Automatic Transmission Gear Indicator Problems of Mercury Sable

The contact owns a 2003 Mercury Sable. The contact experienced issues with shifting the gear shift into the appropriate gears. He could not move the gear shift at all, even when the brake pedal was depressed. He also noticed that the brake lights were inoperable when the brake pedal was depressed. The gear shift would not budge from the park position. The VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign id number 04v106000. The vehicle has not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were less than 157,000.

The contact owns a 1997 Mercury Sable. When parking the car the shifter indicates it is in park, but it is actually in reverse. There is a recall #96v166000, but the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN. The consumer noticed this problem on 9-6-05.

Recall campaign 96v176000 was issued. When engaging the vehicle into park it began to roll. However, this vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN. The vehicle does not enage in park and will not pass inspection.

Intermittently the stick shift gear indicator stuck from park to drive or reverse. Dealer inspected, charged $400. Oo for repairs, problem still occurs.

Consumer is unable to take vehicle out of park gear. Consumer has to leave vehicle in neutural gear, engage emergency brakes and leave keys in the ignition, to park vehicle. The dealership replaced brake wires, but the problem reoccured. Please provide more details. Ts.
