigns, on the Ford website, they acknowledged that Cougars have had problems with the fuel pump system. The website did not specify any model year. When looking on another website and searching recalls, the 2000 Cougar had no recalls or safety improvement campaigns. What is interesting to me is that the other three model years, 1999, 2001, and 2002, all had recalls on the fuel pump system. Ford moter company issued an extended manufacturer's warranty on the fuel pump system for those three model years until December 2010. My husband and I both called Ford motor company regarding our problem and were told that we were sent a notice regarding the extended warranty and we should have had it fixed before the warranty ended. Our car was not covered under the warranty therefore we did not recieve a notice. They basically said sorry, you are on your own for the $600+ repair bill and have a great day. When a car is only made for four years and three of those four have a safety problem that causes the car to stop suddenly it stands to reason that the fourth model year made with the same parts would have the same problem.

5 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 Mercury Cougar

Failure Date: 06/07/2011

2002 v6 Mercury Cougar chugs and stalls out at or below half tank of gas. Engine light diagnostic read out indicates replacing fuel pump, regulator, pressure sensor, or O2 sensor. Have replaced fuel pump however issue remains. Called Ford regarding recall in Aug 2004, but am told that my VIN# was not affected by this recall. Reading the description of the recall sounds all too familiar though.

6 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Mercury Cougar

Failure Date: 07/19/2009

My car stalled while in the middle of a busy intersection while in motion. Later find out that I need a new fuel pump. Was not aware it was under recall. Paid to have it fixed in July of 2009. Repair shop failed to put my VIN, mileage, and correct year of vehicle on invoice resulting in not being able to get my money back from Ford. Recall was good through January 31, 2010. My car once again stalled while at a stop light sparks and small flames when attempting to start after stalling. Electrical problem, and Ford is doing nothing about it. I replaced the battery and still no crank or clicking. Also listed as a recall. Spend $651. 02 to have fuel pump fixed and now can't get my money back because repair shop did not fill out invoice correctly. Now will have to possibly pay over a $1,000. 00 to fix the electrical issue. . . When the fuel pump was fixed, the shop failed to secure the gas tank correctly causing fuel to pour out while driving at a rate of a gallon per minute. Ford is now doing everything they can to avoid paying me back for the recall services after I was informed by a Ford customer service rep that I would be paid back. I have been back and forth for weeks now to the dealership and I have been told over and over again with a new excuse everytime as to why they can not repay me. . .

7 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Mercury Cougar

Failure Date: 08/20/2008

The contact owns a 2000 Mercury Cougar. The contact stated that his extended warranty was cancelled on his fuel pump because the vehicle was reconstructed. When he placed a full tank of gasoline in the vehicle, the fuel gauge dial would not go past the halfway mark. The dealer stated that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. They further stated that the title was reconstructed because the vehicle was previously destroyed. Due to this, they would not perform any repairs on the vehicle. The failure mileage was 133,650.

8 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 Mercury Cougar

He drove the vehicle home and later called the dealer. The dealer advised him to bring in the vehicle and they made repairs at the cost of $697. The failure was identified as being included in NHTSA campaign id number 04v421000 (fuel system, gasoline). The failure could cause engine hesitation, loss of power, surging, and other similar symptoms. Over time, the filter may become sufficiently blocked and cause the engine to stall. The failure mileage was 84,000 and current mileage was 86,000. Updated 07/16/lj the bushings and clutch were worn. The fuel pump and fuel sender were replaced. The engine light was on. The dealer replaced a leaking intake. Updated 07/16/08.

9 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 Mercury Cougar

Failure Date: 01/11/2008

Purchased this used vehicle -- 3 days later, car would not start -- motor turned over, if was not getting gas. Brought gas to the car, it had only 1/4 of a tank, put more gas in, it eventually started. Took it for a diagnostic test -- fuel pump not functioning correctly. Recall 04n02 was issued for this model/yr car, not this vehicle VIN number, therefore Ford will not stand behind this car problem and pay to have it fixed.

One week later I took it back because it continued to do the same, they said they checked a wire to fuel pump and changed a spark plug, and here it is another week with the same symptoms.

While driving the vehicle @ 30 mph the car suddenly stalled out and I almost cause a very serious accident because the car would not steer nor brake. Ford has a recall on the 1999 Mercury Cougar replacement program 04n02 but Ford says my car is not included in this program. Please help.

16 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Mercury Cougar

Failure Date: 07/31/2006

I purchased a used 200 Mercury Cougar in 12/2005. The fuel has been diagnosed by festus Ford as defective. The fuel pump was replaced as part of recall #04v421000. I called Ford customer care 1-866-436-7332 to ask if there was anything that Ford could do to offset the cost of the repair/replacement and my request was rejected. It's apparent that there is something wrong with the Cougar fuel pumps. I report to Ford that I thought this was a safety issue, since this is causing my vehicle to lose power and/or surge. They did not seem to be concerned at all.

