I drove my 2008 Mercury Mariner to the gas station last week and the warning light came on reading power steering sensor assist fault. I contacted the local Ford dealership, I brought my car in to the service department. They diagnosed the steering sensor needed replaced, so they ordered the part and installed the new sensor. The dealership notified me that the sensor was not the issue, and that I actually need to replace the steering column and housing unit. I was originally quoted for the sensor & labor $779, which they were not going to charge me for since it was an incorrect diagnosis. But, to replace the steering column & housing I was now quoted $2100. 00. I had noticed on web site searches that there is recalls for steering issues on 2008 Mercury Mariner. I entered my VIN number and nothing is coming up, I also questioned the dealership about reading the numerous complaints and also asked about if there were any recalls for my vehicle, I was told there were none. I just can't fathom my issue has gone from $779 to $2100 on a sensor issue to a replacement of the steering column and housing. I'm hoping for some results by submitting this complaint. Thank you.
Tl the contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. While driving 40 mph, the steering wheel seized and the steering assist fault warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that it was a known failure and the steering column or sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 190,000.
Power steering assist module stoped working for no reason while I was driving. Many other complaints with this problem my mechanic is telling me it is a 50% chance I may have to replace the entire steering column.

Had minor steering issues and found I had a recall on it for the power steering. Took it to seelye wright of kalamazoo and they reprogrammed it. Within two weeks of this the steering wheel was jumping all over the place when stopped and would pulsate. This problem was not there before I took it in. I called them and they told me they didn't have time to see me and that they were all booked up until after the new year, etc. Essentially shooing me away. I later did make an appointment and they found that I need a new steering column, which is included in the recall, however they told me that my recall was closed. ? this didn't make sense to me since I am still having issues and now I need a new steering column? I am being forced to drive this vehicle with broken steering that should be covered by the recall. I have been taking this vehicle back and forth to work and taking my kids to school in the morning. I feel like Ford and even more so seelye should make this right. I am driving a vehicle that is a danger to myself and others because the recall was not properly fixed. Seelye closed the recall early and now I am being stuck with fords mistake. Update: called Ford and they gave me a case number ca11743787, and told me to take the car in to get fixed. When I showed up to get the car fixed I ran into the "closed" recall problem again. Now I am on the phone with Ford waiting an answer to see if they will actually honor the recall and fix it. Ford is not choosing to honor the recall since the dealership closed it without it being fixed correctly.
My power steering went out and on the dash it said "power steering assist fault". I took it to the Ford dealership and they said the torque sensor went out and the electric steering column has to be replaced. There was a recall on the torque sensor in 2014, recall 14s05, and their solution was to do a software update instead of replacing the steering column. When I called Ford's corporate office about this they said they have not decided to pay for the steering column to be replaced. I am filing this complaint because the solution to the recall did not fix the problem because the torque sensor still failed and Ford should be responsible. I know there is an ongoing investigation about this issue and hopefully Ford will do the right thing and reimburse everyone that has had to pay for this to be replaced.
Received Ford recall #14s05 in July of 2014, for a "loss of electric power steering assist" in affected vehicles. The recall notice indicated that Ford would perform a "software update", or, "replace affected components for free of charge". Took my vehicle to a nearby Ford dealership, had the recall "software update" performed on my vehicle. After the "software update" was performed on my vehicle, my vehicle suffered a complete loss of power steering assist, requiring the replacement of the entire steering column. This was the exact reason Ford had issued recall #14s05 in the first place and the exact components Ford said it would replace as part of recall #14s05. Ford has since refused to pay for, or, reimburse me for the cost of this repair under the premise that the "software update fixed the power steering assist defect". As a result, Ford continues to perpetuate increased risk of accidents and subsequent injury to owners of the affected vehicles.
The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. While attempting to turn right onto a major highway, the power steering suddenly malfunctioned and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column and housing were faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was previously repaired in August of 2014 per NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 55,000.
The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The vehicle was repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering); however, while driving approximately 20 mph, the power steering warning indicator illuminated and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact pulled over, powered the vehicle off and back on, and the steering returned to normal. The failure recurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000.
My parents purchased a 2008 Mercury Mariner this last spring, and just started to notice that the electric power steering is cutting in and out. We took it to our local garage who diagnosed the problem (error code that came up was b1342-2f) and recommended we replace the steering column. Since that is a large expense ($800) I decided to do some research and called the local Ford dealer. They looked up our VIN and told me that there was a recall on the electric power steering and that the work for the recall on the power steering was already done. (Ford's recall number for this is 14s05) my question is since we are experiencing the same failure (meaning the fix didn't seem to last) is there any recourse for us to have Ford fix the problem now? also, how long are these 'fixes' supposed to last? the date the recall was published by NHTSA is 2014-06-05, and we are only in September of 2015. I was thinking that a recall fix should last longer than a little over a year. Is NHTSA in the process of reviewing this issue?.
