1 Car Stall problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 07/21/2017

I purchased this vehicle recently with only 40,000 miles. The car keeps stalling or dying as you may say as I drive. It will be okay for a short period of time and then just die right on the highway! once it dies once, the car will continue to do so over and over again until the engine has cooled down. I have the engine codes of p2104, p2111 and p2135 with a refere to p2101. I have brought it to several mechanics and paid well over $1,000 to fix this problem and it just continues. I am afraid my family may all die! were on 93 recently heading toward boston and my car died right at the intersection of 495. I had all my children in the car and it would not restart. I have fixed the fuel system (error code last time), had a complete tune up, and throttle sensor etc.

While driving 50 mph vehicle stalled three times. Took it to a garage, was told it was necessary to have the vehicle when it stalled. Found eleven (11) similar complaints on your site! perhaps there is some validity to the complaints. All parts of the vehicle related to safe driving were rendered useless. Sounds like a safety issue to me!.

7 Car Stall problem of the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/18/2013

One of the braided stainless steel fuel lines that attaches to the engines fuel rail developed a leak. I kept smelling a strong odor of gas, but I could not find out where it was coming from. After two weeks of smelling the gas, I took it to a garage and they showed me the gas squirting from the braided hose going to the engine. I took the vehicle to the Ford dealer and showed them the leak. They took the vehicle in their shop and removed the fuel lines. Because of the age of the vehicle, Ford does not provide any replacement parts. I was unable to get replacement fuel lines from Ford. I checked with "junk yards" all over the country. I had no luck finding replacement fuel lines. Junk yards cut the fuel line when they pull engines. I finally located a company in new castle, DE that supplies hydrulic hoses, etc. I took my old fuel lines to them and they removed the fittings and installed them on new stainless steel braided lines. I took the new lines back to the Ford dealer and they installed them on my vehicle. They said the new hoses had no leaks. The Ford dealer charged me over $400. 00 to remove the old hoses and install new hoses. The shop in new castle, DE only charged me $40. 00 for a pair of new hoses. I'm very lucky I did not have an engine fire. These stainless hoses are used on a lot of Ford vehicles. Ford should be required to supply replacement hoses.

8 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 07/16/2010

My Mountaineer stalls without warning while going about 35 mph but after a few minutes can restart. It has done this 4 times over the last 3 or so months. In addition twice it would not start (it had been about 30 minutes since I drove it) and it had to be jumped. I replaced the battery thinking that was the problem but it persists. I brought it to a regular garage once, who kept it for a day and found nothing wrong. I then brought it to a Mercury dealer who kept it for 2 days but found no codes or problems. It just stalled again two nights ago while I was driving 35 mph without and restarted a few minutes later. The dealer had it for a day but again found no codes or problems. So far I just put in a new battery and they changed the oil and filter.

9 Car Stall problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/08/2010

Driving from dallas, TX, to west lafayette, in, in Jan 2010, the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer with 4. 6l v8 engine blew a spark plug out of the cylinder head causing us to stop in a small town to have the engine repaired. This was a factory installed (not replaced) spark plug. I have seen many complaints about this in the Ford v8 engine. The vehicle had around 86,000 miles on it at the time and was not due for a spark plug replacement until 100,000 miles. This was a safety hazard as gasoline is spewing out of the cylinder head with an attached and still arcing spark plug.

11 Car Stall problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 03/20/2007

I was driving home in my 2002 Mercury Mountaineer on Monday evening in lyndhurst, NJ around the time of 7 pm. I heard a very loud bang, followed by some rattling which scared me half to death. I had no idea what has occurred. I was very nervous because I was unable to apply pressure to my break to stop without the truck idling very rough like it wanted to stall. The truck lost all power. I carefully proceeded to a local gas station in rutherford and dropped my car off for the machining to look at in the morning. I received a call the following morning from (the mechanic) who stated the #5 spark plug ripped out of my aluminum engine head. For a cost of $366. 00 he re-threaded the spark plug, installed a new coil and did a tune-up. He told me this is a very common problem with certain v8 and v10 Ford engines. It can occur again, or the same plug may rip out again. This is a very dangerous situation especially when I have to go on two highways to get to work everyday. The sound was like I was being fired on by nato. Imagine losing power on the highway with people behind you at 65 mph. I looked on the internet and found many compliants by Ford customers who had the same thing happen several times, causing them to replace the engine. Ford does not want to take responsibilty, someone needs to make them replace these dangerous engines. Spark plugs just fire the engine, they are not supposed to shoot out of the engine like small rockets. What if my hood was open and this happened? someone could have goten killed. If this were a baby seat, crib or child toy it would be recalled. We can't wait till there is a death from this problem.

18 Car Stall problem of the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer

Vehicle driven in forward and comes to a stop (I. E. - at a stop sign, toll booth, or traffic light) will stall/hesitate without warning when attempting to proceed forward again. This has happened multiple times since we purchased the vehicle new. Vehicle was taken to several different dealerships in three states and they say "Ford/Mercury is aware of the problem but at the current time there is no fix. " radio when tuning would not pick up any radiostations due to radio not hooked to antenna. Door molding on drivers side door came loose and prevented the door from being opened more than three inches. Driver was not able to enter drivers side door to drive vehicle. Rear windshield wiper engine burned out and rear wiper did not work. Brake stuck when attempting to place vehicle into gear after initial start of engine.

19 Car Stall problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Vehicle stalls when coming to a complete stop. Dealership cannot duplicate the problem, and are unable to fix it.

20 Car Stall problem of the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer

Vehicle has stalled/hesitated upon accleration several times. It has done this at least 10 times (stalled 3 thus far. . . Today 8/23/00 was one incident of that) despite efforts by Ford to remedy. I've had the dealer replace the recalled throttle, re-orient my fuel lines, and eventually replace my engine without any remedy. This could be a very dangerous issue (once it stalled while making a left across traffic lanes. Fortunately it was clear). I've owned explorers in the past with no such incidents. ( dot number: ).
