Vehicle Speed Control Problems of Mercury Grand Marquis - part 1

On [xxx] I was driving this recently purchased Grand Marquis . On [xxx] here in san antonio around ten at night I hit the brakes and something under the hood compartment blew up and it cocked the car . I was trapped inside and when I finally was able to get my seatbelt released I had to break the window with my head . The previous week I reached out to Ford and they told me they would address the issue and that they would call me back and that was to no avail. I reached out to Ford and at first I was told I would be helped and then a man came on the phone yelling that my vehicle . I need help with resol this issue . My car is totaled and I’m hurting and it’s because of a car with recalls that are a fire haz and dangerous to be put on the road thank you and god bless . Was not under any recalls the car had been parked for over ten years beca when the orig owner bought it it had issues with the cruise control and the brakes and the engine and the lights . I investigated about and hazards the car was demonstrating and upon further consideration my instinct told me this car was defected and was a big problem waiting to happen information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

This is a serious safety hazard that could result in death or injury. If I hadn’t escaped in time, I would have been killed. I am urging the NHTSA to investigate this defect and take immediate action to remove these vehicles from the road. Others may not be as lucky. This issue is life-threatening, especially because the fire started while the vehicle was in motion. These vehicles must be recalled and removed from use before more people are injured or killed.

I was driving I pressed the cruise control to set it but the vehicle kept accelerating and as I was pressing on the brake it wouldn’t disengage it kept accelerating I kept pressing the brake frantically and thank god it disengaged. . I never touched the cruise control again.

I started Mercury with foot on break like normal. Shifted into reverse. Car accelerated backwards at full speed. Brakes did not stop car. Attempted to shift into neutral but went into drive instead. Car accelerated forward at full speed with my foot still on break. Car hit metal post and tree knocking them down and dragging the tree 50 to 60 feet before stopping with my foot still on the break. Car had stopped accelerating. I turned off the ignition. This unintended acceleration had happened before. Two different dealers attempted to fix the problem. Both of them thought they had been successful but it happened again. Previously, applying the brakes stopped the car, but not this time. Someone could have been injured severely or killed.

?yrs. Ago while backing out of parking space at calaveras lumber, after shifting into reverse, & removing my foot from the brake; the engine appeared to receive a huge burst of fuel which shot me backward like a rocket slamming my vehicle into and wedging it under the frame of a pickup truck parked in the same lot. I am glad I was parked and had my foot on the brake prior to this unit or system malfunction otherwise the injuries could easily have been fatal on the highway. I think this defect may be a contributing factor to the car dying recently while on my way to a wedding reception in roseville, which left me stranded after dark for 41/2hrs and 71/2hrs. 2days later. I have not been able to start vehicle since and mechanics unable to diagnose why the engine is fuel starved when system parts tested appear to be in good working order. Something seems to be shutting off power or preventing power to the fuel pump and it is not the inertia switch, relays, fuses etc. . Components have been previously inspected by numerous others including dealer. No recognizable alert/warning prior to incidents!.

While driving, I came to a stop light and suddenly, the car idled high and lurched forward while my foot was on the brake, luckily, I was stopped well away from the vehicle in front of me. The car idled high and seemed to have a mind of it's own. I took the back roads home and backed into our garage. The car smelled hot, and I though I had smoked my brakes, trying to keep control of it. Later that night, I told my husband about the car's actions and he did not believe me, though my daughter who was with me at the time confirmed that the car had indeed accelerated on it's own. My husband started the car and it did idle high and get hot once again, although only parked with no one in it. He thought he knew what the problem was and we turned off the car and closed the hood and went inside to order the part. A few minutes later, we heard a couple popping noises and I opened the door that led into the garage from the basement. Smoke was coming into the house and my husband said that a flame shot over my head. The car had caught on fire under the closed hood. We called the fire department, but by the time they arrived, a good portion of the basement was on fire. The house was a total loss. My husband though that the pvc elbow under the hood was sticking closed, so that is the part we were going to order. Unsure, if that was the real cause or not. The car did not have any warning lights or any other indications of a problem before this incident.

I was driving in town and several times when I slowed down to stop at a stop sign or corner, after braking my car accelerated by itself. The engine revved up and made the car jump forward. I had to slightly release the brake snd brake harder to stop and avoid going into the intersection.

The vehicle accelerated on it's own while stopped with the brake depressed. Once in a parking lot waiting for a spot to clear. The second time while sitting at a red light. I held the brake down as hard as I could while the car did a burn out and I noticed the traction light come on. It then just went back to normal. This is very dangerous. Someone in front of the car (another driver or pedestrian) can seriously get hurt or killed.

This has been a dangerously recurring engine accelerating problem while at rest or moving/coming to a stop on streets or highways but always while attempting to brake or hold in place. The brakes won't stop it, only turning off the ignition and restarting works. Barely avoided several accidents, so far. My Ford dealer has inspected the systems and my foot placements with out finding a problem or a solution. There are over 30 complaints regarding this problem in your database, some with serious injuries. After all these years, how can this issue be escalated before there is a fatality? please respond ASAP.

Vehicle headlights work intermittently . Cruse control does not reset or turn on when supposed to. This is also an intermittent problem, sometimes resetting, and sometimes not. Headlights would sometimes not turn on when driving unless pulling turn signal arm toward steering wheel and holding. High beams only would work.

Unintended accel. Sometimes when I step on the brake the car accelerates instead. At first I thought it was me and my big feet. After some internet research I find it may be common as the 2005 gets older. I asked if brke pedal could be adjusted so that there was no interference with the gas pedal, I was told no. I had the master cylinder replaced, minimum improvement. One day I "shot" across us19 in ross township when I braked. Instead of stopping at a red light, I kept going until I cleared traffic in both directions ruining 2 wheels & tires - subsequently repaired. The car now sits in our driveway, after some other occurrences without incident. I'm leary of driving it & don't want to sell it & get someone injured or killed. Fortunately I have a 2004 sable which I drive daily with no such problems! ideas?.
