Mercury Sable owners have reported 108 problems related to automatic transmission (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mercury Sable based on all problems reported for the Sable.
Driving down street, stoped to turn, then accelerated when transmission went out, no warning signs just went out, no reverse or forward use. Sent car to repair shop and told no codes show up on computer no signs of leaks or damage to transmission, bad torq converter. Keeping old converter after hearing of similar problems with other vehicles that share same transmission. Called several transmission shops and Ford dealerships and it seems to be a fairly common problem.

I was driving home from work when my car told me to have my transmission checked. I took it to the shop and the mechanic told me that I have to have my transmission rebuilt. The car only has 70,000 miles on it, and I bought it when it had 31,000 miles in 2007. The mechanic proceeded to inform me that the make and model of my car has continuous problems with the transmission, and that he alone had fixed at least 10 or 12 within the past few months.
Automatic transmission - when the vehicle is in drive and stopped on a hill the car will roll back when you remove your foot from the break even when in drive. This is an ongoing issue. You need to use both feet when on a hill, one on the brake and the other on the gas to avoid rolling back into another car. When the local dealer was in business they indicated this was normal. At this time I have no local Mercury dealer to review this situation.

1. Trans fails to downshift, intermittently, when accelerating from appr. 50 mph on and incline, revs to 5500 rpm but car slows down. Almost got hit by truck on freeway yesterday. 2. The car ground to a halt while making a left hand turn and accelerating at about 15-20 mph. Occurred one time, almost rear ended. 3. On slight incline, in drive, car will roll back as if in neutral, almost hit car behind me several times and difficult to park vehicle. There are other trans related issues, but these three are safety concerns. Car has been at dealer several times, for days, they test drove it, had an engineer from Ford drive it, state unable to duplicate any of my concerns. In other words, nothing was done to correct the problems. These problems continue to be easy for me to re produce, along with other problems, shifting late and hard, etc. . I have called the regional service person abe bush, twice in the last 3 1/2 weeks, and received no reply from him.
I purchased a 2002 Mercury Sable in September, 2006. On January 19, 2007 while turning into my driveway going 3-5 miles an hour both frontal airbags deployed causing an estimated $3,000. 00 to $4,000. 00 in damages. The dealer has refused to assist me saying I bought the car "as is". They told me to file the claim with my insurance company. The insurance company said they could do nothing "there was no impact". Ford motor company said there was a 50,000 mile warranty. Your department sent me a service technical bulletin stating that Ford knew of this problem in may, 2002. I have been unable to get anyone (dealer, insurance company, finance company, or manufacturer) to help me with this issue. In February of this year 2009, the fuel pump, driver, computer, and transmission went out in this car. I have spent over $1,600. 00 in repair of this vehicle . Due to the depreciation of the car, the mechanical failures, and the safety issue of no airbags the vehicle is worth nothing. I still owe the finance company $6,000. 00 and have not been able to drive the car for the last 10 months. I was recently directed to research the consumer rights act of 1974, the magnuson-moss warranty act, sale of goods act 1979, alabama lemon laws, buyers remorse law, trade commission act, uniform commercial code, and consumer rights when buying a used car by the bbb. I have been denied my rights. No consumer should have to experience what I have. Every consumer has the right to expect a car they purchase to meet reasonable standards. There was a grave issue of safety for me and my granddaughter when the airbags deployed. Thank god we were not injured. All of these failures have significantly impaired the use, value, and safety of this vehicle! they arose out of the ordinary use of the vehicle and not as a result of abuse. The motor vehicle is out of service and in the custody of the dealer due to repair attempts, one of which occurred during the lemon law rights period.

