On April 12 I exited my drive onto the 55 mph highway in front of my house when suddenly the car began to shudder. I jammed the gas to get up to speed to prevent oncoming cars from hitting me which made the problem much worse. It was violently shuddering and wouldn’t accelerate. I took my foot off the gas which stopped the shaking. I gassed it slowly and I could accelerate to speed much slower than I would have liked. It wasn’t smooth. One half mile later it suddenly and violently began again. Taking my foot off the gas it smoothed out and I could accelerate again. I changed plans and went to the service garage to see what the problem was. It seems the problem is a known issue that hasn’t been addressed. I’m glad there were no cars coming from the opposite direction which could have impacted the drivers side while I was floundering out of my drive. I will enclose the garages assessment.

While parked, tried to put car in reverse to back out of driveway but car will not shift out of park. Only way to get car to shift out of park is to apply emergency brakes then shift car into neutral while key turned to off position. Break lights will not illuminate when brake pedal applied. I checked all the fuses and replaced the break lamp bulbs to troubleshoot issue according to owners manual however problem still exists. When researching online I read about the same exact issues occurring in same model and make that were recalled. I went to my nearest Ford dealership to inform them about this issue and get some assistance in fixing the problem. However they would not help in the matter, and stated that my particular VIN # and year model 2004 had no recalls. The recall was issued for faulty break light switches in 2003 and previous year models of Mercury Sables. I've read about numerous issues occurring with other 2004 Mercury Sable owners that also cannot get help with this matter. This is obviously a safety issue and it is my hope that the NHTSA investigates to find out why 2004 models are also exhibiting same recall safety issues. The problem obviously lies with the part (same break light switch) Ford installed on these vehicles and not necessarily the year the vehicle was made. It has always been my understanding that the primary mission and role of the NHTSA is to help keep the public safe and informed about potential safety issues. Therefore, I hope they not only investigate why Ford used the same faulty part on other year model vehicles but also issue the necessary recall for said vehicles with those parts. If, while traveling with my family, a car slams into us because no break lights will engage, whose fault is that? I've brought this safery issue concern to the attention of Ford and now the NHTSA. Failure to address this issue puts the public in danger!.

Car will not come out of park, nor will brake lights operate when pedal depressed. Exact symptoms as described in previous model year recalls. Only wayto get car out of park is to place in neutral after turning key in ignition to first avaialble position, then applying brake pedal to release shift lock.
We were stopped behind traffic, and as we slowly started to proceed, the car surged at a high rate of speed, and as the brakes were applied, they either were not working or else it was the abs coming on. This was a dry, sunny day-no moisture on the road-of course that would not have had a bearing on why the car surged/accelerated. Then the car shut itself off completely. We then got it started again, and nothing happened getting it back the aproxx. 4 miles back to home-all was normal after the incident all the way to home, though it has not been driven since. It has been reported to Ford hq's and to the dealership we purchased from.
The check engine light keeps coming on. Each time I have the part repaired or replace only to have it come again with a new code. I have replaced numerous parts and have spent over $2000 so far. The check engine light still keeps coming on. The car runs good. Sometimes the transmission acts up but everything seems to be working fine. I just cant stop the check engine lite to stay off.

Driving down interstate 90 in south dakota when the electrical just shut off at night. We had no power, lights or steering control going 75 mph. This has happened several times a year since we got the vehicle in 2009. At that speed and with no one able to see us due to no lighting we become a hazard to ourselves and others. I would like to know if this is an endemic problem with this model and why no one can seem to find the issue. We have taken it to 3 repair places including a Ford dealership and no one can find anything wrong. We would like Ford to make it right.

