Mercury Mariner owners have reported 9 problems related to brake master cylinder (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mercury Mariner based on all problems reported for the Mariner.
My vehicle had difficulty in stopping, needing the pedal to be pressed almost to the floor before it stopped. I changed the master cylinder in hopes that it would fix the problem but it didn't. The brakes periodically would work properly, but once again the problem would return. I stopped by the Ford dealership and they advised me that the 2008 Mercury milan was recalled for this defect, however, my 2008 Mariner wasn't on the list to be recalled. The dealership added that the parts for the repair was on back order. I still drive the car but cautious whenever I need to brake.

Re:NHTSA identifier 19v904 Ford internal reference number:19s54 although Mercury Mariners are not listed in this recall, my 2008 Mercury Mariner has the exact same issue, sticking abs valve. Ford will not recognize my vehicle as part of this recall. I have had 2 different certified mechanics work on the vehicle and both mechanics have installed new brake boosters, brake pads and master cylinders. The results from their work did not resolve the issue of soft brakes. The problem began when I made an abrupt stop while driving on a city street. The brakes were never fully functional after that. I believe the situation with my Mariner is identical to the issue identified in the NHTSA identifier 19v904. I also believe that Mercury Mariners should be included in this Ford recall.
Brakes suddenly stopped working while my 17 year old daughter was driving. A message appears regen brakes disabled, check brake system. Went to dealership and was told hcu and master cylinder needs to be replaced $4000 repair. Not acceptable seeing so many complaints of this issue that Ford has not yet issued a recall.
My break peddle goes almost to the floor of the car when I come to a red light or stop sign. I've brought my vehicle to the dealership on 4 seperate occasions and was told that they could not find anything wrong with my breaks. I recently brought to an independent repair shop and was told that I needed a new master cylinder. The master cylinder was replaced but I'm still having trouble with the position of the break when I come to a stop. There are several owners on line complaining about the same issue. Can someone please look into this and get back with me?.

The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated while driving 60 mph and depressing the brake pedal, the brake pedal required additional brake travel time to stop the vehicle. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with needing the brake master cylinder to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA campaign number: 19v904000 (service brakes, hydraulic) however the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. While driving approximately 35 mph, the brakes were applied but failed to stop the vehicle. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The failure recurred twice. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake pads, master cylinder, and brake booster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 60,000.
The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The contact stated that while driving at 25 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that the brake pedal required excessive pressure to slow the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the brakes master cylinder needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The contact also stated that the brake pads were also replaced however, the failure recurred. The contact stated that the failure occurred only when driving while it was raining. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
The traffic light turned yellow, I applied the brakes which worked momentarily then released as the brake pedal went all the way to the floorboard. No warning lights illuminated in the instrument panel. Using the emergency brake I stopped short of blocking the intersection. Upon stopping it was determined that on level ground with the vehicle idling in drive and the brake pedal fully depressed there was not enough brake force to keep the vehicle from moving forward. Inspection of the vehicle revealed that the left (driver side) front flexible brake line had ruptured and that there had been a small amount of brake fluid lost from the master cylinder. This line is about 17 inches long with a metal sleeve in the middle where it is attached to the vertical strut for support. The rupture was at the top of this sleeve. While bleeding the brakes after the line was replaced, it was found that the low brake fluid sensor worked. Is this an unknown "safety feature" of abs? if it is, progress has brought us back to where an individual part can cause the same catastrophic failure as before the split system was introduced in the 1960s. I am the original owner of this vehicle. This has been reported to Ford motor company.

Car had 2,500 miles when both brake lights illuminated and only had manual braking. Car was towed to dealership where they needed to consult with Ford specialists to determine the problem because they weren't sure if it was the master cylinder or the brakes. The replacement part had to pulled from the assembly line because the parts were not due until 8-15-2007. Replaced master cylinder on 7-26-2007.
