Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System Problems of Mercury Grand Marquis

The contact owns a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph the power steering failed to function. The owner stated that he felt "stiffness" in the steering wheel making the vehicle hard to steer. He took the vehicle to a local repair shop and replaced the power steering pressure switch, and added power steering fluid. The repairs have corrected the failure. The failure mileage was 16,819. Consumer lost control at 35 mph on a gravel road, vehicle hit a tree, then bursted into flames. Consumer suffered minor head injuries, vehicle was totalled. Cause of fire unknown at this time. While driving the consumer had met another driver going south in the middle and tried to miss the other vehicle and lost control. The consumer ran into the woods and hit two small trees and the vehicle then caught fire, which started under the wheel of the drivers side. The consumer went into the windshield and injured her forehead/head and neck.

While driving 65 mph started to change lanes, and noticed another vehicle in same lane, and swerved back to the right. As soon as she turned wheel to right she lost control of vehicle, it went across 2 lanes of traffic to left, and hit a tractor trailer head-on . Airbags did deploy. Consumer and passenger sustained minor injuries. Consumer stated it felt like vehicle was on ice. Prior to this, when driving over a bump, vehicle was hard to control. Insurance will send an investigator, vehicle was totalled. Consumer stated that the amount of movement she made to return to the other lane was not extreme, however the front of the vehicle spun to the right causing her to strike the side of a flatbed tractor trailer.

While traveling could not keep vehicle centered to road while steering. Dealer has been contacted. No positive feedback while going straight, vehicle tends to wander, no "on-center" feeling. .

Power steering fails intermittently.

Vehicle loses power steering when driving at any speed, automatically steers easy and 25mph and lower. Dealer contacted and worked on vehicle four times, and the problem has not changed and still exists. Provide further information.

While driving on highway steering went completely out.

At time when driving at highway speed steering power assist worked intermittently, causing poor vehicle steering control/ steering become very difficult, resulting in vehicle pulling to either left or right . Consumer has contacted dealer. Dealer has disconnected the speed sensor which corrected the problem.