This was the third incident in which the car stopped on me. (one other time when I was leaving my apartment and one Wednesday evening on my way to bible study; both times had to coast to the road side and try and get it to start again). The third time I was driving down the highway at the speed limit of 40 mph. The car's dash board lite up; gave me one message that said "low pressure. The steering wheel locked and the gas pedal locked; I was able to coast to the side before it completed locked up and stopped one me. Had my year old grandson in the car with me. I let the car sit for a while and was able to get it started again. Drove it back to my apartment and parked it. Have not driven it since then - had it towed to a repair shop where it is right now - they want t0o much to have it repaired; they say there is a problem with the cylinder inside the ignition and that I also need a new key - want $1200 to repair it. I have been having problems trying to get it to started for about the past 6 months - have taken it to several repair shops; paid them but no one has solved the issue. Ford states that my car is not included in the recall (or though one lady there said it was). I believe that if it isn't, it should me. Is there anything else I can do to get this issue solved? has costed me lots of money, time and frustration and I am still walking.
Car will not come out of park, nor will brake lights operate when pedal depressed. Exact symptoms as described in previous model year recalls. Only wayto get car out of park is to place in neutral after turning key in ignition to first avaialble position, then applying brake pedal to release shift lock. This is a recurring problem w/ a failed brake light switch assembly. It's too dangerous of a problem to not have a recall. Many other model vehicles have been recalled for the same exact problem. Why not this model?.
The contact owns a 2001 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that the alarm system and interior lights would activate independently and recurringly. The vehicle was not taken for diagnosis or inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the incident. The approximate failure mileage was 189,000.