17 Fuel Pump problem of the 1999 Mercury Cougar

Failure Date: 06/01/2006

I would like to complain about my Cougar. I cannot pass the IL. Emissions tests, due to the fact that the O2 sensors are defective. My engine light is constantly on. I have had my car serviced for the engine light, alone, 8 different times. Eight! this is incredible. Also, my car makes a loud screeching noise when I attempt to start it. -if it starts at all. - I have had my starter replaced twice. Twice!!! this car is a lemon. Nothing but a lemon. How could Mercury sale such crap and get away with it. My drivers' license will be suspended because I cannot pass the emissions test. If I can even get my car to the testing facility. I have had the alternator changed, the fuel pump, the electrical wiring changed, sunroof, turning signal, even the radio was defective. I sincerely hope that there is a class-action lawsuit against Mercury, because I will be the first one in line to sue.

18 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 Mercury Cougar

Failure Date: 03/07/2006

I own a 2002 Mercury Cougar VIN 1zwft61l725610750. In 2/06 my car began to intermittently hesitate when accelerating. Over a few week's time, the problem worsened to the point that the car would hesitate, then surge ahead, and couldn't be controlled. On 3/7/06, I was driving on I-95 in s. Fla. , and my car hesitated and surged in rush hour traffic. The surging caused a near miss with the car ahead of me. The car sputtered and I pulled off to the side of the interstate. On the shoulder, the car backfired, then shut off. I turned off the ignition, waited 15 minutes, then restarted the car. The engine ran, so I continued on my way. Within 15 minutes, the hesitation and surging started again. At this point, I drove straight home. Along the way, the car shut off 3 more times. Once home, I contacted my dealer, maroone Lincoln Mercury in n. Palm beach, fla. The service advisor told me that my car was not covered under any recall, and I would have to pay for repairs. I then contacted Ford motor company who made note of my complaint and told me of a safety bulletin for the 2002 Mercury Cougar fuel delivery module. However, I was told my car would not be repaired under the safety campaign bulletin. I contacted a local repair shop, wynn performance in belle glade, fla. For their diagnosis. Wynn performance verified that my car was hesitating and surging and that a safety bulletin existed for my car's model year. Wynn performance obtained a genuine Ford motor company fuel delivery module and replaced the defective unit. The technician pointed out that the old module and the new unit had significant differences in design. I tested the car and was satisfied that it worked correctly. To this day, my car does not surge or hesitate. Replacing the fuel delivery module corrected the problem, but I incurred more than $400 in out-of-pocket expenses for the safety upgrade. I am upset that Ford motor company and maroone Lincoln Mercury disregarded my safety and ignored their bulletin.

19 Fuel Pump problem of the 1999 Mercury Cougar

Failure Date: 12/08/2005

I am the owner of a 1999 Mercury Cougar. I purchased the vechicle new and have maintained all service requirements. At this point, the vechicle still has less than 45,000 miles (I do not drive all that much). However, since purchasing this car I have had to replace twice the alternator and battery, all the brakes, tires, and now the fuel pump has gone out. I understand that there is a recall on the fuel pumps, so I contacted Ford, but they informed me that my Cougar is not in among those on the list. However, my car has the exact symptoms that are listed by Ford; it stalls and will not run. In Ford's statement, they indicate that they will replace the failed fuel pump, but they are not willing to do that for me. Becuase of this failed fuel pump situation, I have had to have my car towed twice and have been stuck in some very inclement winter weather situations. I am now facing a $640 fuel replacement bill which I do not feel that I should have to pay given the current recall. I have never before complained about what I consider to be excessive repairs, but this latest failure has me livid. I do hope that others do not face this same situtaion and that Ford will reconsider its position to not cover the cost of my fule pump replacement.

20 Fuel Pump problem of the 1999 Mercury Cougar

Failure Date: 11/22/2005

I was commuting to work in mountainous terrain and while traveling uphill, the car lost power and then the engine quit completely. I was barely able to roll the car out of the highway before another vehicle approached the blind curve from my rear and swerved to avoid the broken down car and myself. I conducted an internet search after finally getting the car restarted and returning to home that evening and discovered that Ford motor CO. Had initiated a program to alleviate the symptoms the car was experiencing. Although the car behaved exactly as described under the manufacturers description of potential problems(including surging, hesitation, loss of power, and engine stalling), I was told after contacting the selling dealer and Ford that my car did not qualify for any assistance because it fell outside of the production window of the vehicles they had identified as having similar problems. This problem has recurred 4 times since the initial incident while driving on inclined surfaces but I do not attempt to drive the car on the mountain roads. The extended coverage program 04n02 is the program I referred to when contacting both the dealer and Ford motor company. As a result of this, I am unable to use this car to commute to work and have resorted to the use of rental or borrowed vehicles.