I had taken my vehicle in for the recall #14s05, in 2014; it was fixed in a matter of 2 hours. After that my steering was very flexible and very loose, which I thought I would have to get used to. Then within a few months the steering column started to tremble while in park or with applied brake. I thought it was front end issues, which I took to the shop and found nothing wrong. A month went by and while driving on the highway on March 9, 2015 going about 60mph with my 5 year old great niece in the car, the power steering went out. It took all my strength to keep it from crashing. I noticed on the dashboard that it read “power steering assist fault”. Immediately I thought to myself; I took this in for the recall, why is this happing. I made it to a safe place and called the Ford dealer and explain everything to them. They said that they wouldn’t know if it is related or not until they run a diagnostic. Later that next day they call and said that it is not related to the software that was replace, which I disagree, and they quoted me a large amount to fix. I told them that it is Ford responsibility because I feel that it was related to the recall. I could had died and my great niece as well. This is not acceptable. I had to pay for tow and diagnostic and the problem still not fix and I still feel strongly that its Ford responsibility. When a recall is preformed and the problem still happed then it’s no accuse or denying that it is indeed a recall issue. This has cause mental stress, loss of wages, mental stress due to avoiding an accident and keeping me and my great niece out of danger. This issue needs to be address and fixed, before something like this happens to someone else. Whether or not the recall was done it did not perform like it should have and it caused a danger. This needs to be addressed immediately. Thank you.
3 months ago I took my 2008 Mercury Mariner into Ford for the power steering recall. They were to do one of three things: update the software for the power steering, replace the torque sensor or replace the power steering column. They only updates the power steering system software. Day 1 after it being fixed, I was experience an extremely shaky steering wheel and a "power steering assist fault" indicator that would randomly show up now and then. Ford said they could look at it but that it would not fall under the recall. February 4, 9:00am, my power steering goes out pulling into work. I took my car into Ford today and they exclaimed that my power steering motor and column need replaced but again this has nothing to do with the recall. I experienced no problems with my power steering prior to the software update. After reading several (a couple hundred) reviews by other customers, they experienced the same exact incidents a few months after the update, but Ford said they had to pay the full $1,200 to replace the steering column. It is sickening to know that this "update" is actually causing power steering to malfunction and putting people's lives in danger. On top of it, Ford says once the update is ran, there is nothing more they can do under the recall, when they know full well know what the update is doing and putting money in their pockets. Someone please look into this. Lives can be lost due to this malfunction that should not be swept under the rug.
On August 8th 2014. At the time of the repair at sunnyvale Ford, I told the advisor (ziad hashemy) that I had an incident where the power steering stopped working and reverted to manual mode. Sunnyvale Ford then only conducted a re-programming of the electrical power steering. On Wednesday, January 21st 2015 while driving my kids to school the power steering went into manual mode again and failed to work (steering wheel was stiff). Sunnyvale Ford then directed me to the advisor (ziad hashemy) and they asked for the vehicle to be taken in to their shop for a diagnosis (with a fee of $150). I called Ford customer service to talk to someone and get their help on the issue, I talked to a representative that told me there was a 12,000 mile/ 12 month warranty on the recall repair. I then had the vehicle towed to sunnyvale Ford on Friday morning (1/24/15) I was advised that they needed authorization from Ford (manufacturer) to re open the recall and replace the power steering torque under the recall, but would not have information until Monday January 26th. On Monday, January 26th I called, I was then told that ziad was out for the day and no one else could help me. I called Ford directly to ask for assistance in getting this expedited, they adviced me that there was no warranty (contradicting what the representative told me on 1/23/14). I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told that there was a 24 hour call back to speak to a supervisor. On Tuesday, January 27th ziad called to tell me that the repair would not be covered under the recall and now they would have to replace the column (costing about $1,300). Later on Tuesday I received a call from Ford customer service supervisor chris to tell me that it wasnt going to be covered. I asked to talk to his manager and he said he is the highest ranked so there was no one else I could talk to.
Spring of 2014 is when the power steering had began to go out randomly and it would come back on once you shut the ignition of and restarted it. I called the local Ford dealership and they said there was nothing they could do about it right at that moment because they were waiting for a recall to be established because they didn't have the software to fix it. July of 2014 a recall notice was received in the mail. I didn't have the recall performed until December 4th 2014 and when they hooked the computer to the Mariner they were advised to reprogram it and then the recall would be complete. It worked just fine with no problems like before for only month. Then on January 2nd while my husband was driving in the snow at night the power steering went completely out. We take it back in and we find out that the entire steering column now has to be replaced costing us 912. 65!! the dealership said they talked to Ford corporation about what they would do but they responded that since the recall was performed it was our responsibility to pay the bill because the steering column went out on it's own (you who is reading this, I assume, knows this is just a load of crap!) now its November 2015 and still no new news on how this investigation is going but I encourage we get the word out and have as many people as possible write complaints!.
