Started losing power ,did not want to go pas 30 miles per hr ,then it ramed up and came to a stop with no acceleration ,I shut it off then start it again and was able to get home at a low rate of speed while continuing to have these problems, another day while far away from home the engine rammed up again minimizing my speed as the transmission was slipping and not go fast then my o/d over drive went on flashing a light ,while the engine kept steady at 20-30 miles per hour while accelerating increasing no speed ,now my SUV will not run wright, it will kick into gear at times constantly and cause problems driving safely ,this is a common problem I'm hearing and reading in the internet with the Ford/ Mercury Mountaineer the manufactory does not want to accept responsibility with this problem . . . . . This is clear a recall issue that needs to be addressed before someone gets killed on the highway by getting rammed by a semi-truck which it almost happened to me !!!! a multi-million dollar law suit is in order if they do not acknowledge and fix this problem.

Car ran rough & hesitated/surged upon acceleration. Apparently this is a common Ford problem involving premature spark plug break down in the Ford triton engine see Ford spark plug class action settlement. Shultz Ford in nanuet NY diagnosed the problem as faulty plugs, there was also a risk of breaking plugs upon removal. I had them do the repairs at a cost of $788. Later I found that there was a settlement, however my car was not included even though it had the same engine as the cars/trucks/ SUV's that were included in the settlement. Ford customer service said there was nothing they could do reimbursing me for the repair expense as my SUV was not included in the settlement. They suggested I file this complaint. Can I get some satisfaction?.

As I was driving the vehicle just died; all the warning lights came on and as I was losing speed I pulled over to curb the best I could. Restarted car and it seemed to run fine but happed again 20 minutes later. This has also happed 2 other times within the last 10,000 miles of driving.
I was driving don the road to an intersection going 45 mph and noticed black smoke coming from under the hood. I proceeded to pull over and got my family out the car before the electrical was completely fried. I tried to put the fire out with two extinguishers and help from fellow bystanders. The blaze under the hood had to be put out by the fire department. I received a police and fire report. The area that the fire had originated from was the fuse box. I know this was a factory problem because I didn't do any work in those areas. I would like compensation for my vehicle because I'm now out 6500 dollars and I searched online and read about over a 100 explorer and Mountaineer fires under the hood. I never received any recalls for my vehicle and I owned it over 10 years.
I was driving to an intersection with my family while going 45 mph. I noticed black coming through the vents. I pulled off to a gas station parking lot. I proceeded to use fire extinguishers under the hood, the fire department had to come put it out. They did a look through and determined the fire started at the fuse box. I went home and researched that this is a recurring problem with this type of vehicle. I'm now out the 6500 I used to purchase it. I cant fix it or trade it in now.
Using cruise control going down a slight grade the engine died. This has happened multiple times in the last few months, so now I know to put the vehicle in netural while still moving and re-start the engine, then pull back down into drive. This isn't easy to do, so be careful not to put in reverse or park while trying to re-start the engine.

While driving the Mountaineer I was slowing for a stoplight shortly after starting it up (had driven about 1/3 mile). The engine suddenly started to speed up and required significant extra braking force to come to a stop. I put the car in nuetral and the engine ran at about 3,300 rpm for about 10 seconds. This is the third time this has happened. The first time the thermostat was replaced. The second time the throttle body was replaced. The third time the vehicle was checked but no defect could be found. The second time I also put it in nuetral and it also ran at about 3,300 rpm for about 10 seconds.

The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed black smoke and flame in the engine area. The fire department was contacted to extinguish the fire. The vehicle was towed to the contact's insurance company for further investigation. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 165,000. Kmj.
Vehicle is missing, now shaking. Need spark plug replaced but is stuck. Needed special tool/equipment to get out. Will be very costly. I shouldn't have to have this problem since I only purchased it almost 2 yrs ago. I am really contemplating suing!!.
Engine will not turn over. All electronics work. Keep turning ignition key on and off sometimes it will start in a few minutes other times it has to sit for a half hour or more. Dome light will come on for no reason. After reading others having same issues, I turned on easy access and slightly turned ignition key and sure enough the seat went back and dome light came on. This vehicle has been to a Ford dealer numerous times, once towed, and they can't seem to duplicate the problem. Thanks to this website I now have more information and hopefully will be able to get this on going issue fixed. The easy access is always turned off. The no crank no start is the big problem because I can't go anywhere for just a half hour and be confident it will start.
Vehicle starting missing, then shaking. Had spark plugs replaced and 3 broke off and stuck. Needed special tool/equipment to get out. Very costly.

Pulled into parking space, placed shifter in park, turned off ignition, released brake and vehicle rolled backwards as if not in park. Attempted to restart vehicle and no response. Set parking brake. Could not get vehicle to lock into park, shifter moved regardless of brake on or not and would not start. Moved shifter through entire range of gears and returned to park, vehicle still would not start and park would not hold. Called dealer and was told to have it towed in. Returned to vehicle and tried once more and it started and proceeded to respond normally. Vehicle taken directly to dealer who could not find any problem or cause of preceding situation. On two subsequent dates (most recent 5/25/2012), vehicle was backed into a parking space, placed in park and ignition turned off. When an attempt to restart vehicle was made there was no response. Park appeared to hold normal, but unable to engage ignition. Dash lights, chimes and all electrical components appear to work normal but was still unable to engage starter. Again started process to have vehicle towed to dealer. After approximately 30 minutes to an hour of sitting (with no other action) vehicle started normally. Again dealer at a loss for cause and cannot effect repair since unable to recreate problem. Concern is for transmission/ignition interlock failure or other action that could result in damage or injury.
We have experienced two well known issues with the explorer/mountaineer. The body panel on the back hatch is cracked in the middle and Friday we had the spark plug blow out of the head/socket stripping the threads out to the point that the common repair kit used for these instances won't work and the only solution is a replacement head which is quoted at a $3500 job and the vehicle is only worth about $5700. I understand Ford accepts no responsibility for this engine/head defect despite the fact that it has occured on factory tightened plugs.
The contact owns a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact stated that the vehicle was parked and idle when it caught in fire from the engine area and spread to the instrument panel. The instrumental panel and the engine components were completely melted. The fire department was called and advised that the fire originated at the engine. A fire report was filed. The VIN was not available. The vehicle was destroyed. The failure and the current mileage was 160,000.

