2002 Mercury Sable LS. Consumer states problems with fuel injector and damaged valve
the consumer stated when the check engine light illuminated, the vehicle developed an engine miss. The problem was diagnosed as a faulty #5 fuel injector. Codes po305 and po316. The cost of the repair was $800 plus dollars. When the consumer retrieved the vehicle, he was informed there was some carbon deposits present and the vehicle might run a little rough until the carbon burned off. One week later, the check engine light illuminated again. It was the same two codes from a previous repair. The dealer informed the consumer of a damaged valve and the cost would be anywhere from $1600-$2000. The consumer filed a complaint with the attorney generals office and was refunded his money from the previous repair.

My car (2002 Mercury Sable) continues to fail smog inspection due to faulty oxygen sensors. I have taken it to the dealer and it costs at least $200 each time I take it in and they never completely fix it stating it is an ongoing problem with this car. The check engine light is always on.
Driving our 2001 Sable one day the check engine light came on when we were stopped at a red light. As the light turned green I accelerated and the car did not move according to the pressure I was putting on the gas pedal. The light stopped flashing and the car ran fine. This would happen from time to time and it got to a point were I took the unit to a Mercury dealership to have it checked out and they stated it had a mis-fire on the number 4 cylinder and they would have to replace the cylinder head at a cost of 2k one head only. I did some asking around at Ford and found out that there were some valve issues with the 3. 0l dohc 24 v . I looked into the dealer process of changing only one head and I was told that would not be the Smart thing to do. I finally took the car in to confirm what the dealer had said and to get it fixed. I took the car to t. C. Auto service in ann arbor and he confirmed I had a leak down problem on number 4 cylinder exhaust valve. The engine had to be removed from the car and I had both heads reworked new valve guide and seats along with replacing the valves on number 4 cylinder. I have the damaged valves returned to me.
At about 100,000 easy highway miles, we had to replace the torque converter, then the entire transmission, plus for the last two years minor engine repairs to the tune of about $350 every other month, the window won't go down anymore, and now--4 months after the transmission replacement--we have lost overdrive and the engine light is on, again! we have never had a car with this many problems, and will never buy a Ford/Mercury anything again. Our suburban was more reliable.

While driving on highway at approx. 65-70 mph noticed engine check light and battery light coming on. Pulled over, turned off vehicle, and looked under hood. Noticed engine coolant overflowing onto ground. Tried to start vehicle, but engine would not start. Vehicle was inspected by dealer ,and informed consumer that engine had sucked up the water from the air filter which caused the engine head to crack. Can NHTSA help in this matter, and provide additional information.