While driving home at 11pm on September 2, 2006 my car stopped moving as I was making a left-hand turn. The engine was running, the electrical system was in order; the car simply would not move. Luckily, I was able to coast across the road and stop the car in a safe location. As I live in a rural area, the road was empty or I could have been seriously injured. I walked to a nearby bar where I called aaa to come and tow the car. I had the car towed to my home, then after my husband determined it was a serious problem, we had the car towed to the dealership where we purchased it the previous March. The mechanic determined that the transmission was shot and needed to be completely replaced! I was shocked as I had serviced the transmission as recommended at 35,000 and the vehicle only had 52,000 on it.

: the contact stated that the vehicle jerked forward at an alarming rate of speed whenever the accelerator was depressed. The sudden acceleration caused an accident with another vehicle and a police report was filed. The vehicle was inspected by the service dealer who determined that the transmission was the cause of the problem. The transmission was replaced. The contact asked for the old parts and the service dealer refused to supply those parts. The manufacturer was contacted and refused assistance because the vehicle was involved in an accident.
Vehicle slow to up shift. While driving at any speed vehicle suddenly dropped to lowest gear would not go over 23 mph. Loud roaring! after placing in park; putting into drive transmission slams into first gear, but will not change into higher gear.

Contact stated the instrument panel would light up and the radio would go out, and the vehicle would shut off. She put the vehicle in park and was able to restart it. She contacted the mechanic, who replaced the two sensors on the vehicle. The mechanic stated the vehicle thinks it is being stolen. The vehicle is still having the same problem.

2001 Mercury Sable, 31,000 miles. Got into vehicle after work, put into reverse to back out of parking spot, vehicle lunged forward. Transmission found to have failed-locked into forward gear. All gear selector positions are now forward including neutral and reverse. Dealer and Ford motor company notified of situation. Transmission to be replaced. Old transmission may be available after work is complete. I am dissatisfied with Ford's response to this issue, both financially and the lack of concern from the safety issue this could create.

(1) car shifts hard during acceleration and deceleration. Speedometer does not work or bounces up, then down. Check engine light comes on. (2) while driving at normal road speeds the transmission will switch to low gear causing sudden throw of driver inside car and at times when trying to accelerate there is a long delay in power to engine then sudden acceleration. (3) replaced cam sensor and other sensor three times and always fails again.
Mercury Sable 2000. The contact states that she has not been able to get the vehicle out of park. This has happened three times. The service technician at the repair shop told her that it was because she was pulling a trailer with her vehicle. But she stated that the first time it happened she was not pulling the trailer, it did not even have the trailer hitch on it. The first time it was around June, 2003. The second time it was June 1st,2005. The third time was June 15, 2005.

While the consumer was parking the vehicle, it inadvertently went into reverse and subsequently the consumer vrashed into the garage.
Vehicle had been to the dealer on several occasions. Mechanic could not duplicate the problem. Vehicle jumped forward. Transmission popped into gear on its own. The rpms accelerated, then vehicle would stalled. Consumer was unable to restart vehicle. It was towed to the dealer, and mechanic informed consumer that vehicle was placed on diagnostic machine, and computer was reprogrammed. Consumer informed the mechanic that this problem occurred again, and had not been resolved.

