On 11/14/18 I received a "regional program 13r01" letter concerning my vehicle. It indicates "in states where heavy road salt is used, severe corrosion of the joints on the lower intermediate steering shaft can result in a steering column separation, leading to a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash" (see attachment). On 11/14/18 I visited a Ford dealer for inspection, and they were unwilling to perform the necessary repairs listed in the letter (see attachment). On 11/15/18 I phoned Ford motor company customer relation center at 866-436-7332 listed in the letter. I spoke with a representative named "len". I informed len I currently reside in California, however I may be relocating with the vehicle to the washington d. C, maryland region. I requested the repairs be made as a one time good faith gesture. Len informed me the "regional program 13r01" was voluntary, and to be implemented on vehicles at Ford motor company's discretion. Len was unwilling, and unable to offer any assistance. I understand Ford motor company is look out for their bottom line. However, it feels like they're doing so while putting my family's safety at risk. I would like to request any assistance, you are authorized to provide. Lower steering column corrosion causing stiffness when vehicle is in motion and stationary. Mercury does not list this model year as a recall. Previousl had to replace same part on 2003 crown victoria (same part sister model) same story that it wasn't on recall list for much newer cars.

Contacted framingham Ford and fmc to express my concern for steering safety as related to the safety recall repairs. Framingham Ford responded the recall & repair warrantyy had expired and instructed me to contact fmc for authorization to inspect/repair the steering assembly. Cas 104 76461 d4y3v8 documents my 2 phone contacts dated 9/ 2 & 11/ 23,16 with fmc customer relationship center to express my steering safety concerns regarding the recall 13s08 repairs. Each time the customer service representative stated 1) repair warranty for recall 13s08 had expired 2))Ford motor CO unable to offer any assistance for current steering inspection/repairs 3) there are no active recalls on my vehicle 4) I should save "out of pocket repair expenses" in the event that new recall is issued Nov 22, 2016 vehicle was stopped at the intersection of cemetery st & pond st natick, MA 01760. I turn right onto pond st travel 25 yards @20mph when I lost complete steering control the steering wheel spun freely in both directions with no response to change vehicle direction. I applied brakes to stop vehicle, placed it into park, turned on the hazard lights, and called natick police department npg log document 16-2154 marbady gulf service called by npd to tow the disabled vehicle loss of steering was due to upper steering shaft completely separating from the steering wheel. I reported the incident to Ford motor CO (see above nov23,16). Who continues not to accept my safety concern or take responsibility for the steering safety defect.
I was at a stop sign. When I got ready to turn right, my steering wheel turned but my tires didn't. I had it towed to my home and then towed to a local Ford company. I was told by an employee there that my car was not approved for the recall repair because of some other damages. The steering gear and column went out as well. I was told that I had to buy the parts to fix the car.

My wife and 4 year old daughter were struck by a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis on 04/21/16. They were driving in eastbound traffic in a 2008 Nissan ultima and the driver of the Mercury Grand Marquis was driving in westbound traffic. The driver of the Grand Marquis lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the vehicle of my wife and daughter. The driver died at the scene of the accident. My wife sustained substantial damage to her right leg and my daughter sustained substantial trauma to her skull, neck, back, spinal cord, throat, and intestines. My daughter is paralyzed on the right side and the doctors say her prognosis is unknown. She has a tracheostomy and is unable to speak. I have read numerous complaints online regarding sudden loss of steering with 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis vehicles. Ford issued a recall for the steering column for 2005 through 2011 Mercury Grand Marquis cars. The recall was due to excessive corrosion of the steering column, which leads to loss of control of the vehicle while driving. Ford has not recalled 2003 and 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis despite these vehicles having the same steering column. The memphis police detective closed the case last week and this was before I discovered the steering column recall. I have called the detective multiple times, and he is not returning my calls. This matter needs immediate attention.
I was traveling on northfield road in bedford heights ohio and turned right on to the drive way that leads to wal-mart. The steering wheel snapped completely loose spinning around. I lost control of the steering and the car crashed into a curb before I could apply the brakes. This occurred approximately an hour after I picked up my car from liberty Ford dealership for repairs done in response to recall number 13s08 - steering column shaft and customer satisfaction program number - 14n01. (lighting control module).

Definitely was dangerous and accident could have occurred. Total cost of replacement was $882. 55. Vehicle was repaired at sarat Ford, 245 springfield st. , agawam, MA 01001, 413-786-0430. It is my understanding that there was a safety review for this problem that was initiated in the fall of 2014. What was the end result of the review? do you anticipate a recall for this issue? thank you, ronald e. Sheehan.

