On April 12 I exited my drive onto the 55 mph highway in front of my house when suddenly the car began to shudder. I jammed the gas to get up to speed to prevent oncoming cars from hitting me which made the problem much worse. It was violently shuddering and wouldn’t accelerate. I took my foot off the gas which stopped the shaking. I gassed it slowly and I could accelerate to speed much slower than I would have liked. It wasn’t smooth. One half mile later it suddenly and violently began again. Taking my foot off the gas it smoothed out and I could accelerate again. I changed plans and went to the service garage to see what the problem was. It seems the problem is a known issue that hasn’t been addressed. I’m glad there were no cars coming from the opposite direction which could have impacted the drivers side while I was floundering out of my drive. I will enclose the garages assessment.

I bought a used 1999 Mercury Sable GS with the u type 3. 0l v6 engine 2 months ago. Just recently I noticed the car wanting to lunge forward while holding the brake at stops. Then a few days later whenever I start the car it lunges forward. Nothing dramatic but definitely noticeable. I started looking online to see about a recall and 1 was present a long time ago. Is it to late to get my car checked or how to see if it was ever serviced or called for the recall.

While traveling down the interstate 90 highway southbound on 10 June, 2016 the vehicle suddenly and without warning lost forward motion power and the rpm level of the car shot up suddenly. The vehicle rolled to a stop on the side of the highway while still running, but there was no vehicle movement provided in any of the automatic transmission gears, including reverse. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop in spooner, WI where a repair bill estimate of $3-$4k was provided. . . . . Rebuild current or replace with remanufactured.
The transmission froze up breaking the axle right off as I pulled out of a drive way onto the street with on coming traffic.
Purchase vehicle used in June of 2015, one repair after another. Owned 1yr and here are repairs that we have had to drain plug replaced, trans filter, additive & fluid, re-built transmission, fluid, replace rear brake shoes, replace valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, egr sensor. Cost incurred $3,275. 20 way more than any car should have in one year! anybody going to reimburse these expenses?.
Tl-the contact owns a 1995 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the transmission jerked severely with extreme hesitation. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis, who stated the rear subframe was completely corroded which caused damage to the transmission. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 93v106000 (structure). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 103,219. Js.
My mechanic advised that the coil spring is lacking a cover and is rusting and may break. My transmission "slips" and "revs" at random. Both of these items are supposedly under recall, but Ford will not honor the recalls.
Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds the vehicle would suddenly hesitate to accelerate. The contact indicated that the failure had occurred on multiple occasions. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 55,000. Jft.
The car will not come out of park, nor do the brake lights work and sometimes the brake lights stay on. There was a recall for this very issue. Recall #04s12 or 04v106000. However the recall stops at 2003. My vehicle has the same defective switch in it but Ford is refusing to replace it. They claim my vehicle was made a few days after the recall stopped. Well that doesn't make my brake pedal switch any safer. I'm being handed a line of crap by Ford. They installed a defective switch and have admitted its defective and wont fix mine because of a manufacture date. What court wouldn't prosecute Ford if I have a serious accident because of this defective switch that they know is defective but refuse to fix it.

Throttle cable stuck, engine at 1800 tpm, engine reved to 2600 rpm, inability to slow vehicle, surging. Required hard breaking. Once car stopped, idle dropped to 900 rpm after 15-30 seconds. Happens with increasing frequency. Engine surges at start, revs to 2100 then to 2600. Inspected cable, throttle and cruise control cable point of entry to supporting bracket plastic shattered. Cable emits sound from binding. Took to Ford dealer, they indicated my vehicle was not part of the recall although the problem has been clearly documented with the same make, model, year and engine.
Vehicle accelerates on it's own. Have had multiple problems where I go to stop and car accelerates at a stop sign or light. I have almost rear ended multiple cars because of this. While going from a red to green light on a hill my Sable stalled and began to roll backwards, almost crashing into the car behind me, if it hadn't been for my quick reaction. Vehicle will idle very high, 2. 5rpms at the lowest, while sitting in park after startup. After a 5 minutes it will sometimes drop down to 750-1000rpms, other times it will continue to idle high. During drive it will continually accelerate to around 40 mph on it's own. When I brake it will idle high and lurch forward, until I'm forced to push the brake all the way to the floor. Then car will either continue to idle high or drop so low that it stalls. Usually I drive with two feet at lights or signs to be able to rev engine from stalking. Engine light came on, code read idle air control valve, so it was replaced. Problem continued. Took to garage and it looks like the intake manifold gasket. All vacuum lines were replaced as well. Am going to fix the gasket and sell. Car scares me too much to drive. Multiple panic and anxiety attacks. Please recall this, extremely unsafe.
The contact owns a 2001 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that while the brakes being depressed, the engine rmps increased. The brake pedal was released and the vehicle accelerated. The contact was able to place the vehicle in park and there was smoke coming from under the hood. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 68,133 and the current mileage was 68,136.
Exited from the highway to refuel. Upon fueling we intended to continue our trip as planned. Car stopped at light began to accelerate for 5-10 feet. Engine made a revving sound and all power was lost. All fuels look good and this car has less than 20,000 miles total because it was used sparingly by previous owner. No lights or indication gave warning that transmission would lose power. We are now seeing online that this is an issue. I had previously called dealer but kept getting hung up on. I am a widow with children and do not have the money to just tow the car to be fixed as this was our only transportation we have been limited on actually traveling to the dealership so they can check recall information for us.

