1997 Grand Marquis cruise control stop working. The brake light illuminated followed by the brake fluid leaking out.

The contact stated vehicle caught on fire. The vehicle was turned off and parked for eleven hours. The fire department report concluded the fire started around the vehicle speed control:cruise control. A police report was taken, also, pictures were available. The vehicle was totaled.

The contact stated while driving with the cruise control set on 63 mph and going up a small hill, cruise control sped the vehicle up to 71 mph. He had to take the vehicle out of cruise control to slow the vehicle down. He felt this was a safety issue. The vehicle has been taken to the dealership twice concerning this problem. The contact owns a 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis. While driving 60 mph, the cruise control would not activate. As of October 1, 2007, the dealer had not inspected the vehicle to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer stated that the VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign id number 07v336000 (vehicle speed control). The failure mileage was 50,000 and current mileage was 72,000.

While driving, and coming to a stop (braking) the vehicle surged forward. The consumer has taken the vehicle into the dealer. The dealer stated the vehicle was performing the way it should. Please provide any further information. Also, please provide the vehicle identification number. The consumer stated had a 2001 Grand Marquis that did the same thing numerous times. After investigating consumer had cruise control disabled. No further problem.

The consumer was experiencing cruise control failure. When driving the cruise control will inadvertently come on and go off.

The engine revved in full throttle when the gear shifter was shifted into drive from park; resulting in a rear end collision. This occurred while in stop and go traffic in the car wash line. The repair shop failed to determined what caused the failure, but the consumer feels due through their own research that it was caused by the electrical system/cruise control.

: the contact stated while parked with the ignition on; the vehicle suddenly lurched forward without warning. The brakes were depressed and the ignition was turned off, which stopped the vehicle after it traveled 60 ft. This had occurred on numerous occasions. Also, while traveling 60 mph with the cruise control engaged, the vehicle sped uncontrollably to 80 mph. The brakes were depressed, but did not disengage the cruise control. Also, while traveling 40 mph, the vehicle accelerated suddenly, causing the contact to drive the vehicle into a ditch to avoid an accident. The contact sustained a bruise to the shoulder. The manufacturer was contacted, and provided no assistance since the vehicle was out of warranty. The vehicle was taken to a service dealer twice, where the cruise control was replaced, but the problem persisted.

While driving 70 mph vehicle stalled. Cruise control was engaged. After waiting for a little while the vehicle was restarted. Vehicle continued to run for a while before it stalled again. Vehicle was towed to a repair shop, and nothing could be found.

While driving on with the speed control on , the engine abruptly stopped. The ignition key was turned off, which inactivated the speed control, and the engine was started with no problem. The consumer stated there was a smell hot burning wires.

Vehicle was leaking fluid out of the cruise control switch wire, which could have started a fire. Manufacturer was contacted by owner.

Consumer stated that while driving came to a red light and vehicle took off. The more he applied the brakes the faster vehicle went. He and his wife narrowly escaped a collision. Consumer took feet off the brakes, and placed the vehicle in neutral, which caused it to slow down. Then, he coasted to the side of the road. Consumer called the dealer, who told him to call a tow truck. Consumer had vehicle towed to the dealer. After inspecting the vehicle dealer told consumer that they never heard of this problem with this type of vehicle. However, he was told by another dealer that it might have been the cruise control kicking in when it was not suppose to. Consumer was very concerned because he and his wife were nearly killed.

Braking lights began to malfunction, then the cruise control did so too. There were no consequenes due to this malfunctions, untill the car caught on fire. The front driver side tire begain to catch on fire and so did only the front left side of the car.

While driving under raining conditions cruise control was not working. Instrument lights panel was off, and windshield worked intermittently. Dealer replaced two computers in the electrical system , but problem still occurring.

Cruise control moves gas pedal rapidly down and back up at a rate of 1 to 2 occilations per second, at times car can be felt to jerk back and forth. Dealer has made many attempts to correct the issue under warrenty but now is being told that Ford will no longer pay for repairs. I feel this may be a safety issue as I do not know when the car may accelerate out of controll.

Cruise control was set at 65mph on the vehicle. Cruise control would not disengage manually or when brake pedal was applied. Speed increased to 75mph before emergency brake was applied to stop vehicle. Mercury dealer was notified.

Vehicle will not idle, consumer has to press accelerator to keep vehicle idling. Dealer replaced idle control valve two months ago. At this time part needs to be replaced again. Valve was first replaced in 2000.

Vehicle started down shifting while traveling on wet pavement up a slight incline with the cruise control engaged. Accelerator pedal went to the floor. Consumer tried to disengage cruise control by pumping the brakes, but the car began to slip and engine began to race. Please provide further details.

Whenever using cruise control brakes go out. Once consumer slid and landed in a ditch.

While cruise control is activated it will turn off unexpectedly. In one case trottle opened and driver had to turn off vehicle, which almost caused a crash. The cruise control failed ten times.

The caller said her car burned up in 2000. Now she is finding out about the investigation into the cruise control fires. She believes that the car should be included. At the time she was told to call the insurance company, they said to call manufacturer, and she was getting the run around. She saw on cnn and the newspaper about the current problem they are having and wanted someone to help her. There is a fire report. The vehicle fire was contained to the engine compartment and dash area.