2005 Mercury Sable with only about 60,000 miles car accelerates by itself nearly causing an accident. The acceleration is so strong that it overpowers the brakes and happens while driving at any speed. The only way to stop the car is to shift to neutral and hope for the best. Ford dealership said it was a faulty speed control line which they want nearly $500 to replace.
The contact owns a 2002 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that the dome light would activate independently and only turn off only when the brakes were depressed. As the problem persisted, the door lights and the door locks started to malfunction. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign id number: 04v106000 (exterior lighting) but was advised by the manufacturer that the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 167,000. The current vehicle was mileage was 180,000.
Brake light switch at pedal faulty with same symptoms as recall NHTSA I. D. # 04v10600. . . Brake lights won't activate when pedal depressed while driving or parked and when parked transmission range selector is stuck in park position. These symptoms could cause an accident from the rear and or leave family members stranded. Curiously this recall doesn't list the recalled switches part number and certainly Ford motors won't admit that a few were installed on 2004 models.
There was a recall on my car back in Mar 02 2004 (Ford recall number 04s12) for an exterior lighting:brake lights:switch, which was (according to Ford) done Jan 10 2005. I had failed again on 11/15/2012 leaving me without brake lights and not being able to get it out of park. Had to put it in neutral first before I started my car so I could drive it to get fixed.
While driving recently, my 2005 Sable suddenly accelerated, forcing me to brake and put the car in neutral while at speed. This has happened 3 or 4 other times. In the past. Now the cruise control does not work anymore.
Heater/ac fan continuously stops working. I first replaced the motor resistor in August 2012. It worked for 2 weeks when it broke for the 2nd time. I went to fix it again, only to find out it stops working again after 2 more weeks. It is now October and the motor resistor broke 2x and now the motor blower is completely gone. No ac/heater. The temperature in NY in October is not compliant with no heater. This is ridiculous. Broke 3xs in a span of 6 weeks or so.
Whenever I turn on the air conditioner or heater my car accelerates suddenly in a randomly manner for no reason by itself, when heater or air conditioner is turned off the problem stops, there's no check engine light on and an inspection yielded no problems, I am not sure if the problem is electrical or anything else and a local Ford dealer has refused to fix the issue.
Outside lights will not go off need new stop lamp and air filter both parts were recalled in 2004 and should be replaced with new for free norma barsaloux 4859 n central chicago IL 60630 773-427-5055.
The engine suddenly quit running while cruising at 60 mph in darkness on a heavily traveled congested 6 lane interstate highway. The time was 6:50 pm and there was no unusual weather. The car shook for a few seconds at the time of shut-down. I attributed the shake of the car to a loaded semi flat bed truck running in the next lane at approximately 65 mph. We were at normal spacing between vehicles. There was neither contact with this truck nor any other vehicle. The incident occurred on i270 near bridgeton, mo. We merged onto mo 340 and continued coasting until we found a safe place to pull over to call for help. I tried to restart the engine several times while coasting, to no avail. While waiting for help to arrive, I tried to understand what may have caused the engine to quit running. The fuel tank registered one-half full. I recalled reading in the owner's manual years ago about a fuel shut-off reset. I raised the trunk lid, readily found the reset. The red button was up--I pushed it down. I was able to immediately restart the engine. The engine was let run for at least 10 minutes without finding any problem. We continued on to our destination about 8 miles away. The car has been driven on 4 days since then for a total of about 250 miles, with no apparent problem. I write this because I find it extremelly dangerous to have an engine shut down on a very congested interstate highway, after dark, with most traffic running 65 - 70 mph. During this incident, I feared being rear-ended as there was limited opportunity to get off the road.
This car only works whenever ir feels like it and took it to every shop n cant find the problem. . Been stranded so many tumes and the dealer aint gonna do nothing about it knowing that im still paying for it or trade me a car need help here.
The drivers side heated seat died shortly after I purchased this vehicle. This was one of the selling points for me, I had it replaced and the replacement didn't make it through the winter of that year. I didn't realize this was a problem common with the Sable. I cannot affort to have it replaced again. Is this a fire hazard. I am also having a terrible peeling and chipping problem with the paint.
The contact owned a 2000 Mercury Sable. The contact was driving 30 mph when smoke began emitting from the engine. The contact immediately pulled over and got out of the vehicle as it burst into flames. The fire department was called yet the vehicle was destroyed when the y arrived. The police and fire department were unable to determine the cause of the fire. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle had no recalls. The contact noticed various online complaints regarding fires in his year, make and model and believed that the manufacturer should look into all of the complaints. The failure mileage was 118,000.
My 2008 Mercury Sable, when at highway speed, speedometer has moved higher and lower on its own. When in cruise control car suddenly accelerated when speedometer dropped to erroneous low speed. This could have caused a crash into car ahead of me if I were not alert. It could have caused a speeding ticket.
Had tuneup. [plugs and wires] computer upgrade. Car now surges and idle jumps to 2000 rpm. Hit a car in front of me at stop light, and almost a person in walk, when surged. Am shifting to neutral at stops, but, it snaps your neck when you shift back to drive. Have had to 2 dif Ford & mec. Dealers several times and only get nothing!! help please.
I own a 2003 Mercury Sable, and approximately back in 2010 I experienced my first failure of the blower resistor motor. Then one month later I experienced another failure, being under warranty they replaced it, another month goes by and yet another failure, take it back and we tried to figure why it was failing. We then come up my car was mainly garaged, and I rarely drive in the rain. On the three different dates of failure we were experiencing heavy rain that I had driven in and upon the next day or two going out it failed. They then put silicone around and near everything. Now it is may of 2012 and I experience another failure, doing some of my own investigating I am shocked to know that this is a known issue for 2001 - 2004 Ford taurus and Mercury Sable cars. And there is a TSB 04-15-3 on how to resolve this issue. To me this is a very potential fire hazard since when the water comes into contact with live electricity to cause the blow out can indeed cause a shock or even damage the blower motor. And if a person foot happens to be in the area when the short happens they could get an unexpected jolt and get hurt. This should be a mandatory recall event for this problem before someone gets seriously injured.
The contact owns a 2002 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that all four doors on his vehicle remained unlocked whenever he was driving. Immediately after his vehicle was started the warning lights came on and the doors unlocked. The contact had to lock manually lock the doors. The Ford manufacturer stated that they would not repair the vehicle; however, they offered the contact no explanation. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 94,000. Updated 3/10/10 updated 05/10/jb.
Automatic headlights relay soddard into backside of fuse panel (gem) was bad location for a person with no experience to fix or locate most people never got it fixed because of no experience and amount of money to have an electrical mechanic to fix. I understand there was a few people did get it fixed through a recall but I didn't and I never got a recall for this in the mail. I would like Ford motor company fix this because I was never notified of this problem. My car has had this problem for about 12 years.
The contact owns a 1996 Mercury Sable wagon. The contact stated the vehicle had been parked on sept 10,09 at 3:30, the next day, at 6:30 pm the vehicle caught fire. The manufacturer was not notified. The insurance has not advised the contact if the vehicle was destroyed or not. An insurance adjuster will provide the findings as soon as possible.