I purchased a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer on 4/11/2011. As I was driving it home from the dealership, the same day, I noticed some black smoke coming out the back of the car. There were no messages that came up in the message center window so I had no clue what was happening. As I looked back up from the rear view mirror, I noticed a first responders truck next to the drivers window who was yelling " get out of the vehicle, its on fire!" immediately I pulled over and my mother and I had to jump from the vehicle because the entire engine area was engulfed with flames. I was injured while I was fleeing from the vehicle. The fire department and state troopers were enroute and my vehicle was hosed down and towed. I almost died in this vehicle because of the rear differential going out on it. This vehicle type has had many problems with this part and their customers should be compensated! this car is a fire hazard! if I would have had my 3 small children in their car seats I may not have been able to get them all out in time. Compensated!!.

Shut off while driving lost power steering etc.
Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact smelled anti freeze inside of the vehicle and noticed that it was leaking. He stated that the smell was harming a pregnant passenger. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer had not been notified of the failure, nor was the vehicle repaired. The current mileage was 55,000 and the failure mileage was 42,000. The VIN was unavailable. Bw.
Since I purchased in 2009, engine kills anytime, mostly when gas pedal not pressed. Pulling out of parking lots, sitting at red lights, or letting off gas on interstate, engine just kills. Sometimes feels like a jolt. I have to put the shift in neutral and restart the engine. Records of all visits for the problem at dealership. Never could solve problem, but too unsafe to donate to my grandson. If something were to happen to him because of a defect that was never found, I don't know what I'd do. Cannot check transmission fluid level. Sealed. I do have some fluid stains on my driveway. For years I've reported to the dealership and specified the concern for safety but to no avail. It kills anytime. May not die for a week, or tomorrow, or even a month. No particular pattern. Feels like a transmission problem. If I'm sitting in a parking lot with motor running, sometimes it just kills. It's the shifting to neutral while driving on highways and streets to restart while moving I'm worried about. I've had several mechanics claim they fixed it but to no avail. Please give me some direction. All the shops I've gone to are reputable businesses. One mechanic said the electronic brain (computer box) might be causing and said to send it to Mercury for recalculation. I don't know about that. Most of the read outs are epa related.
My transmission went only after 1 year of having car, spend ofver $3,000 for a new transmission and now the transmission is going again. This is unacceptable. I don't even drive that much.
Tranmission jerking and jumping into gear, and reverse, roll forward in park on a hill. Liftgate has a crack around and under the symbol.
Just left the highway and ended up at a red light traffic signal and one the light turned green, I went to drive off and a loud boom I could hear coming from under my hood, as I looked in my rear view mirror a semi truck started honking its horn and slammed to miss hitting from behind. I went to pull to the side the road but truck was jumping all over and I had to pull in front of cars turning which I smelt a smell like something burning. The spark plug had ripped from its socket, it had happened the first time 1 year ago now 2nd one, repairman says he sees this all the time with my vehicle, " Ford is helping putting my kids through college with these problems from your year" wow, I thought Ford got, paid, repairmen got paid, and I'm the only one taken for a ride of a lifetime. Not right is it.

Without warning of any kind the engine quits under 35 mph, sometimes with cruise control on. After car rolls to a stop, it can restart right away. Loss of power steering and brakes. Dealer says no codes to back up complaint. This has as happened at least 3x spread over 35,000 odometer miles.
We really don't have any information regarding the incident. The car had been parked outside for approximately 4 hours, when upon waking at around 3:50 am on Sunday morning, I smelled a strange odor emanating from somewhere in the house. As I investigated, I soon found out that the smell was not in the house, but outside, and that's when I found my car ablaze. The fire department had already been called by the time I realized what it was, and the fire was put out. No police came, and no report was filed. The only information given to any official was my name, my cell number, the license plate number, and possibly the VIN. The 1997 Mercury Mountaineer now sits in my driveway.

On August 29, 2008, at about 9:30 p. M. , I was going home from a vacation. I was going 55 miles per hour and the vehicle power completely stopped. I was able to get off the freeway safely and after several attempts the vehicle started up again. This was very frightening because we try our best to maintain the vehicle to its optimal I. E. Oil,tires. This needs to be investigated further by this agency as soon as possible. Thank you.
My 2006 Mercury Mountaineer has a problem with the a/c fan unit. The a/c fan will not decrease in blower intensity even if manually downgrading the fan or turning up the temperature. Does not matter whether you are in auto or manual a/c mode.
My car caught on fire, while parked in my garage. My garage burned completely down and some damage was done to my home and surrounding property.
