On the morning of 12/19/02, I entered my vehicle and started it up. After closing the door I observed in the outside rearview mirror that it appeared my garage door was not fullu opened. I then opened the driver side door and exited it without closing it. With my back to the vehicle I verified that the garage door was fully opened. Before I could turn around the vehicle had proceeded to back out of the garage with the car door opened. I was not able to re-enter the vehicle with the hopes of stopping it as the door made contact with some plastic containers. The containers did create a void for me as once the containers gave way under the force of the door I was then thrown clear of the opened car door and the garage door door jam. After I was able to pick myself up from the floor I was able to run and stop the car when it was approximately 30 feet down the driveway.

I have a Mercury Sable 1996, manufactured in 9/95. VIN number 1melm53s3ta608443. My car has 58,000 miles and the transmission is almost gone. I was informed that there is a recall on the transmissions for this car and I am looking for the necessary information to take with me to dealer for replacement. I have also noticed that my car jerks forward when am taking off from a stopped position. I have done all that I can to take care of this car but nothing I do has worked. There are so many complaints and recalls on this car and I really need help with my research to present to the dealer when I take this car in for repairs again. A website if there is one to help find my VIN #. Any recall information. Help!.

About a year back I had transmission problem on my Sable at 70,000 miles. It would move in reverse but no forward motion. The vehicle was towed and the transmission was rebuilt at cottman transmission at the cost of over $2000 and loss of vehicle use for a week. A month later, it failed with exactly similar symptoms. It was towed to the same facility and repaired under warranty in four days. Six months later, and exactly a month after the warranty on repair work expired (74,000 miles), the transmission started to visibly down shift while driving (at all speeds). Took it back to repair facility - was told it's internal transmission problems - once again! I just can't believe this. I can't afford to waste 4,000 on transmission jobs on this car when it's not even worth that much. I scanned through the other complaints and found some other instances when this transmission had given problems to owners. Just wondering how many dissatisfied owners would it take for Ford to realize that there is a "real" problem with their Sable/Mercury transmissions! I had two Ford taurus's in the past, and this is third from Ford family. I am going to stop spending money on Ford cars if this is the level of quality that I get for my money.
Hard upshift and downshift while coming to a stop or pulling away. Once vehicle was stopped it would have a tendency at times to lurch forward while brake was on. . Upon taking the transmission down, the dealer found clutch material in transmission the ss3 was sticking, the accumulator o-ring was cut the forward drum ck. Vall sticint overdrive band burned and needed to exchange the entire transmission. Thankfully the trany was under warranty. However, now the repaired assy is only covered for 12000 miles or 12 months whichever comes first and we are naturally concerned that this might be a defect as the Ford taures seemed to have trany problems in the 1197 to 1999 range which is why we did not buy one but went with the Sable after checking NHTSA reports the vehicle itself.
I purchased a 1997 Mercury Sable in July 1977 from don jackson spartan Lincoln Mercury dealer. I have had continuous trouble with the transmission, the brakes, the "plastic" bucket holding reserve antifreeze (cracked and leaked antifreeze) and now the windshield wipers work when they want to work (intermittently and steadily). When I contacted don jackson Lincoln-Mercury at those times when the parts acted up to ask them if there had been any recalls or problems (and I cited each area each time I called), I was told there were no problems reported in any of these areas with the 97 Sable. I found there on the internet that there are many. I have paid $2000 for the transmission repair, $550 for brakes, $80 for the antifreeze bucket, and went to purchase a wiper motor ($85) when I was told by the auto store clerk to check the internet, which I am now doing. I find that jackson spartan l/m dealer has not been honest with me and I was not notified by don jackson spartan l/m of these fallacies. What can I do?.
Transmission had to be replaced twic within 8 month period.
I have been told that all problems with my Sable from transmission to air conditioner is only typical for Sables. Transmission doesn't shift correctly, brakes pulsate, climate control can'tbe used because of smell inside car. Problem with transmission the dealership told me it was only the way I drive, they say nothing is wrong with car. Am now attemptong to have Ford buy back vehicle.
Transmission has not worked properly since consumer purchased automobile. He had taken automobile back to the dealer for transmission repairs five times. Transmission shifts improperly and bangs in to gear in certain down shift circumstance. The transmission dealer replaced a switch and adjusted two bands.