Failure Date: 10/17/2005

The contact stated there was recall 04v4210000 concerning fuel pump failure for the year, make, and model of vehicle, but, this vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN. 25 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 Mercury Cougar

Failure Date: 03/10/2005

After all the problems with my 2001 Cougar I wish I would have made a better choice in what vehicle I bought. The one recall that they had on the fuel pump I had to have that replaced, but I am not sure they really fixed it because it still hesitated when I accelerating . The low coolant light on the dash went on in the winter time when I first started the car. After I driving a bit the light will just turn off. So how the am I suppose to know when there really was a coolant problem if the light just went on. Then, the transmission went out at 94,000 miles with no signs of it going out. I was driving on the highway at 70 mph when I pressed on the gas pedal and nothing happened, like the car was in neutral. I tried different gears and nothing. I was able to coast to the shoulder of the road and had to call a tow truck to bring the car home and cost $300. 00. I had to find a place to bring the car to get a new transmission which was at a Ford dealership. They said it would take about 3 days to have it done, and turned out taking 2 weeks because they didn't know how to put the correct transmission in the box. They sent two wrong transmissions before Ford finally got the correct transmission for the car to the shop. This cost me $3,235. 00. Transmissions failing at 94,000 miles was ridiculous considering all proper maintenance was done when it was needed. There were still other problems with the car, but I could not fit all the words on this form. I did not believe anything was done at all, and customer service from Ford was terrible. The next vehicle I buy most definitely will not be a Ford and probably not an american vehicle either. Word of mouth is very powerfully and people that I talk to about Cougar problems will never be buying a Ford. If only Ford would care a little and not be afraid to spend some money to make their customers a little more pleased with their purchase then maybe people wouldn't look down so much on Ford products.

26 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 Mercury Cougar

28 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 Mercury Cougar

Failure Date: 07/28/2004

6 months after I bought the car I noticed that after fueling that the fuel gauge still stayed on empty after a while it corrected itself but after that now everytime that I put fuel in the car it registers either empty or only half full. The dealership told me that Cougars are known for theri fuel pump problems. Upon further inspection of the car they stated that they could find nothing wrong and to watch and not overfill the tank. To this day the fuel gauge is still wrong. After that the paint on the hood of the car started peeling. I took it to the dealership and after some harsh words and weeks of waiting they took it in and repainted the hood which now is a slightly different color that the rest of the car. Then 6 months after that the car started hesitating on acceleration and would spit and splutter and quit in the middle of the road. I took it to the dealership and they put it on the machine and found that a component in the computer was out so they replaced it. Then one day as I was driving it my break pedal went almost all the way to the floor. I almost hit several cars trying to get it stopped I had it taken to a nearby garage and I had no break pads on the front or the back of the car also I had to have my rotors replaced( which is not covered by a warranty) however, there was no grinding no warning, nothing to indicate that a car with only 20,000 miles on it would have brake problems. After those were fixed I was driving to class one evening in heavy rush hour traffic and turned to into a parking lot my steering wheel immediately made this loud popping noise and locked to the left and sent me into a 360 degree spin into a crowded parking lot. I had the car towed to the dealership where it now sits unable to drive because the steering wheel and front wheels are locked to the left with no explanation of why it happened.

When the consumer arrived that afternoon to pick it up the consumer was told that the incorrect part was ordered and the vehicle had to kept overnight. The pump was finally replaced the next day and when the vehicle was pick the consumer indicated that she smell fuel inside the vehicle. The consumer was told that he smell would go away in a few days. The consumer felt that something wasn't right an took the vehicle to her independent mechanic. 2001 Mercury Cougar has stalled 5 times within a month and a half. Twice on the highway and 3 times idle. Car was completely shutting off without restarting and 2 computer chips were replaced due to Ford putting in a bad chip. Car is now stalling when going at slow speeds or stopped and has been in an independent shop 3 times within a 3 week period so the car is now stalling once a week. Brand new wires, throttle body, idle censor was replaced and it's still stalling. Spent a small fortune on rental cars, tow trucks and repairs. Ford's customer service said there was nothing that could be done. Will never ever buy an american car again!.

35 Fuel Pump problem of the 1999 Mercury Cougar

Failure Date: 04/29/2004

The car stalled in the middle of the street and engine could not be started. It had to be towed in to the nearest dealership. Diagnosis: fuel pump failure. Cost: $500. Two weeks later I found out that Mercury had a recall on fuel pumps, however my VIN number was not included in the recall. I suppose it's just a big coincidence that my car experienced the same exact symptoms and the fuel pump failed at the same time as the recall. Mercury to this date has not reimbursed me the $500.