While driving 40 mph transmission intermittently slipped gears. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Car surges. Transaxle light comes on and continually blinks until the ignition is turned off. Been to the dealer 3 times where error po734 was retrieved each time. Dealer replaced some transmission parts. Dealer unable to duplicate the problem. The problem is intermittent and still exists. Called Ford motor company (Mercury) customer service. No help. Requested a dispute application form.
When the gear shifter lever was put into drive from reverse vehicle failed to accelerate when the gas pedal was depressed. This occurred while the consumer was reversing. Vehicle was towed to the dealership, and mechanic determined that the problem was due to a failure in the catalytic convertor because of the weak transmission being used. Also, indicated that this was a common problem with these vehicles.
It was hard for the consumer to shift the vehicle out of park to the drive position. Consumer had to start the vehicle in neutral in order for the vehicle to start. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Intermittently while driving at any speed there was a clicking sound coming from the steering column. When this occurred the power steering/power windows and abs failed to work properly. (automatic position lever module) the radio had gone on and off as well.
Transmission replacement at 67,500 miles.
The driver pressed down on the accelerated pedal and the vehicle did not move. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for analysis. The dealer found internal failure of the transmission. The transmission had to be replaced.
Transmission problem in traffic. Car doesn't shift properly when accelerating from lower speeds and gives passengers a jolt.
While waiting at a stop vehicle shook/vibrated. Consumer was able to pull over to the shoulder, and vehicle shut down.
I have a 2002 Mercury Sable w/ 40,000 miles on it. The car had to be taken back numerous times the hub caps fell off after the 6th time they replaced with alloy wheels. The right & left sway bar end links have been replaced. The altenator went out and was replaced. The transmission had to completely be overhauled. The powertrain control module replaed, the spark plug wire replaced, replaced processor and key. #4 plug wire shorting out caused coil to go bad and fouled #3 ac coil asy-ign replaced after fixing $3 & #4 showed up on power balance retest, but said road test was ok at this time suggested fel management. It scares me that so much can go wrong on a 2002 auto. I did have extended warranty on the altenator and transmission, but I would have hated to pay the $3028. 00 charge to fix the problem, I wasn't real happy to pay the deductible. The extended warranty got stuck paying even though I had the car in under orignal warranty for the same problem.
Problem started when shifting from park to drive, car would lurch forward unless you had brake pedal pushed down as hard as you could. Then while leaving a stop light car would hesitate then pick up speed very slowly, finally the car will not go into reverse. Transmission shop said that transmission had to be replaced. $1800. 00 !!.
On 06/26/03 2000 Sable parked in friends driveway in park running with a/c on and driver left vehicle. Driver went to front door and then heard a boom. Car went up a slight grade and continued for 15 feet and struck friends new motor home. Owner of motor home opened car door to move vehicle and found car still in park. Owner selected reverse and backed car away from motor home. Metlife auto & home notified. On 06/27/03 this Sable was driven and parked in a parking lot and turned off. When driver and 2 passengers returned to car and started car and shifted into reverse, car proceeded forward. Car was shifted back to park, driver sat there for a couple of minutes and shifted again back into reverse and car again went forward. Car was turned off and driver restarted car a few minutes later and shifted into reverse and car went backwards. Car was taken to morris Ford in burnt hills, NY. The Ford dealership contacted Ford's factory hotline and they said they have no reports pertaining to such. Factory hotline said they would pass info up to engineering. Their advise was for the driver to use the parking brake. That's real comforting!!! the technician checked the shifter cable and found okay! the car is still at the Ford dealership and the factory has not responded back (07/05/03). The car has also had the brake lights stay on after pedal is released. The brake lights have come on with no one in the car. The car shifter has locked in park and would not release to another position. The car has accelerated while driving with no increase of pressure on gas pedal. Ford motors needs to take responsibility for a problem that they say does not exist when it does exist as evident by the number of reports for both the 2000 Sable and the 2000 taurus. When I purchased this 2000 Sable used, Ford credit offered me an extended warranty of 6 years or 75,000 miles which I accepted. I am beginning to wonder if they don't want to honor the warranty.
While driving at 5 mph consumer heard a noise coming from under the vehicle. Consumer put vehicle in reverse and the vehicle would not accelerate. Consumer made contact with the dealer.

The vehicle was parked and with no warning rolled forward. The dealer was notified. The vehicle was stopped and the gear shift was in park. The consumer exited the vehicle, and when he returned to the vehicle, it started to roll down the slope of the roadway. The consumer ran after the vehicle and was able to get it under control.
Problems with transmission caused vehicle to stop. While driving 60 mph, the vehicle stopped, and failed to accelerated when the pedal was pushed.
While driving there was a loud noise coming from underneath the vehicle.
While driving about 65 mph the vehicle stalled. The consumer restarted the vehicle but it would not shift.
When the gear was switched from park to reverse, the vehicle lurched forward and almost caused an accident. . .