The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. While driving at 35 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver and the power steering assist fault warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact received a notification for NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). The contact believed the failure was related to the recall. The failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 103,719.
I have a 2008 Mercury Mariner (VIN # 4m2cu971x8kj07331) that had the power steering recall in August 2014, where the dealer updated the software (NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000). Three months later (11/3/2014) my power steering is out and needs to be replaced. I am being told since the recall is closed out that it is now my problem to have fixed, yet under the recall they could have replaced the steering column and power steering module software. I completely do not understand this. The safety issue is still present under the recall and obviously was not fixed, surely Ford would want to fix it. At least do the things that should have been completed under the original recall.
This is reference to NHTSA id number: 10653141. I discovered the July 1, 2014 Ford's safety recall 14s05 notice to all us Ford dealers. On page 6 a question and answer for the Ford dealers from Ford's service engineering operations, reveals Ford never attended the reprogramming the modules to fix the safety recall for electronic power steering for escapes and Mariners 2008-2011 models. This is the excerpts from this document tilted July 1, 2014 all us Ford and Lincoln dealers subject safety recall 14s05. Q3. What does the software updates do? a. The software updates may extend the time steering assist is maintained. In addition, the update provides increased driver awareness by sounding a chime and displaying the wrench light or warning in the message center when a fault is detected. Q4. What if a customer experiences loss of steering assist after the modules have been reprogrammed? a. The modules were reprogrammed to prevent sudden loss of steering assist while driving. Additionally, the instrument cluster software update will provide audible and visual indications to the driver in the unlikely event of a torque sensor fault. Any subsequent loss of assist repairs experienced after completion of module reprogramming are not covered by this recall. Q5. What should I tell a customer who experiences loss of steering assist after the recall has been performed? a. The modules were reprogrammed to prevent sudden loss of steering assist while driving in the event of a torque sensor fault. Customers should be advised that the replacement of the steering column or torque sensor is at their expense.
The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. While driving at various speeds, the power steering seized without warning. The vehicle was serviced under NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering), but the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. The contact mentioned that the software was only updated for the pscm (power steering control module) and instrument cluster module; however, the steering column and torque sensor were not replaced. The contact stated that the failure persisted several months after the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 93,000.
The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. While driving 30 mph, another vehicle crashed into the passenger side of the vehicle. The steering wheel seized and the check engine and oil indicators illuminated. There were no injuries. A police report was filed. The failure occurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The mechanic stated that the steering column needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 154,000.
I had the letter for the recall # 14s05 after having trouble with power steering just going out without warning and having close calls of hitting on coming traffic. The dealer acknowledged the recall letter and the vehicle was brought in and they upgraded the software and cluster panel to warn me when it would happen. It did not solve the issue with it still going out! I called a few times about it and they said that was what it was supposed to do. It would happen randomly sitting at a light and beep but no message on panel and then be ok. Recently went on a trip and was getting gas and message power steering assist malfunction came on. Computer hooked up at local repair shop (was weekend) stated "torque sensor malfunction" he hit option for auto config and helped temporarily. I notified Ford that Monday set appointment and car was doing it off and on all weekend and had a near miss with a head on collision as I could not even steer manually. The dealer stated it was the torque sensor and needed the steering column replaced. Ford said no it was my problem to pay to fix but dealer said was related to recall. They only updated software because of the code at time but still has been a problem since, and now much worse and more often. I can not afford $1,500 for this and don't feel I should have to as was a defect with Ford and 1. 1 million others had this. My wife is disabled and now she can't even go to the local grocery or dr because she can not steer car when power steering goes out. The updated software just warns me by message and alarm but doesn't fix the issue and I can not drive without wondering when next near miss is an accident!! I know this recall is closed but had been given a case # by Ford 07/24/15 #7564118 and spoke to maureen at 800-392-3673.
The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle started to make a loud popping sound from the steering wheel which became very hard to maneuver. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 97,410 and the current mileage was 97,443.
I started losing power steering approximately once a month but could turn my car off and it would restore itself. I took my car in for the recall on July 29, 2014, and everything was fine for a few months but then November 8, 2014, it did the same thing as before and November 9, 2014, the power steering went out completely. I took my car to the Ford dealership that did the recall and they told me I needed a new steering column. Obviously their reprogramming in the recall did not fix the problem and have seen the same problem with other people. I keep getting the run around from customer relations who tells me the dealership needs to call the recall exemption department but when I tell the service department they act like they do not know what I am talking about and that due to my vehicle having so many miles they can't help me. It only has 5,000 miles since the recall. The dealership even told me they had another Mariner do the same thing recently. Ford needs to own up to their faulty steering in these vehicles before people get seriously injured due to this.