I am writing to you concerning a letter I recently received from the Ford motor company concerning safety recall number 13s08 / NHTSA recall 13v385 – steering column shaft for my 2009 Grand Marquis, vehicle id#xxxxx. . I received the first notice of this recall October 2013. I called rich Ford located at 8601 lomas blvd ne, albuquerque, nm 87112, phone number (505) 292-0000 on November 1, 2013 to make an appointment on November 5, 2013, to have the work done. On November 4th, I received a call asking if I drove the car in michigan. Told her I bought the car used and did not know its history. I was advised by rich Ford that the recall did not apply to my car because we did not live in a high corrosion area. After receiving this phone call, I contacted Ford motor company by email on November 4th concerning my conversation with rich Ford. I received a reply to my email from teena a representative of the Ford customer relationship center (crc) who instructed me to contact service advisor alison at rich Ford to arrange for my vehicle to be inspected. I contacted rich Ford and took my vehicle in for the repairs. I was told it would be 2 to 3 days to have the work done. About 4 hours later I received a call from rich Ford informing me that the work had been performed. A year later, I received another letter from Ford motor company informing me that I needed to get the recall work performed. I went into rich Ford to discuss this, and they told me that the work had been performed. Last month I again received a letter from the Ford motor company saying that I needed to have the safety recall work performed. I went to the national highway transportation safety administration and performed a search on my vehicles VIN and the result was a recall still being open for this repair. Is Ford motor company responsible for having this recall competed or not?.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician diagnosed that the steering column holster had failed. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacture was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 88,232 and the current mileage was 128,000.
Vehicle was coming off of a highway exit ramp doing around 40-45 mph and in the middle of this turn the driver lost his control of his steering causing the vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic almost causing a head on collision. Upon inspection of vehicle found that a sterring column shaft wich is only held in place by a plastic retainer and consist of 4 clips, 2 of the clips were broken causing the column shaft to slide apart and have loss of steering. So far the only fix from Ford is to sell you a new sterring column 7w1z-3c529-a this part is designed the same way as the old part was. This issue could cause a fatal accident, I am a mechanic with a goverment agency with many of these vehicles in our fleet. I urge you to please look into this issue and ask for a recall with these vehicles before a life is lost!.
The vehicle was being hard to steer and turn - told it to the dealer and was declared unsafe to be on road. Had to get the steering column changed to the turn of $679. 00 - still have defective part and receipt for the work that was done.
The contact owns a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis. The contact was completing a turn at approximately 5 mph when the steering wheel became extremely hard to turn. The contact checked the power steering fluid but the fluid was at the proper level. The contact then added a lubricant spray to the steering column. The failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired or diagnosed. The manufacturer was not informed of the issue. The failure mileage was 53102.
The contact owns a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis. The contact stated that there was a constant movement in the steering column. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and they were unable to locate the problem. There was a voluntary recall issued by the manufacturer pertaining to the lower and upper intermediate steering shaft for the Grand Marquis model years 2005-2011 but not the 2004 model year. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000.
Turning the steering wheel became hard with uneven "catches" (not smooth motion) when turning left or right and also turning the steering wheel back to "center". Steering linkage from steering column to the steering "box" appears to be binding up. This makes turning the steering wheel sluggish and jerky. Power steering fluid and belts were ok.
The contact owns a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis. The contact was completing a turn at approximately 5 mph when the steering wheel became extremely hard to turn without warning. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 81,244 and the current mileage was 90,000.
The lower retainer slipped out (retainer tabs are cracked)of the column disconnecting the steering wheel from the lower steering shaft. Obviously could not control direction of automobile - was able to stop without an event. The new assembly 'Ford part number 7w1z-3c529-a' looks to be made as the one currently in my automobile. This will allow the same scenario to happen again! I might not be so lucky the next time! I hope the replacement assembly ?Ford part number 7w1z-3c529-b? corrects this problem for our law enforcement safety. Please correct this defect for the standard models. I am requesting a review and resolve by Ford motor corporation paying to correct this serious defect. Thanks for attention to this matter. [xxx] p. S. My automobile is in the service department of team Ford of navasota, texas. There phone number is 936-825-2225 information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. On 08/18/2008 my mother took her vehicle to sunnyvale Lincoln Mercury dealership [408] 732-7000[she purchased the vehicle there] because she was having problems getting the transmission to go in gear using the gear shift handle on the steering colomn. The dealership [invoice 24804, gabriel medina] said the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle drove o. K. It was just hard to go from park to drive. My mother is 86 years old and lives by her self. I feel strongly that she was taken for a ride and cheated out of $2,611. 93. She was never told as to why the transmission needed to be replaced, she drives a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis with 17,352 miles on it. All oil changes and service work was done at the dealership from day one. Now the transmission is missing. Her warranty coverage for the transmission is her receipt from the dealership. There was never a problem with the shifting of the transmission once she got the gear shift handle to go to drive. So, if there is a problem with the linkage from the steering column to the transmission, why did the transmission have to be replaced?.
The occupants (male driver, female passenger) were driving during daylight hours back home from an appointment. As the vehicle approached a curve the driver was unable to turn the steering wheel to any extent to hold his lane in the curve. The vehicle crashed through a guard rail and came to rest in a field. The driver sustained bumps & bruises. The passenger sustained a broken sternum and back pain. The car was a complete loss (totaled) as determined by the insurance company. When the recent gm recall occurred I checked the internet regarding Ford/Mercury products. Mercury had a recall for 2005-2011 vehicles for faulty steering columns that could lead to accidents. However, there were multiple reports from 2004 owners with the same issues. Therefore, I didn't to submit this incident to the ntsb.
Consumer stated there was a rattling noise coming from the engine when cold, dealer informed consumer the timing gear needed to be replaced, also the dashboard vibrated, however dealer stated nothing was wrong, the trim panel was loose on the door, the left front door closed too hard, the vehicle would lean to the left and there was a noise coming from the front of the vehicle when turning a corner, dealer replaced the front frame supports, the instrument cluster was scratched, the steering column trim was replaced, the radio had a poor reception, there was a pulsation coming from the brakes, however the dealer could not duplicate the problem.