Transmission intermittently would stay in 5th gear and not shift -- limp home mode. Dealership replaced output shaft sensor and turbine sensor, and this resolved the problem.
The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that the vehicle jerked while driving 35 mph, the vehicle was taken to a mechanic where a diagnostic was performed, which located the failure at the continuous variable transmission. Having driven 150 miles or so of highway driving using cruise control, stopping two times to rest, driving approx. 65 - 70 mph. I arrived at waltham on rt. 128 where the traffic was bumper to bumper. I had to keep my foot on the brake until I was at exit 38 or 39. We travelled 5 - 15 mph. After I was in the slow traffic for approx. 20 minutes my car started to lurch forward while gassing up and wanting to jump ahead. My foot was on the brake and I needed to brake even harder to hold onto the force that the car was exerting. I was in bumper to bumper traffic and had kept a distance betweeh myself and the car in front so the small jump did not hit that car before I pushed harder on the brake. The same thing happened again within 5 minutes. Once I arrived in danvers I drove to the dealer to report the problem and they gave me an appointment for wednesday8/28/13. This same problem has been hapeening since I purchased the car in 2011. It self accelerated randomly every 3-4 months, it happened when I had my foot on the brake and I was at a traffic light with my mom in the car. I almost went throught the light from a stopped braked position. The other times were after driving with cruise control which I need. It also happened while braking to get into a parking place.

Car started accelerating on its own and had to put the car in neutral and put both brakes to make it stop. The car lurches forward when it is stopped at signals. Did some research online and found that this has been an issue that nhs has been investigating and is related to the throttle not closing. . Read more...
While driving recently, my 2005 Sable suddenly accelerated, forcing me to brake and put the car in neutral while at speed. This has happened 3 or 4 other times. In the past. Now the cruise control does not work anymore.
I was driving north on us31 just north of muskegon, michigan. I was going 70 mph when with no warning the car (2003 Mercury Sable) lost drive train power and was suddenly only coasting. I had to pull of onto the shoulder of the highway in heavy traffic. Also I had my three adult autistic children with me, and they all got extremely nervous sitting at the side of the highway as the passing cars were making our vehicle move from the air currents. I was very concerned one of them might try and jump from the car from panic. As for the car itself, I thought maybe the serpentine belt has broke but when I checked it was okay. I restarted the car and put the transmission in gear and nothing. . . No forward or reverse, no movement at all. So I called my father who was fortunately there within half an hour (or with my kids it could have been a really bad situation) and he rescued us and I had a wrecker tow the car home. I called several transmission shops who all told me it is a very common transmission problem with this vehicle as well as the Ford taurus. They pretty much all told me it should be rebuilt as the new parts are better than the original because the new parts are replacing parts Ford knows they have a problem with. Even a mechanic at the Ford dealership told me these vehicles have tranny troubles. My car has 157,000 miles so I guess I should feel lucky after reading internet posts of many of these cars doing to same thing with under 50,000 miles. I think it is a problem that should be recalled before someone gets killed with the tranny just quitting like that if someone hasn't already. Cant imagine being on a road with no shoulder in extreme heavy traffic and I sure don't have the $1200 to $3200 to get it repaired. . Ford should be required to fix this obvious bad transmission.
This mechanical problem has happened two times. The first time was at approximately 120,000 miles. The car is always serviced, well maintained and runs terrific. I was driving for about 30 minutes on the parkway. Suddenly I experienced the car sticking like it was choking, losing power and then surging ahead. I was shocked, continued to drive and it eventually cleared itself. I have never had any other symptoms or incidents like this in the past. I thought it might be a clogged fuel injector so I immediately added some fuel injector cleaner. I brought the car to my mechanic the next morning but he couldn't find anything wrong with the car. The second time it happened was about 3 - 4 weeks later and I called the mechanic again. We only found a small transmission leak but nothing else. I happened to mention the incidents to a mechanic friend of mine at work and he told me it sounded like the throttle. He said he also thought there was a recall on my car. I believe this is a potentially very dangerous issue and need the dealer and the NHTSA to advise if there is a recall! if there isn't then there should be one. Please advise.
Mercury Sable tends to suddenly accelerate and lurge forward even with the foot on the brake.
My daughter had just merged onto the highway going approximately 65mph. Initially it felt difficult to get the car up to speed. She noticed she was edging up on the vehicle in front of her and took her foot off the accelerator to slow down but instead the car sped up. She applied the brakes which did not slow the car down. She applied pressure to the accelerator in an attempt to "unstick" it which had no effect on the speed of the car. She then attempted to apply the brakes further at which time the brakes began smoking. The car had reached 90mph at this point and was shaking. While continuing to keep her foot on the brakes, she was able to pull into the breakdown lane and put the car into neutral but the vehicle only slowed down minimally at which time she put the car into park. The vehicle then stopped but she kept her foot on the brake because the engine continued to rev between 3,000 - 4,000 rpms and she could feel resistance as if the car wanted to continue to move forward despite being in park. At that time she shut off the engine and called for assistance. When my husband and I arrived on scene my husband verified that the accelerator was not stuck on anything, such as a floor mat. Once he saw that the accelerator appeared to be in a normal position he started the vehicle and immediately the engine was reving with rpms again between 3,000 - 4,000. The engine was again shut off and the vehicle was towed to the local Ford dealership.

Car would jerk going interstate speed of 70mph. Felt like it was going into neutral and back in to gear. Did this about four times and I mean it is hard, will scare you to death if your in the car. After it did this about four time over an hour, the traction control and service light came on and stayed on the rest of the trip. This is a used car I just bought, so im not sure if it will continue to do this. But I am afraid to drive it on the interstate now.
