Engine Cooling System Problems of Mercury Mountaineer

Truck cooling system died which caused the truck to catch fire while driving down the highway, smoke poring out, state troopers had to assist us. My daughter was scared to death and now refuses to get back in the truck even though we got a new engine. To make matters worse we spent 3000 on and engine. . . 500 on cooling system and had the transmission reprogrammed. The truck is still have major problems and now for says it needs the transmission rebuilt or replaced. All of this is out of pocket. We cant even trade it in bc they will only give us 1/2 of what we paid for it 2 yrs ago. Nightmare and makes me sick that Ford doesn't care.

Radiator has failed a second time in 3 years on 2006 Mercury Mountaineer.

As of April 18,2011 my radiator is craked and I have to replace it for the third time. My Mercury Mountaineer is a 2006 and in 2008 I had to replace the radiator which cost me around 800. 00 with labor and here we are in April of 2011 and I have to replace my radiator again. This is costing me to much money and with all these complaints about the radiator, you would think that they would have a recall on the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer radiator. Somebody needs to do something about this because a radiator should not have to be replace 3 or more time in less then 5 years. Please do something about this. Thanks.

Moved my truck to let another car out of the drive way. Pulled back in turned the truck off came in the house and heard a loud boom. Looked out the window and fire was shooting up by the wheel.

2006 Mercury Mountaineer driving on the highway, suddenly the coolant temperature went up crazily and the engine sounded horrible and lost power. Fortunately stoped by the roadside and found the radiator was leaking and coolant is almost empty. Searched around the web and found that for 4. 0 engine from Ford and Mercury, this is pretty normal problem due to a design defect. People are changing radiator every year. Never heard such ridicious thing that nowdays the radiator last so short time. It should last life time of the car. Ford apparently knew it, however, they only announced a TSB in 2009 when most of the warranties were gonna expire. They should issue a recall. This is a design problem and it poses life threatening risks. I guess they just don't care about customers. The customers need to repair out of they own pockets, which support Ford's chain dealers service departments. Well, sounds a good plan for them. Well, the customers are not stupid. They are change to japanese cars, which have far less problems. I will never a Ford?Mercury car and would be glad to see them go bankcrupcy.

I am the owner of a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer. It has about 64,000 miles on it, most of them highway miles. I have a leak in my radiator. The dealer says it is a defect in the radiator, and no corrosion is present. It is out of warranty, so I must bear the cost of replacement of the radiator. Cost ~$700. I do not drive off road, so there is no valid reason the radiator should have failed. During an internet search, I discovered this is a common problem with 2006 and 2007 Mercury Mountaineers and Ford explorers. This issue should be investigated, and Ford held accountable for putting defective parts in their vehicles.

My 2006 Mercury Mountaineer radiator needs replacing because it is busted. I only have an estimate of 65,000 miles on it. The part will cost me $285. 00 not including the labor. This vehicle is only 4 years old how could a part like this already need replacing.

I have a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer with 42,000 miles on it and was notified by my dealership that there is a leak in the radiator and it needs to be replaced. My dealership told me this was common problem with Mountaineers but Ford will not stand behind the equipment.

My 2008 Mercury Mountaineer is having a strong transmission kick when down shifting and a squicking noise which I think is coming from the break and my dealer kept on reporting back to me as "unable to duplicate" the problem. This SUV were bought as brand new and I feel like that the car is going to break apart or loose my break everytime I feel those rattles. Radiator began leaking in my 2006 Mercury Mountaineer at 51,500 miles.

Radiator leak. Complete radiator was replaced with new radiator and hoses and still leaked. I believe Ford's radiators are defective.

The radiator in the 2006 Ford explorer/Mercury Mountaineer is a weak link in the vehicle. My radiator is leaking and I'm not the only one, I have found other complaints of this on other explorers and Mountaineers of this year.

Broken radiator in my 2006 Mercury Mountaineer with 52,000 miles.

Cracked radiator with only 41,000 miles. Dealership indicated repair cost would be $1,000. When I questioned possible defect they said they had no recalls but also indicated they had just replaced another one last week. I called another dealership to check price they estimated $750 and also indicated they had to replace 2-3 in the last few months. Judging from this site and others this is a major defect with 2006 Ford explorers and Mountaineers. Why doesn't anyone hold the manufacturer accountable?.

