38 Cruise Control problem of the 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/16/2004

Tried to set cruise control and it would not hold speed set after 2 attempts, then it just "took off". Gas petal was all the way to the floor and I could not get it up. Could not shut off cruise control by braking or hitting "off" button. Was on expressway and going over 90. Had to fight gas petal all the way to the floor by braking. Fortunately I was on straight section of road and there was no ice and little traffic. I had to wait in car in 6 degree temp. For hr. And a half for aaa to load vehicle on flatbed to take to Ford dealership. Unable to start engine b/c gas petal was still to the floor, so no way to keep warm. Ford dealership in mich. Disabled cruise control to allow me to continue to travel. Mercury dealership in toledo told me 2000 and 2001 Mountaineers have been recalled for cruise control cable defect but when I called Ford cust. Serv. They said they wouldn't do anything to fix the vehicle or reimburse for excess towing chg. Because there was no recall for 1999's. This is a serious safety issue and it could have been far more disastrous.

39 Cruise Control problem of the 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 09/10/2003

The cruise control was set at 65 mph when all of a sudden the vehicle accelerated to 90 mph. The dealer informed the consumer they would grease the throttle control cable, however the problem continued. The consumer stated there were two recalls on this issue. # 99-v-062-001 and 03-v-280-000.

40 Cruise Control problem of the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 07/22/2003

Electronic controls operated by the generic control module (wipers, rear defroster, power windows etc. ) have locked up. Throttle sticks after full stop and use of cruise control and needs excessive force to move forward. Existing recalls should cover these repairs, as well as two other recalls for the corrosive hood latch, and speed control where the throttle could ice up in prolonged cold weather. I went in armed with documentation and the recall information from the website but the sayville Ford dealership in sayville, NY, refused to service them, stating they were "campaigns" not actual recalls. If your vehicle doesn't come up for service on their computer, they do not acknowledge the legal recalls and won't do the repairs. Recall #'s: 00v072000, 99v062001, 99v164000, 97v074000.

41 Cruise Control problem of the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/26/2003

While turning right through a cloverleaf interstate entrance ramp at approximately 35-40 mph I attempted to accelerate and merge with on-coming traffic. The accelerator pedal popped and went under the brake pedal. I was able to pull to the side of the road and visually verified that the accelerator pedal bracket had broken. This is the metal bracket that was spot welded to the cowl panel/("firewall"). This left 3 holes in the cowl panel, each being approximately 7/32" in diameter. I was able to drive the vehicle home by pulling the accelerator pedal towards me until I was above 30 mph, then I controlled the speed using the cruise control. I was out of my home state when this occured, and because of my location at the time of failure I was forced to drive the vehicle in this condition for 3 hours. Both my wife and I had extreme headaches the remainder of the night and my 2 yr old daughter screamed most of the trip after that occurence. This possibly could have been caused by carbon monoxide poisoning due to the 3 holes left in the cowl panel which are directly next to the lh cylinder head of the engine. We all felt fine this morning. I am an ase certified master technician so I will likely repair this myself using screws and loctite.

42 Cruise Control problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 07/16/2001

Service bulletin 14966 states do not replace any parts in an effort to repair the vehicle - vehicle has been idle at office since returned from dealer on July 24,2001 - Ford motor continues to sell this vehicle with the same problem - Ford regional service mamager contacted me on two occasions and was to get back by August 7, 2001 but has not done so. The vehicle has been parked as I feel that where a drive train is involved, it could be dangerous - I have asked that the vehicle be replace as it has been out of service for 21 days.

43 Cruise Control problem of the 1997 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 10/13/2000

While parking at a right angle on a steep hill overlooking a busy road, the car almost at a standstill, the driver's foot on the brake, the car engine suddenly started screaming, the gas pedal depressed on its own and the car surged forward over a concrete parking curb and mowed down a tall palm tree. My daughter-in-law would have been killed if not for hitting the tree, as she had already taken off her seatbelt and opened her door - we were so close to a standstill. The tree stopped the car from going over a very steep hill at a high rate of speed onto traffic on the road below. The replacement value of the tree is not yet known. I have since discovered via channel 4 tv in uk, and dateline nbc that this is a known problem with this vehicle and people have been killed, as my daughter-in-law and I would have been if not for the palm tree. I have now had the cruise control disabled on the vehicle so that I can drive it, as I can not ethically trade it in and let someone else buy it when I know it has a problem. I hope that by registering this brief complaint that it will help you to influence Ford Lincoln Mercury to acknowledge the fault recall these vehicles. Thank you.