Car has been in shop 9 times for transmission leaks and recalls since I bought the car. In December the transmission was replaced. Today 4/21/00, while crossing a major highway car stopped! I had myself and two passengers in the car. We could easily have been killed if the cars traveling in either direction had been going any faster then they were. The whole incident was terrifying. I want to bring this to your attention before some is killed.
I purchased a 2001 Mercury Sable, I took the auto and on the second day I put the auto in drive, the motor raced like the pedal was pushed to the floor,I called the dealer and told them I will not drive this auto they sent atow truck andthe next day they gave me a new Sable. Since I have this new Sable the gas pedal gives me the same reaction as the old one. It occurred about 9 or 10 times over the last 9 years. Very rare but it does occur. My wife refuses to drive it. Because of what happens to the accelerator. Every time I start the car I make sure my foot is on the brake pedal when I put the car in drive. I feel its the computer that occasionally goes beserk. I bring this up because I see where Toyota is having problems with there computers also. It's very frightening when the car accelerates like something is controlling the gas pedal at this high rate of speed. When this does occur I put the car in neutral and the engine goes back to normal.
Coolant turned to a rusty sluggy mixture. Freeze out plugs had to be replaced and system flushed. New coolant was added and it is already turning brown again. Ford did do the work for free, but told me I was on my own if it occured again. Have learned through various people that the same thing is happening to their Sable and taurus cars. Transmission has also had to repaired at a cost to me of $1750. 00. When you come to a stop the car will then not go forward. You have to press in on the gas and make it lunge forward, sometimes causing the tires to "burn rubber" ! we brought this problem to the service department three years ago and each time we took the car in the service staff informed us that there was no problem. On last visit is when the coolant problem was discoverd. Was told that our car had "cancer" and should get rid of it, but not at their dealership. The problem with the transmission was a forward engagement piston. The company that made the repair had three other Sables in the shop with the exact same problem - each with no support from Ford. Each were paying $1750. 00. Help!!!.
While driving 70 mph and all of a sudden vehicle slowed to 30 mph, transmission had gone out. Dealer found metal shavings.
Consumer states she attempted to put vehicle in reverse, the engine felt as if it was going to fall out, consumer contacted dealership and vehicle was taken in for a transmission overhaul and repairs on three occassions.
Almost caused a major accident but avoided fatalties.
A $2 retaining clip affecting the 4th gear in the automatic tran is broken or has come off, according to the dealers computer code reading and service bulletin, and it is going to cost up to $900 to fix if it damaged the housing inside.
Cracked tranmission case, pin came out of gear.
Transmission blew apart. Crack in case may have occurred first, causing internal problems (still had fluid) or transmission blowing apart may have caused crack in case (per repairman).
When shifting into reverse to back up vehicle will go forward. This incident had happened more than one occasion. Vehicle hit another vehicle. The dealer states that the cause is tranmission malfunction and should be replaced. The owner of the vehicle did not agree.
When traveling and stopping transmission will go into neutral, and car will not go forward or backward. Consumer has to put transmission into park, and then bring it back into drive.
Vehicle experiencing a problem with not shifting into gear intermittently / momentarily while traveling. This problem had occurred on four occasions within 2 1/2 years. Vehicle been into dealer's shop on two occasions, and unable to locate the problem. .
Transmission required to be rebuilt.
Thats it the transmission went out at 45,000, the wheel bearing went out soon after purchased, the interior electrical went out soon after purchase also the power seat quit working.
The battery was inexplicably drained 6 weeks after we purchased the car. Two days ago, the car slipped into neutral without warning whenever I turned or slowed down. Now, it slips into neutral all of the time.
When automobile is placed in park, it does not automatically go into park. Also, when the automobile is on a hill, it will move until emergency brake is on. In addition, it is hard to shift out of park. Recall 96v176ooo has been issued which deals with the same problem. However, this vehicle is not covered under the recall due to VIN.
While driving transmission completely malfunctioned, cause unknown. Also tachometer needle registering too high, smoke coming from under the hood, and oil smell.
Automatic transmission burnt up after 2 mile trip.