I have 2003 Mercury Mountaineer and I have had it since February 2007. I have had numerous problems with it and the last problems was the breaking point. I have three more years to pay for this vehicle and I want something to be done about the problems with this vehcile. Ford should be held responsible for this vehicle and fixing the problems associated with it. I purchased this vehicle from community Ford in new albany, ms in February 2007 with 45,000 miles on it. I couldn't get an extended warranty or any warranty with the vehicle I was told. After a year, I had to replace the front end and it was $500. 00 at george's tire services. I took it in due to this noise coming from the front and I was advised that if I didn't have the work did it would lock up on me while I am driving and cause and accident. I noticed that my structure body:hatchback/tailgate has cracked completely. My seat belt on the driver side in the back don't work. My engine cooling system aircompressor has went out and I have electrical problems where my oil gauge is constantly saying it's low. I have my oil change every 3000 miles. I am hearing this noise in the rear of the vehicle and I don't know what it is and can't afford to get going to Ford to see what it is. I have been smelling this burning coming from the under the hood and I don't know what it is either. My lastest problem is my transmission is going out and I have had this vehicle for two years and I have three more years of payment on this vehicle. My transmission cost me around $3500 and I don't have any warranty on it. This is a lemon I have purchased and I think something should be done about it.

Had to replace radiator at 36,500 miles. Purchased vehicle on sept 9, 2009 as a certified Mercury vehicle and within 3 months had a leak in the radiator that needed to be replaced.

The contact mentioned that he had the radiator replaced a total of three times as a result of the same failure. Leaky radiator was 1st detected by myself but mechanics were unable to determine the leak because anti-freeze was not visibly leaking but the resevoir was always empty. I was told it was a problem with my tires. The problem was not addressed by mechanics until they saw that the radiator could not hold coolant any longer. Now it has been identified as having a hole in the radiator.

In an attempt to diagnose the failure the vehicle was taken to several different repair centers, to no avail. When contacting his local dealer the contact was advised that the vehicle would need several repairs including a failed radiator, thermostat, water pump, brake drums, rotors and a grease treatment, all at his own expense. Had to replace two radiators within 30,000 miles of replacement. Exactly how many complaints, or should I say deaths (?) are needed to trigger an investigation of a company gladly receiving assistance while outputting inferior vehicles. No vehicle manufactured in 2006 should need three new radiators within 3 year and 70k miles. Stop letting Ford off the hook and get serious about getting to the bottom of their issues. Just do a search on 2006 Mercury Mountaineer and you will clearly see there are issues with the cooling as well as the automatic transmission. In fact, our model has the same issue that others have reported with the automatic transmission and it will sometimes no moves gears, slip a gear, and tug like it is pulling out of mud at a stop light. Open a full blown investigation into their lack of quality control and the lack of professionalism on the part of the dealerships for not reporting this to corporate.

I have had to replace three radiators in my vehicle since purchasing the auto in sept of 06. The first one was replaced at 26,048 miles (under warranty) the 2nd 33,202 miles (under warranty)and the last one occurred with 53000 miles (no longer covered). Each time they replaced the radiator with a brand new one. I have also contacted Ford / Mercury to look for assistance on this problem and why this is happening and they directed me back to the dealership. I do not believe this is normal wear and tear on my vehicle.

Rear panel under window has recently cracked, there are now 2 vertical cracks running down the back of the vehicle. Also, hitch to rear door doesn't stay up. This vehicle has also had a new engine put it and injectors have popped out on more than one occasion. This is the most expensive vehicle I have ever purchased and it has given me more problems than I could ever expect in a vehicle. Ford needs to compensate for this vehicle. We have owned several Ford's and have never seen anything like this. It is a true lemon>>>>.

There is a big problem with the 2006 Mercury Mountaineers and Ford explorers with the v6's radiator. At very low mileages the radiator separates at the seams on the side causing a leak. This is very dangerous and expensive. I have done research on the problem and it is terrible that you only get 40k or less out of a radiator. There needs to be a recall on this problem!!! please help.

The heater stop working 3 different times, the first time they replaced the thermostat, 2nd could not find anything wrong, dealer thinks might be intake manifold or head gasket, 3rd time say must take it apart to figure out but pressure test are within normal range.
