1 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 09/08/2025

My wife has a 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis. This vehicle has what I believe is an extremely unsafe placement of the brake and accelerator pedals. The pedals are extremely close together, closer than I have ever seen on any other vehicle. My wife has depressed the accelerator while pressing the brake pedal on more than one occasion. We went recently for an oil change. The technician pressed the accelerator while pressing the brake pedal while putting the vehicle into reverse. The vehicle lunged into the parking lot. Fortunately, there were no vehicles behind my vehicle. If the technician had been shifting from neutral into drive, he would have driven into the building. The technician said that he has had similar experiences with Ford vehicles and that one of his relatives has a Ford and that this is a frequent experience with that vehicle. I am a disabled veteran with a below knee amputation of the right leg. I have had no problem driving vehicles before this one. I have stopped driving this vehicle because I believe it is a crash waiting to happen. I have asked numerous people to sit in the vehicle and see if they feel that the pedals are too close together. To date, all have said that they feel that the pedals are too close together and that they would not drive the vehicle in question because they also feel that this vehicle and no doubt other Ford vehicles with this pedal arrangement are crashes waiting to happen. I request that NHTSA look into the pedal arrangement of this vehicle and all Ford vehicles as I believe this arrangement is a safety hazard that is on the highways of America and may have contributed or directly caused numerous crashes since at least 2005.

9 Service Brakes problem of the 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 06/07/2023

Brakes: the dashboard brake warning lights are illuminated most of the time. 1. The abs warning light is illuminated. 2. The brake warning light is illuminated also. The Ford dealership service dept cannot fix it saying this is intermittent and attributed it to a loose wire connection located behind the left driver kick panel. So far brakes work irregardless of brake warning lights illumination. You tube videos offer no solution and clearly state vehicles with brake warning lights should not be driven. If my state required a motor vehicle inspection, this car would not pass inspection. Please help resolve this situation.

10 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 01/24/2023

An SUV crashed into an apple store in hingham mass. The driver told police his foot became stuck to the gas pedal. More likely his foot became hooked under the brake pedal as he tried to quickly shift his foot from the gas pedal up and to the left onto the brake pedal. This has happened to me several times after accelerating and then having to make a 'panic' stop. I had to quickly wiggle-foot from under to the top of the brake pedal. Brake pedals should be changed from a t shaped to a 7 shaped configuration. This would eliminate the hook. T configuration-the 'stem' is attached under the center of the brake pedal 7 configuration-the 'stem' is attached under the right edge of the brake pedal.

Car returned to normal operation as soon as I got it stopped. Over the course of several months the engine seemed to rev up while the brakes were applied for a stop. On July 29,2013 I took the car to a reliable service center and asked tor an analysis of what the cause could be. Analysis result indicated that the throttle body assembly was the problem. A new assembly was installed, and I was informed that Ford has a bulletin on that particular part on 2006 Grand Marquis. The mechanic felt that a recall should be issued for safety reasons.

The engine did not slow down until until I turned off the ignition. After leaving the engine off for around two minutes, I restarted the engine and it resumed running at around 500 rpm. My 23 year old son was seated next to me and verrified that nothing was touching the accelerator while the engine was revving at 2,000 rpm and that both of my feet were on the brake. The engine has revved when I applied the brake at least seven other times; however, the revving stopped after one or two seconds. I have taken the car to a Ford dealer three times for this problem; however, they have not been able to find the cause of the problem.

29 Service Brakes problem of the 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 04/29/2012

I was coming to a stop when the brake pedal started vibrating and going lower and lower to the floor and the car did not stop resulting in an accident. I was told by the Ford mechanic that the computer tests did not show any problem with the antilock system but I think there is a problem when you apply your brakes and the car does not stop. I have also talked to a number of people some of them who work on cars etc. . And found out that this is not an uncommon problem. Furthermore, it happens a lot and on all types of vehicles with antilock systems. I was told that this can happen on and off which is why it is hard to detect. I was lucky in the fact that I was going slow and nobody was hurt, but what if that had been a different ending and it had been a serious accident? I have never been in an accident before and I resent the fact that I was not at fault for this one, the brakes did not work!!!!!.

On January 26 I applied the brakes at around 60 miles per hour and the motor again accelerated for one or two seconds. I continued to press the brakes, the motor slowed down and the car eventually slowed. It sounded like pressing the accelerator down hard to pass another car on a two lane road.

31 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 10/27/2010

On October 27, 2010, my wife was driving with me in the car and she started to brake for a red light. She was going about 30 miles per hour. As soon as she applied the brake, the engine accelerated and she had to use a large amount of braking pressure to stop the car. As soon as the car stopped, she took her foot off the brake and the engine returned to idle. Yesterday, I was driving the car at approximately 55 mile per hour and started to move into the passing lane when the traffic light ahead turned red. I applied the brake and the same thing happened. I had to apply a large amount of pressure on the brake peddle in order to stop the car while the engine raced on. As soon as the car stopped, the engine returned to idle and the problem was over. Yesterday, I took the car to the dealership where it was purchased and they kept the car overnight to run various tests. They found nothing. I picked the car up this afternoon and am going to now take it to another dealer for inspection.

34 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 05/19/2009

Brake and gas pedal to close together when applying brakes also hit gas has happened many times almost requires a conscious effort to avoid this problem.

35 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis

Failure Date: 01/14/2009

When parking a newly acquired used 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis at idle speed in a local shopping center, the engine accelerated and the harder I pressed the brake the faster the engine ran. To the extent the traction control activated and the wheels spun in place. The only way I prevented crashing into three parked was to shift the transmission into neutral with the engine racing. What apparently happened was my foot was not centered on the brake pedal and the pedal traveled to the point where I was also pressing on the accelerator. Evidently the travel distance of the brake pedal was so long I pressed on the accelerator pedal at the same time. I took the car to a Mercury dealer and was told this was a common problem, but he could not correct it because the brake and accelerator pedals were operating as designed. The dealers technician reported that my complaint was that the pedals seemed to close together. This may be true, but the problem in my mind is the travel distance of the brake pedal. I was also told Ford has not as yet issued a solution to this safety problem.