While driving my 2008 Mercury Mariner, my steering went out on a curve on a 4 lane highway which caught me off guard. I could not move my steering wheel which caused me to almost drive into the car beside me. I pulled over to get gas & when I started the car, the steering was fine. I was told that it would cost at least $545 for just the sensor but that the whole steering column would need replacing so it would be a lot more than that to fix. I was unable to afford a repair, I simply stayed on my guard & would just pull over & re-start the car so that I could drive again safely. Then I got notice of a recall so I took it in & told them that I had issues with the steering & was very glad that there was finally a recall. Then 2 mos later, the steering went out again & this time it is worse than before. I can no longer turn the car off & re-start it to get steering, it is simply gone out completely & it harder to turn than ever. The steering wheel actually tries to turn the opposite way that the direction that I am turning. I called the dealership & they told me that this happened to another person & Ford would not cover it and told me that all they did was re-program the car. After researching the recall, I found that if the car shows history of a loss of the torque sensor, that the torque sensor was to be replaced. I then called Ford customer care & the lady there was very cold & simply stated that there was nothing they would do since it was already fixed once. I told her that it was not repaired correctly because of previous issues with it, it should have been replaced. She told me to take it up with the dealer that I took it to. I now have neck problems due to driving my unsafe car that I have no money to repair & am still making payments on. This is my only vehicle & I still need to get to work & get my son to school so I am left with no choice but to drive it.
I own a 2008 Mercury Mariner and I am a little concerned with its safety. On 03/15/13 I was pulling out of my drive and the steering wheel would not turn. I proceeded to put in reverse to get out of the road and backed into the drive. I turned all power down then restarted the vehicle with no problems in the steering. I went to pick up my kids and the steering wheel started to pulsate and I could hear a clunking noise while sitting at a stop sign. Everytime I came to a stop it would do it. On sat. I took it to the local shop. We couldnt notice anything out of the ordinary that would cause this to happen. The only solution was the entire steering column would have to be repalced. I did some research on line to see if this was a known issue or if a recall had been issued. I was amazed at how many complaints have been placed and no recall has been issued. I set up an appt with the dealer for tues. I was working on mon. And left to run an errand for work and the next thing I know, I was driving 65 mph on the highway and with out warning I lost all power in the driving and heard a loud grinding and then clunk. I thought the transmission went out! I immediately turned on my hazards to try and get off to the side of the road cause I was slowing down extremely fast. I was almost in a 3 car accident and luckily eveybody is ok, but it could of been a lot worse! I was towed to a dealer. They comfirmed my fears. The transmission went out with no warning. They told me this is a known problem but there was nothing they could do cause there was no recall on this! when I asked as to why, the said not enough complaints have been made! wow, you have got to be kidding me?!? how many people have to die before these issues are addressed? very unhappy because it's going to cost $5200 to replace transmission and the entire steering column! hold Ford accountable!.
I have experienced issues with the steering column. Vehicle makes a clicking/ticking sound when approaching a stop. Steering wheel shutters from side to side at a complete stop and upon starting from a dead stop. Vehicle was taken to two service garages (one Ford, one independent) and was diagnosed as in need of replacement of the power steering unit. Vehicle also had intermittent loss of power steering. When starting the vehicle at my residence the power steering did not work. However, after taking it to the first service garage for diagnosis the power steering was operable again. Since the replacement of the power steering unit the vehicle has not exhibited any further symptoms or issues.
Unable to turn key to start vehicle, had to manually move steering wheel. Replaced ignition switch in may 2012, then replaced steering column ignition lock assembly in July 2013. Received a safety recall notice from Ford regarding power steering system reverting to manual steering mode. I spoke with the service manager at the local Ford dealership and was told that my previous repairs were covered under the recall. I submitted the paperwork to Ford for reimbursement and was denied.
Power steering cuts out intermittently with no warning. Brought to dealer in September 2010 and they could not find problem. It has happened many times since then. In early 2013 it became more frequent and in February 2013 it was taken to the dealer and diagnosed with a problem that could only be remedied by the complete replacement of the steering column. This repair was done for a cost of $1087. 41. No further problems to date. It has since come to my attention that Ford has recently issued a recall on vehicles like mine manufactured at the kansas city plant that are experiencing the same exact issues that I have experienced. My vehicle was made at the kansas city plant. I contacted Ford and they told me my car is not involved in the recall. I find this hard to believe and think the recall should include my vehicle. I assume that because their data base shows I have already paid to have the complete steering column replaced (which was the only available remedy at the time) it is no longer necessary to modify this vehicle. I feel it is only fair that I be reimbursed for the repair. We am the original owner of the vehicle.
