My 2000 Mercury Sable transmission has failed. It gave no warning or slippage or anything. The car was moving fine when the transmission stopped pulling. It will go in park and neutral but won't pull. The fluid doesn't leak out and is still full. After reading forums on the internet, it appears that a lot of people have the same problem. I believe Ford needs to have a recall for this problem on Mercury Sables and Ford taurus. Please help us with this matter. I don't want to spend $2000 for a rebuild when Ford is responsible.

The contact owns a 1997 Mercury Sable. The contact noticed transmission fluid leaking onto the catalytic converter. The was informed by a Ford representative that his VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 97v097000 (power train:automatic transmission), although the failures were identical. The contact still has the vehicle, but is afraid to drive. The failure and current mileages were 37,840. Updated 12/30/08. The consumer also discovered oil leaking in the transaxle area. The contact owns a 1997 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that transmission fluid was leaking and draining onto the catalytic converter. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for a diagnosis. The manufacturer stated that his vehicle does not have any open recalls and they were unaware of NHTSA campaign id number 97v097000 (power train:automatic transmission). The failure mileage was 105,000 and current mileage was 137,000.
Hesitation in transmission. Excessive leak in trans fluid, made a large puddle. Had a wobble as vehicle accelerated. Had front trans seal and axle seals replace, as well as one axle.

Intermittant erratic transmission shift concerns, especially in the first tow gears, performed sbds diagnosis and rempved plugged valve body to no avail. Transmission fluid looked like coffee grounds in it, also oil leak in the area of the intake manifold that needed to be checked.
The consumer noticed the vehicle was leaking transmission fluid.
